The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Well, this might sound harsh. But enough Americans via the Electoral College bought the tickets and now you get to enjoy the ride. The experiment of shining corporate city on an absurdly plutocratic hill with lots of primitive fundamentalists supporting it on the slopes goes merrily on...

You mean enough people were CLAIMED by the vote-rigging GOP who counted the votes bought the ticket. The GOP has had vote-flipping software since at least 2000. And if they didn't, they could easily get it from their Putin buddies.

You omitted "Trump Tweets" from that post, but it works because he never wrote that.
He may have said it but he also tweeted it. (This was in reaction to Asian-Americans complaining they were being harassed in public).

It is very important that we totally protect our Asian American community in the United States, and all around the world. They are amazing people, and the spreading of the Virus....

...is NOT their fault in any way, shape, or form. They are working closely with us to get rid of it. WE WILL PREVAIL TOGETHER. Link

Just for the record, that 1% isn't 1% of the total population, it's 1% of those infected. If 1% of the population in China had died, that would be close to 14 million deaths. Instead it's reported to be about 3,300. That's a death rate for those who contract the disease (about 82,000) of about 4%. That's still very high.

And with no controls what percentage of the population will get it 30-70%? Over a million dead is pretty much a given.

See china did rather forced social distancing to stop the spread, if they said "screw it, its only 14 million" and ignored it that would be rather different.

No big loss. They are just a replacement for Trump rallies. Eventually he will start talking about his totally unfair impeachment, then Hillary's lost 30 000 emails. Then Comey. Rinse, repeat.

Why do his supporters like hearing him whine like that all the time? That is one of the strangest things.

What did Oates say?

"I am just going outside and may be some time."

I get the reference.

I was once able to see Scott’s journal at the British Library. Reading the famous last entry , “for God’s sake look after our people!” sent chills down my spine.

His ability to pivot is amazing! So reminiscent of Orwell’s novels. But he is still calling it the “China Virus” right? In fact he consciously changed the word from Covid-19 to China in his script for a TV appearance. Now he is trying to sell, “Gee why would anyone blame Asians?” If challenged I am sure he would say, “I didn't mean those Asians. Just the bad ones, like those in China. Or people like them...”. What a manipulator of the racists and the stupid! But then I am repeating myself. It’s his defenders of such crap that I can’t understand. Do they really not get it? Many are not racist or stupid, but are they so naive that they are being manipulated in the same way?

I’ve always been fascinated by the infinite variety of human behaviors.

I am not however skilled at explaining it all.

Is it possible that some of these Trump supporters who defend him are akin to abused spouses who defend their abuser? I can see some parallels. He doesn’t respect them. They are a bit afraid of leaving him. He has convinced many that things will become indescribably worse if they leave him or if they even question his behavior or motives. They know that if they tried to leave, many of their friends would not provide any emotional support - in fact they would verbally assault anyone who tried to leave.

...
What does Trump really think? Who knows. I'm sure "Our people want to go back to work," and "The cure can not be worse than the disease," is trending really really well on social media and therefore I expect Donnie to keep saying it.

Certain Republicans have almost outright said that on Fox. If you're an old person, it's patriotic to die for the greater economic good of the country, apparently.
Indeed.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (69) thinks many grandparents would be willing to expose themselves to a potentially deadly illness to protect the economic futures of their grandchildren.

This article in Esquire articulated the divide between people like myself and the alt-right in the starkest terms yet. The partisan divide is even more entrenched when you look at the attitude the stock market matters and deaths are discussed as nothing more than a necessary evil.

It is a very partisan discussion. I welcome our right leaning members to voice their concerns if they believe the article is distorting the facts. I have a definite confirmation bias.

No Thanks, I Will Not Immolate Myself on the Altar of Your Stock Portfolio
... Not only does El Caudillo del Mar-a-Lago want to “reopen the country,” as he put it in his Fauci-less meeting of the Coronavirus SuperFriends on Monday night,... He wants to declare victory and get out.

However, it’s not just the president*. Over the past couple of days, the response in certain quarters has turned ghoulish. Quite simply, it is becoming a kind of revealed wisdom on the right that we’re going to have to take some casualties—especially among we Olds—to get the economy moving again. ...

...once the president* started sharing this view, the other, lesser maniacs in the ranks of Republican politicians threw open the afterburners.

That's an example, the article is well worth reading and cites specific examples including an exchange between Dan Patrick, the lieutenant governor of Texas, and Tucker Carlson.
Tucker, no one reached out to me and asked me, as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren. If that’s the exchange, I’m all in. ...
He goes on to suggests grandparents sacrifice themselves to save the economy of their grandchildren.

Another example:
Conservative punditry went even further than Patrick did. R.R. Reno, the editor of First Things, American Catholicism’s most prominent Pius IX fanzine, explained at length that demonic forces may be at work in the efforts to keep people from being dead.

Words fail me:
R.R. Reno: "There is a demonic side to the sentimentalism of saving lives at any cost. Satan rules a kingdom in which the ultimate power of death is announced morning, noon, and night. But Satan cannot rule directly. God alone has the power of life and death, and thus Satan can only rule indirectly. He must rely on our fear of death. In our simple-minded picture of things,... "

And here are the people giving all the federal judge nominees to Trump that McConnell then rushes through confirmation:
And whoever it is that funds The Federalist got in on the action as well.
Of course, it sounds very callous to talk about considering the costs. It seems harsh to ask whether the nation might be better off letting a few hundred thousand people die. Probably for that reason, few have been willing to do so publicly thus far. Yet honestly facing reality is not callous, and refusing even to consider whether the present response constitutes an even greater evil than the one it intends to mitigate would be cowardly.
The Federalist Society goes on.

I should add another place I differ from these people. This is their denialist fantasy. In reality if they actually try it, it won't work. People will be too ill to work, hospitals will be in even bigger trouble, understaffed and under equipped. And it won't be long before even those kids who ignored the risks and went on Spring Break adventures see enough of their friends really sick, they they will stay home like the rest of us.

Trump wants "Packed Churches " on Easter Sunday.
THe man is just insane.

Of course, he doesn’t want to see a packed church from the inside!

This is one point I am willing to attack the believers on. One can worship God without being in a crowded church. Wanting to be in church while there is a chance that your presence will endanger the lives of others is most certainly NOT part of Jesus’s message.

Keep in mind that the groundwork for this has also been laid in the churches these scumbags attend. Making money is vitally important to certain brands of US "Christianity."
