The Trump Presidency: Part 20

I have to ask;Why do you hate America so much?

I was going to write a long piece about why my attitude changed from admiration to disgust, but this single story has pretty well all of the elements that make USA the world's shame, not leader: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2019/dec/27/eddie-gallagher-trump-navy-seal-iraq

Just a reminder that half of us are not to blame.

Mate, I did say "most" and not "all". Sadly, the numbers approving of Trump at this time make it a certainty they're in the majority.

I have quite a number of American friends who are as disgusted by the US right as I am. I pity the poor buggers (and you) having to share a country with the mad, racist, nationalistic, and mainly evangelical, filth that approve of the way America acts.

A classic example of the change is how USA has gone from McCarthy and Reds under the Beds to "Rather Russia than Democrat" in just over half a century.

Of course he also shows a lot of ignorance of US politics..it's not that easy to just rise up and kick somebodyout of the White House...

I do realise that, but if his approval rating and re-election chances were down in low single figures, where they bloody well ought to be, his own party would throw him out.

Well my artitude toware New Zealand is chainging, from admiration to a bunch of arrogant snobs who think they are vastly superior to every body else on earth...

Don't worry! He may not have the legal power to do that and we all know how conscientious Trump is about following the law.

But this takes it to a new high...unless he is jsut talking crap, which is a srtrong possibllity.

Trump tweets

With the courage of our doctors and nurses, with the skill of our scientists and innovators, with the determination of the American People, and with the grace of God, WE WILL WIN THIS WAR. When we achieve this victory, we will emerge stronger and more united than ever before!

I see Trump is still playing at being a 'war' president. Good thing he had all that military training...in his military prep school where he was sent for misbehaving.

Thank you for your service, Cadet Bone Spurs.

I think that's because morally, we absolutely are.

I'll back our history against any other country in the world. First to allow women the vote, first with universal suffrage, designers of the first true welfare state, protested against both American and French nuclear testing and weapons, instrumental in bringing the end of Apartheid, dropped no drones on innocent parties and have started exactly zero wars, although we were first to join Britain in WWII - when did your lot join, by the way?*

Yeah, I agree we have the absolute right to consider ourselves morally superior to every other country on the planet. The fact that our PM probably rates as the world's favourite politician doesn't hurt, while yours is last doesn't do our rep much harm either.

We have the best rugby team in the universe as well. And happen to hold the America's Cup.

* we never got into that whole slavery thing at any stage, either, although we did kill a lot of whales, to our shame.

And as usual, where'd Trump get the idea to quarantine New York, New Jersey and parts of Connecticut? He told reporters at the White House today: "Some people would like to see" it.

You want Fake News? This is Fake News. Who are these "some people?" He never says. Because they don't exist? You know what else some people are saying they'd like to see? (I'm one of them!)

I wouldn't put it past Il Douche to quarantine everything blue that he possibly can and deny as much assistance as possible just to kill off as many people who'll vote against him in December as possible.

He and his class have already said they're willing to do it to help their stock portfolios after all, what's the difference if it's for an election?

Female Reporter: “Can everyone who needs a ventilator get one?”
Trump: “Look, don’t be a cutie-pie, okay?”

C'mon, that's a pretty good reply. Trump didn't fall into her little trap.

When I watched video of the incident, it was my impression that Trump was responding to a male, which made it even weirder. I probably mis-watched (:)) it.

ETA: It was a male.

While I agree with much of what you say, I do take exception to two:

"...we were first to join Britain in WWII - when did your lot join, by the way?"

1) We joined a European and Asian war after we were attacked. We didn't start that war nor did it involve the U.S. up until Dec. 7, 1941. The US, unlike Britain and France, had made no promises to protect Poland. That wasn't done out of the goodness of their hearts but because they saw German expansion as a threat to themselves and their foreign empires. The US faced no such threat. We declared war against Japan after being attacked and Germany declared war on the US.

However, before entering the war itself, the US supplied GB with billions of dollars worth of military weapons, equipment, food, and other supplies to help in the fight against Hitler with the Lend Lease Act.

The US is criticized for sticking its nose into other countries' business all the time so it's rather hypocritical to criticize it for not sending its boys and men to die on European/Asian soil when, frankly, that war had nothing to do with us until Japan and Germany made it our business.

2) As for "we never got into that whole slavery thing at any stage" that's because the circumstances of the settling of New Zealand were very different to that of the American colonies. It was the British who brought the first African slaves to the American colonies in 1619 when slavery was legal. The British had a very flourishing slave trade and its American/Caribbean colonies were the main recipients.

New Zealand wasn't colonized by the British until after GB had abolished slavery in its colonies in 1833 so no slaves were brought there. So New Zealand cannot claim to be morally superior for not getting "into that whole slavery thing".

Trump has decided against quarantining NY, NJ, et al. Someone finally must have convinced him that HE decided against it.

That's some good news.
“On the recommendation of the White House CoronaVirus Task Force, and upon consultation with the Governor’s of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, I have asked the @CDCgov to issue a strong Travel Advisory, to be administered by the Governors, in consultation with the Federal Government,” Trump announced late Saturday on Twitter. “A quarantine will not be necessary. Full details will be released by CDC tonight. Thank you! Link

This entire episode was unnecessary. Absolute worst president we have ever had. No other president even comes close. The absolute pits. Like De Niro said, we have a whack job as president. :(

When he couldn't have done more u-turns on the disease and been more useless and spiteful than he has, his approval rating for handling the outbreak is at 49%, against 44% who disapprove.

At the same time, his overall approval rating is at the highest level since about 3 hours after inauguration.

I'm not concerned about those numbers. When a country is threatened by external or internal forces, the citizens tend to rally around their leader. Look here (slide down a couple of screens) to see Bush's approval rating after 911. But it's not an America-only phenomenon.

In fact, what I find notable is how little of a bump he's gotten. His approval rating went up what? less than 10 points? BFD.

FTFTrump. For being such a genius, someone needs to proofread his tweets.
