The all-new "US Politics and coronavirus" thread

I don't think anything that kills 120,000 people in 6 months could ever be a joke. I also don't think an economic disaster is a joke either. Still, this really is nothing if you compare it to WW2. FDR rallied the country to get it done. People sacrificed and mostly pulled together. In contrast, Trump is trying to tear the country apart.
"Japanese in Gina is a Democrat hoax!"
"It's just one fighter coming in from Japan!"
"On December 6th, a date which will live in infamy, I was suddenly and deliberately attacked by very nasty Fake News reporters asking me very mean questions."
"Gina lied and didn't say anything about Japanese troops in Gina, total cover-up, I could have done more than anyone if someone had warned me."
"The Japs on Wake will go away like a miracle!"
"Rationing? Shifting factories towards a war economy? Self-censoring in public to not give away "war secrets"? COMMUNISM!!!!"
"I take no responsibility."

They showed a documentary here in the UK. It compared the response in South Korea to the UK over the virus. Our populations are pretty close to each other (51 million SK to 63 Million UK). We are at 37,000 deaths in the UK due to Covid. In South Korea they have had 239. Someone somewhere is getting it more right than the USA or the UK but neither pig ignorant administration seem capable of learning from those who are doing a better job.

20% is not pretty close. Next time someone talks about the gender wage gap at 79 cents, I will tell them parsman thinks that is pretty close.

NPR: Wisconsin Supreme Court Overturns The State's Stay-At-Home Orders
By a vote of 4 to 3, conservative justices blocked the Governor's stay at home orders. The conservative members of the legislature challenged the Governor's orders.

Video now showing of several 20-somethings whooping it up at a Wisconsin bar. I'm not sure I'd risk my life for a beer and some chicken wings. I do hope they will track those customers end employees (not one of which was wearing a mask) and see what they're doing a month from now. I think it would be great if none of them got sick. I think it is unlikely that no one will.

To be fair, the East Asian countries like South Korea and Singapore have also had previous bouts with SARS to learn from.

FBI serves warrant on Sen. Burr and seizes cell phone in stock investigation. Per ⁦@latimes⁩

This means that a federal judge concluded that there is good reason to believe that Senator Burr engaged in insider trading and that evidence of his insider trading is contained on his cell phone.

For example, his phone could contain text messages or IMs with others discussing his stock trades.

To obtain this warrant, prosecutors would need to show that Burr used the phone to discuss his trading activity.

Or more broadly, they could show that Burr used the phone to engage in discussion that indicated that he was aware of non-public information, that he encouraged others to trade on that non-public information, or that he tried to hide information regarding his trading activity.

Burr was one of the senators who appeared to sell off stock before the coronavirus-caused stock market crash, after being briefed on it but before information was made public.

We're probably going to get to 120,000 deaths in less time than six months. Below is a chart from Worldometer. It shows the U.S had just over 80,000 deaths since March 31st. That's forty-four days. At the current rate we'll pass 100,000 next week sometime.

Yes, and 120,000 will be early next month.

To be fair, anybody who knew about that could have learned the same lesson. It is actually possible to learn from somebody else's experience, you know. That is what science does all the time!

Tracing their cellphones would be one way of doing it: Who will be quarantined or hospitalized in two weeks?

Overall, more Americans trust the information they receive from Fauci (67%) than from Trump (36%), according to a CNN Poll conducted by SSRS released this week. But they are divided along partisan lines. Republicans are more apt to say that they trust the information they get about coronavirus from Trump (84%) than they are to say they trust the information they get from Fauci (61%) or the CDC (72%). Among Democrats, just 4% say they trust the information they get from the President, well behind the 81% who say they trust Fauci or the 80% who trust the CDC.
Trump privately questions whether coronavirus deaths are being overcounted as Fauci projects the opposite (CNN, May 13, 2020)

Could somebody please explain to me how it's possible to trust both Trump and Fauci?
My hypothesis is that it's much like the cognitive dissonance of religion:

Wishful thinking makes you believe in God, but at the same time you do know that he isn't real, that prayer doesn't really help, and that the universe obeys laws very different from those described in the Bible - so you choose to do so, too.
In the case of Trump, you would like to trust him because, after all, you voted for him, he caters to some of your favourite delusions, and you would hate to admit that you were and are wrong. But on the other hand, you also know that ingesting lysol or bleach isn't actually good for you - so you don't.

I guess Fauci acts much like a high-school teacher of biology in Kansas: You tell your students what's what but refrain from emphasizing the (otherwise obvious) contradiction between your teachings and those of the local preacher's.

It's far from 'teaching the controversy' but it's also far from confronting the lies.

Well, I suppose people could enjoy national parks like that woman who fell into the thermal pool at Yellowstone. The lava would sterilize the germs on the corpses, rendering the experience quite safe for everyone!

Actually the Sulfuric acid in the pools would definitely desolve the virus along with skin and Flesh most of the burns in those pools are acid burns.

You are on this site and you ask how you could trust a conspiracy theorist who Appeared on Alex Jones's Infowars and is good Friends with Sean Hannity at 🦊 Fraud News?

Were these lessons declared state secrets and suppressed from human eyes or are there probably mountains of content available about it?

That's super, Bob, really really super. Now when you bring that up, you also be sure to tell them how your pretentious nitpicking "skepticism" didn't even come pretty close to getting the point Parsman was actually making. You'll do that, right?

Wisconsin looks like the kind of state Dr. Anthony Fauci just warned Congress about. If a state opens too early, in addition to a lot of "needless suffering and death" -- which I presume most Republican politicians could care less about so long as they're helping to get the economy going -- Fauci warned a renewed outbreak could actually derail the economy all over again.

trump didn't like what Fauci told the Senate Tuesday -- trump called it 'unacceptable' -- but here's an example of exactly what Fauci was talking about and it involves South Korea! From NPR:
South Korea is now grappling with some of its largest infection clusters yet after authorities began to loosen some social distancing restrictions this month. Scores of new cases have been reported in the past two weeks, many of which are linked to a young man who stopped in at several clubs and bars in Seoul the night of May 1. Officials do not know how he contracted the virus in the first place. It's a demoralizing development for officials there, who postponed their plans to reopen on-site classes in schools for the first time in more than two months. Link

It's crazy. South Korea's surge in new cases may be traced back to just one person.

Why? Why should parsman be free to say ridiculous things without challenge if they are not critical to parsman's main point?
Also, why comment on Parsman's point that I agree with?
