Meanwhile in Cuba...

Susana Hurlich said:
Door by Door the Cuban Government Delivers Immune Boosting Medicine to the People

Hola from Havana. This morning at 7am, I took the first dose of the homeopathic medication ProvengHo-Vir that the Cuban health system is distributing. Late yesterday afternoon, at about 5pm, Dr. Yaisen, one of the three doctors working at our local family doctor clinic located some two blocks from my home, came by the house to give me the small 10 mL plastic bottle of ProvengHo-Vir and to explain how to use it. [...]

Without going into all the details about the composition of PrevengHo-Vir –other than saying that it includes components of the AH1N1 and AH3N2 influenza viruses and substances of a vaccine against seasonal flu – what this homeopathic medication does is to help prevent influenza and other
flu-like diseases, dengue and emerging (new!) viral infections.

PrevengHo-Vir is NOT a vaccine, but only an additional protection to help reinforce one’s immune system.

And it’s being distributed free to every household in Cuba (total population over 11.3 million; I have no idea how many households there are) through Cuba’s comprehensive public health system. At the grassroots level, this means the neighborhood Family Doctor and Nurse Clinic of which there are
11,432 located around the country coming under 449 polyclinics. Presently, Cuba has about one doctor for every 122 inhabitants and one nurse for every 128 inhabitants. [...]

Another important thing about Cuba’s medical system is that rather than being two-tiered, as is often the case in other countries, with “classical medicine” on the one hand and “alternative medicine” on the other, Cuba has ONE health system that includes it all. When you study to become a doctor, you also learn about homeopathic medicine in all its forms. And Cuba has a highly developed capacity in this regard. [...]

Just to mention: this morning, on the daily 11am televised and radio-transmitted Press Conference, it was the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal Miranda, who spoke. We now have 457 people who have tested positive for COVID-19 and since the first case was detected on March 11th, there have been twelve deaths. Twenty-seven have been given the all clear sign, two were evacuated, and sixteen are in serious condition. [...]

No reporting is ever going to be that granular, or accurate for more than a few minutes.

The MSM are reporting accurately e.g. BBC

The number of people confirmed to have had coronavirus and died has risen by 917 to 9,875.

So not saying that 917 people had died in the last 24 hours.

But this gets mistranslated (perhaps to support a particular political agenda?) as
917 deaths over last 24 hours in UK
This is a skeptic site, it is not unreasonable to expect people posting here to correctly interpret and report statistics, not to big them up.

I am not sure that distributing magic water (which is what any homeopathic medicine is) is a something to be celebrated. Whilst it is probably safe, it is in theory possible it could be contaminated with live virus or other pathogen, the people delivering home to home could be carrying infection, so it might be harmful. On the other hand we know placebos have a real effect so it might have some benefits.

Not gonna work. 'Accept the consequences' would lead to bigger loss of life then so far anywhere. Complete collapse of healthcare in week. After that people will lock themselves down even more than now, and economic effects will be even worse. And if the food supplies collapse, everything will descend into chaos. You won't have to worry about economics of USA anymore. ...

Whoah! A little too much boomer sci-fi, boomer!

...There will be no USA. Just good old Wild West.

And? Doing some serious Tex Wheeler ******!

Then it will just take off again and all the pain we have suffered so far will be for nothing.
Plus, what will the economic impact of losing tens-to-hundreds of thousands of sources of productivity and/or aggregate demand?

Assuming, of course, we've accepted the underlying premise that there's a dollar limit beyond which we find human suffering and death negotiable.

Good news everyone. A lockdown such as Australia has imposed does work. It just takes time. Before the lockdown took effect Australia was getting 3-400 new cases per day. The last week or so it was about 100 per day. The latest figure, hot off the press is 21 cases. Will have to wait a few days to confirm that this number can be sustained and not an artifact of too many people eating too many easter eggs [off topic](I wonder what the impact of this virus has on Easter egg sales)[/off topic]. If so, the world is saved, and I was wrong in all my predictions above. And I am happy.

Ditto New Zealand.
The pied piper gathered up the bucky balls.

Figures from England are suggesting that in addition to males being three times more likely to become seriously ill and die from this than females, people of middle eastern ethnicity are also disproportionately affected.

This covid must be eliminated. It is obviously sexist and racist. We can't stand for this. Let's howl. It's howl we raise awareness of this identity discrimination.

And such on and so forth or whatnot.

(No offense meant to your post, Rolfe.)

I've seen the claim in a couple of places that a cost to the US economy of $100 million leads to 1 additional death due to more people being forced into poverty.

Yep! Well done you Antipodeans!

You're doing a great job!

This is the bit I don't get. Where does this idea come from that people think it will be a panacea to prevent infection? When the message about social distancing, hand washing, not touching face etc has been hammered home for so long, why would wearing this extra level of protection suddenly make people forget about all those other messages? This is certainly not the case in Hong Kong. Where is the evidence for this idea?

It's a small sample, but 5 out of the 6 mask-wearers that I encountered in my last 2 trips to the grocery store walked past other people (including me) at a normal pre-pandemic distance. Two of them squeezed past me by walking the wrong way on an aisle marked for 1-way traffic after entering the aisle that I was already in.

(I do my grocery shopping the last hour the store is open to avoid crowds, though this usually results in the store being out of at least 1 item that I'm looking for.)
