In spite of all the Republicans' professed concern for the sanctity of the voting process the highest ranking Republican in the country committed not one, but two illegal acts when voting ... for himself ... and they are not at all disturbed by this.

You say that like it is supposed to mean something.

I can’t give you the exact date they did it, but I can tell you it has been well over 20 years ago that the Republican Party decided to never, ever be embarrassed by double standards. And shortly after that they realized that there was a certain power of accusing Democrats of double standards.

Well, that is irrelevant. A process exists to do either an amendment to the constitution or a change in the statute law. That those are different processes really matters not a whit.

It is not possible for President Trump and Vice-president Pence to be sick enough for the Senate to agree to letting Speaker Pelosi take the reins.


Even if both members of team chucklehead were in comas, neither Speaker Pelosi nor the public would be informed. After all, they have already set precedent that people other than POTUS can send out tweets on the RealDonaldTrump account. So, The electronic vitriol, bragging, and name calling would continue and it would be business as usual. Senator McConnell would continue to prevent bills from reaching the White House.



Furthermore , any nominations could be made by the folks who steer the president to specific people (if those folks were ever caught nominating judges while the president was in a coma they would simply say, “POTUS wrote a very detailed note explaining who he wanted nominated and we were just following his instructions. No. Of course we are not going to show you the note. Now, go away, loser”).

What mechanism would the Senate use to change the order of succession?

I am not aware of their agreement being a part of that process.

There are procedures for continuity of government. If both President and Vice-president are clearly incapacitated (induced coma with tubes down their throats), there will be a knock on the door of whatever place Pelosi happens to be. Nearly simultaneously, the same will be true for the Chief Justice. They will be brought into each other's presence (there may even be procedures for virtual presence) and the oath will be administered.

ETA: Named successors receive briefings to go over this upon taking their offices. Upon the sickness taking hold of either one of them and again when both, more briefings and meetings will occur. Secret Service personnel will be assigned in preparation, etc.

Not sure if your comment was serious or not... but I think the previous poster wasn't suggesting a legal change in the order of succession...

I think they were suggesting the Republicans would engage in illegal activities... Pretend that Trump/Pence are both healthy, send out the occasional tweet to look like Trump is alive, and continue to cram through judicial appointments and the like, all pretending Trump was still directing the process.

Like a sort of Weekend at Bernies. Or the movie Dave.

Pretend that Trump/Pence are both healthy, send out the occasional tweet to look like Trump is alive, and continue to cram through judicial appointments and the like, all pretending Trump was still directing the process.

I don't think the whole "block Pelosi by pretending Trump is still healthy" was a serious suggestion. Yes, it would pretty much require conspiracy-level thinking. I think it was more an observation about how corrupt the republican party has become. We are willing to believe they would try to do almost anything to maintain power because, well, they have... (accepting assistance from foreign governments, leaving a corrupt president in charge, etc.)

Follow the procedures outlined for that scenario which they spend an extraordinary amount of time reviewing and preparing for.

They don't just walk around looking hard all day. They recieve training and guidance on legal issues surrounding the continuity of government.

But someone on a forum has figured out what they missed that somehow allows the Majority Leader of the Senate to argue with them about it.

This is the same hubris as people who know more than those pesky doctors with their fancy degrees.

The President being incapacitated isn't going to paralyze the SS while someone looks up what to do in the "Big Book of What to Do When the **** Hits the Fan."

I don't think the whole "block Pelosi by pretending Trump is still healthy" was a serious suggestion. Yes, it would pretty much require conspiracy-level thinking. I think it was more an observation about how corrupt the republican party has become. We are willing to believe they would try to do almost anything to maintain power because, well, they have... (accepting assistance from foreign governments, leaving a corrupt president in charge, etc.)
