LIBERATE MINNESOTA!
LIBERATE MICHIGAN!
LIBERATE VIRGINIA, and save your great 2nd Amendment. It is under siege!

Isn't this incitement to violence?

I also think the Senate is currently in recess and holding pro forma sessions. Trump is trying to make it sound like the Republicans are all there, ready to work, while the Democrats are all out of town on vacation.

The Hill has Democrats blocking the deal. Do you have a quote from Trump implying Democrats are on vacation? It would seem if he wanted to throw mud like he's be better of saying that they blocked it.

Quelle surprise
Indeed. My impression is that state funded healthcare is such a big issue in the US, that that is used to map between European and US politics. I'm not sure that that works. The far left in the US seem to be straight forward Marxists to me. The project veritas recordings - was the man who spoke positively about Stalin a 1960s far right type?

There's the Tweet that started the conversation in the first place, which said they need to end their vacation and come back to Washington.

Trump said:
Today people started losing their jobs because of Crazy Nancy Pelosi, Cryin’ Chuck Schumer, and the Radical Left, Do Nothing Democrats, who should immediately come back to Washington and approve legislation to help families in America. End your ENDLESS VACATION!

Notice that Trump makes no reference to Republicans not 'being on vacation" or to "come back to Washington".

Apologies, I missed it. maybe he is being unfair about vacation. The Democrats do seem to be claiming they are blocking a deal though, so....

They are because they want more funding for other things like hospitals included, not because they don't want more funding for the PPP.

...Just opinion, but I think another difference is that 40 years ago there were a lot of people that simply didn’t know any better...

Have to remember, forty years ago was 1980. Were things really that different back then?

Many political scientists say the internet and social media has changed things around. Going w-a-y back, to the 1960s, I had an uncle who was a devoted member of the NY Conservative Party and the NRA. He used to tell me stuff like the John Birch Society considered former president Dwight Eisenhower to be a Soviet dupe. That Eisenhower should be tried for treason. In the 1964 campaign in New York, all the Conservatives were denouncing President Johnson for signing the 1964 Civil Rights Act. They claimed the Act legalized discrimination against whites because the Act only forbid discrimination against blacks.

None of this was true, of course, and most people I knew thought it sounded insane. But nobody ever heard of this nonsense. It never gained traction. Back then those kinds of views were ignored by the mainstream press and by the three major TV networks. Now someone can 'tweet' this kind of stuff and in a few hours it has five million views. It becomes self-legitimizing.

It really has changed the national conversation. Making it cruder, degrading it. Now we have a president who calls his opponents crazy or sick in the head. Accuses them of advocating for crime and drugs. For open borders. Wanting to let violent criminals into the country. WTF?

Instead of the public rejecting this as smear tactics -- and not very clever ones -- people accept it as normal discourse.

We've become a nation of fear and loathing. We opened Pandora's box in the name of freedom of speech and ideas, and we can never close it again.

The problem is, all those elements you cite don't actually explain it. There's something more that's wrong with the US.

Every factor you listed applies to Canada as well. Probably 90% of our media consumption comes directly from US sources, essentially unfiltered. I grew up watching the same TV shows, and reading the same internet, that most Americans did.

But this current crisis is just emphasizing how little Canadian political culture, and social culture, actually resembles the US. We don't have provincial leaders sniping at the Federal leaders, or vice versa. We actually have a lot of people (I'm one of them) saying they're impressed with the crisis response actions of politicians they fundamentally opposed in our most recent elections. We don't have people leading protests demanding that we sacrifice a few hundred thousand citizens to shore up the economy.

There's some other factor at work that makes the US crazy. The details you listed, while they probably helped, are not sufficient.

They are because they want more funding for other things like hospitals included, not because they don't want more funding for the PPP.
Quite, so they have chosen to let PPP run out to haggle for a bunch of other stuff that they want. That seems like the point that Trump should be stressing. Whether most of them are on holiday or otherwise when they have decided not to vote to approve it is kind of secondary.

You would be wrong. Perhaps read up on the meaning of Marxist.

Hans
Which people specifically are we talking about. Maybe the people I'm thinking of are to the left of the people you are thinking of?

Presumably since the Republicans wanted to get this funding through they were going to make themselves available to vote on it. If not, the Democrats missed a trick there and could have made them look like fools by calling them on it.

Quite a tell there. Yet another far right admirer of dishonesty.
