Biden for President?

Well, an inanimate object would be better than the incumbent, so a person with a heart and sense to trust experts is an infinite improvement. That's about all that there is to it.

It's not flu. It appears that the death rate is 1 to 2 percent -- between one and two of every 100 people who contract it will die -- and around 20 percent will need to be hospitalized. No, making it part of the landscape is not the solution.

I think this shows the difference between Trumpublicans and everyone else. Trumpublicans see people as numbers and as things to be used and expendable. See the post after yours for more evidence of this.

Then we better come up with a vaccine. Indefinite economic shutdown is not a valid solution.

Why not?

Let's consider the opposing opinion for a moment. Yes, if this virus is allowed to run wild it'll probably kill more people, presumably because the medical system will be unable to treat all those who need it. But then it could result in a more widespread immunity before we manage to get the vaccine. It's not crazy to suggest that we can't handle a lockdown that lasts much more than two months.

What I'm saying is that we can't dismiss out of hand the idea that while what we're doing now might save lives in the short term, it might hurt us more in the long term.

This may sound harsh or callous to you but sometimes important decisions involve determining who will die. I know it's not convenient to think this in our hyper-comfortable modern world, but it remains true as soon as a crisis like this rears its head.

Right now we don't know which of the two solutions is the best, and we might never know, but we can't just presume that we know, either. Maybe there's a way to at least play the odds.

I'd go with what the medical experts and epidemiologists are saying, not what the Trumpanzees insist. I think public health is much more important that the stock market and Trump's re-election.

It's not so much deciding who will die as deciding what number of deaths and suffering is less bad than the alternative number of deaths and suffering - and in this case, it's almost impossible to model. We certainly won't get the exact right answer, but hopefully we'll get one of the least bad wrong ones.

Yes, and as usual we should listen to the experts more than laypeople... however expertise is always given with a goal in mind. If the only goal is to save as many lives as possible, then expertise is given towards this goal. But it's not the only goal, so the question is, are we putting priority on one thing and forgetting something else that would come back and bite us in the rear?

Let's think about it a bit before reflex-posting.

Not that I think Biden or anybody connected to him cares at all about this, but, hypothetically, just suppose they might want to send the progressives a message of "OK, we're done spitting at you now, we'd like to make peace and join together".

How could the Biden campaign send that message? They definitely won't ever consider supporting any progressive policies, and even if they did claim to, the claim wouldn't be believable. So pretty much the only way left would be with his VP choice. So if we figure he sticks with the promise that it'll be a woman: who?

Ocasio-Cortez is technically too young, and Pressley, Omar, and Tlaib are technically not but could easily seem like it anyway. So... Barbara Lee? Pramila Jayapal?

Biden’s mumblings as blank slate...I like it! :D

If that’s what he is getting at, then I am in agreement. Seems to be what Trump thinks too, even though he gets a lot of **** for it.

We can’t shutdown much longer, let’s be real. Many businesses are already not going to survive this. Individuals are not going to financially weather this. We can’t dole out 2 trill every couple of months. We can’t bail everyone out.

There has to be a balance between minimizing deaths and minimizing economic damage. “Yay, most of us survived! Now we are free to go out and explore the smoldering hellscape that remains!”

VP pick is easily the most transparent and irrelevant gesture Biden could possibly make. I don't know what would be more depressing: If Biden actually did it, or if progressives actually fell for it.

Neither option is depressing as the idea of progressives holding out for some gesture from Biden, before they'll condescend to come together and support a candidate.

ETA: Delvo, if Biden does pick a woman VP, are you saying you'll put aside your grievances and work with the moderate wing of the party in spite of their bad attitude?

You seem to think it's likely that Biden does not follow through with a woman as VP candidate. Is that correct?

My bet is on Tully Blanchard for VP.

Perhaps if we had a competent administration at the helm this wouldn’t be so stark of a dilemma.

Perhaps. But the options seem to be limited to Joe Biden or Donald Trump. Better luck next time, I guess.

Trump has already proven to be terrible, so it’s almost inconceivable that Biden could somehow have been worse in his response.

I would vote for just about anyone who doesn’t say things like “I don’t take responsibility at all” during a crisis and tries to blame everyone else for their leadership failures.

And Joe Biden is there for you.
