The Trump Presidency: Part 21

The attempt worked as usual. I'm not so sure I would call the people who are doing the triggering idiots rather than those who get triggered over and over and over again.

It's a sad consequence of having somewhat objective standards about what constitutes truth, respect, and so on. Really, though, there's nothing good, whatsoever, when it comes to "good at trolling most of the people he's supposed to be serving" being counted as a positive point in a leader.

I would dispute that you can simply change the healthcare system in that way without changing the culture and a lot else besides, both as a necessary condition of being able to make such a change, and a consequence of having made it. To the extent that the success of the US has some relationship to individualism, self reliance, etc... UHC seems to me like a step in the opposite direction towards a more paternalistic, European way of doing things. Maybe it's worth it regardless?

You don't have to dispute something that I did not propose. I didn't say that you can simply exchange one system for the other; I said I wondered how many people living in countries with a UHC system would want to exchange their system for the US system.

I do agree that the mindset/culture of many Americans would have to change in order to bring in a UHC system. Primarily, those who consider almost any kind of government oversight (except for things they approve) some kind of infringement on their 'liberty'.But it's odd how they'll take Medicare when they can. I think it will be a slow, but eventual change-over starting with a combination of the two systems.

I'm not watching the PM Trumpathon, but my wife is. She says he's blaming Obama for faulty tests again.

Of course he is. He's been fact checked on his "the shelves were bare" lies again but that never stops him. He's also lying again about VA wanting to "take your 2nd Amendment/guns away". This is what the new VA laws say:

1. ‘Red Flag’ law
This measure allows police and prosecutors to temporarily take guns away from people judged to be a risk to themselves or others...
Subject to a court hearing, the risk order could be issued for up to six months.
People who are subject to a substantial risk order are disqualified from having or getting a concealed carry permit.

No guns for people under protective orders

...this measure prohibits any person subject to a permanent protective order — which can last for up to two years — from possessing firearms while the order is in effect.

3. Expanded background checks

This measure expands background checks for all gun sales. Currently, only licensed firearms dealers are required to conduct background checks before making sales.
To smooth over differences between the House and Senate versions, lawmakers agreed the expanded checks would only apply to gun sales, not all gun transfers (such as trades and loans), as the original version of the House bill called for.

4. Reporting lost or stolen guns
The law requires gun owners to report lost or stolen guns to police within 48 hours.

5. In-person safety training for concealed carry permits
This measure tightens training requirements for people applying for concealed carry permits, requiring them to complete an in-person safety course.

6. Cities and towns can ban guns in public buildings

The measure allows Virginia localities to ban guns in public buildings, parks and other areas, including recreation and community centers. The law also applies to streets where events or rallies requiring permits are taking place.

7. One handgun per month

This measure restores the state’s former one-handgun-per-month law. The measure prohibits any person who is not a licensed firearms dealer from buying more than one handgun in a 30-day period.
The bill exempts people who have been granted a special certificate by Virginia State Police who have undergone an enhanced background check; law enforcement officers; state and local corrections officers; licensed private security companies; people who had a handgun stolen or “irretrievably lost”; and purchases of antique firearms.
In order to win Senate passage, lawmakers also voted to exempt concealed-carry permit holders from the limit.

8. Tougher penalties for unsecured loaded guns

This new law sets down stricter penalties for “recklessly leaving” a loaded, unsecured gun in a way “that endangers the life or limb” of a child under 14.
The bill increases the penalty from a Class 3 misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class 1 misdemeanor (punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $2,500).

Other measures
Other pieces of gun-related legislation approved by lawmakers this session include:

• Allowing gun buyback programs that destroy guns rather than the current requirement that the guns be resold.
• A measure to bar local school boards from allowing anyone to carry firearms on school property except for people already expressly authorized by law, such as school resources officers.
• Establishing a voluntary “do not sell list” for guns that people could put themselves on, as part of an effort to prevent suicides.
• Requiring registered home day cares to keep guns locked and away from children.
• Making most day cares gun-free zones, similar to schools for older children.

back to talking about love letters from Kim

He also claimed we'd be at war with NK right now if it weren't for him. Somebody through some cold water on the moron and wake him up from his dreams. Or throw it on me. Maybe his whole presidency is just me having a nightmare.

I just note that many of those provisions have been imposed by numerous other states. The "red flag" laws in particular have gotten bipartisan support in Congress and in state legislatures. Trump's rant is just a senseless play to his simple-minded base.

Trump has saved the world for NK, Iran, and Russia! All bow down and give thanks to Donnie the Magificent!

He said very little about Covid 19 and took the opportunity to, once again, use his "Pandemic Briefing" as a campaign vehicle to tell us what a wonderful job he's doing as president and criticize (lie about) Democrats.

he said
You are lucky I was elected as there would have been a war with North Korea, who knows it might be over now

We have a couple members who take great joy in crowing about how good Trump is at 'triggering the libtards'. But Trump is also very good at triggering his base. Claiming the Dems are going to take their guns away is one of his favorites. The new VA laws only temporarily take guns away from people who are court ordered as being a danger to themselves or others. Wow...what an awful thing to do!

Has anyone made a supercut of Trump blaming everyone but himself from these White House rallies?

Maybe his whole presidency is just me having a nightmare.

If you haven’t already, watch the season premiere of The Good Fight on CBS.

If you haven’t been following it, you’ll miss a lot of references, but I think even going in cold you’ll enjoy it. It definitely relates to your “nightmare” reference.

If you do check it out, let me know what you think.

Trump Tweets

China wants Sleepy Joe sooo badly. They want all of those billions of dollars that they have been paying to the U.S. back, and much more. Joe is an easy mark, their DREAM CANDIDATE!

Projecting again. Recall how he got played by li'l Kim, with whom he "fell in love."

It's not projecting, it's diverting. Since he's been accused of being a Russian puppet, he wants Biden painted as a puppet of China.

Yeah. That American individualism. Those rugged loners sure helped to beat down Hitler and Tojo. Those ivory tower-residing eggheads sure cooked up a nuke in quick time. Those resourceful tinkerers sure worked a miracle in putting men on the Moon.

Oh, wait. Just like anywhere else, such massive undertakings succeed pretty much entirely due to cooperative teamwork.

What it is is an attempt to trigger the libs. Take a noted black icon and abuse their image for your own idiotic purposes. Triggering the libs is number 1 on the agenda of right wing idiots after all.

ANd it's both transparent, and obviously projection. Rosa Parks fought not only against "sitting in the back seat", partly because she was already in the back and was told to get up because the white section was full, so they were moving the "white" section further back and heaven forbid a white man sit next to her. But it was also because she was a sexual assault investigator with the NAACP - both protecting black men from false accusations, and going after white men who, until then, were allowed to rape and assault black women with impunity. MAGAts, OTOH, voted for a modern-day white supremacist, so they're closer to the guys that stomped the floor when George Wallace began talking about the N-words.

These ding dongs? Not even close. They're being asked to stay at home, for the protection of themselves and their loved ones. I get that some of these folks are likely out of work and have no income to feed people, and the government should provide a solution for that...but that's not the GOP way, now is it? And frankly, if you have multiple assault rifles but no savings, I have to ask what the hell your priorities are.

One reason is that he ran on the oldest, simplest of political promises: "If you vote for me, I will make your life better," and the people who felt left behind and left out by a changing economy believed him. His clueless opponent told those people "You're a basket of deplorables."

I mildly disagree. Sure, he made a few nonsense promises (i.e., better health care at a lower cost) but he mostly ran on fear. Fear the Mexicans who will take your jobs, fear the black man, fear Clinton's higher taxes, fear Socialism, fear, fear, fear.

Remember the YUUUUGE caravans coming up from all those Mexican countries intending to overwhelm us and take our "values" away. The day after the election there was not one more word about them.

When it comes to things like elections, fear is a much more powerful force than hope and Trump exploited that fact to the utmost.

Really? In what respect? Aren't todays far left Marxists, or are we meaning something different here? I'm thinking of the Bernie supporters in the Veritas videos.

Wait! You believe Veritas videos are a reliable source of information? Really?
