The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Here's a copy of a post I made in the main COVID-19 thread [Continuation] 2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2], with an update.

The update: the 1:10 population ratio is more accurately 1:8.7, meaning if something happens to 10 people in Canada, then it's likely it will happen to 87 people in the United States.

Now let's apply the latest numbers from Wikipedia:

Metric | Canada | Expected US number based on 1:8.7 ratio | Actual US Number | Actual Canada:US Ratio
COVID-19 cases|1,470|12,789|33,889|1:23
COVID-19 deaths|21|183|428|1:20

The bottom line is the USA is getting hit twice as hard as Canada is, and the 1:23 ratio in Canadian vs US cases has been widening in the last few days—it was 1:17 three days ago. And the US still hasn't caught up to Canada's testing rate. Canada has tested 2,346 people per million population while the US has tested only 695 per million.

As far as I'm concerned, these numbers are a direct result of the Trump Administration's downplaying of the threat back in the February to mid-March timeframe. Canada was taking it seriously all that time, if not acting as quickly as I would have liked.

Canada: our annoying little brother. "But Mom said you're not allowed to go out." **** off, butter tarts. We got this. Aim for the bushes.

Please, if there is a God in heaven, keep this idiot off the school board. She's the epitome of stupid.

Maybe Nevada could draw the school districts to separate the Red areas from the American areas. That way, Trumptrash families could have separate schools, away from Americans.

Saw a clip of Trump from 20 years ago and I couldn't help but be struck by the contrast between that squirrely bright-eyed guy and the bloated, waddling, disgusting racoon we see now. Also, he doesn't look well. Very heavy on his feet. Could be some of that irritability, that querilousness, is because he just doesn't have the energy, mental or physical, that he needs.

Cuomo for president.
Well remember we all only have a set amount of energy over our lifetime so he may be starting to run low.

I watch and listen to the Fake News, CNN, MSDNC, ABC, NBC, CBS, some of FOX (desperately & foolishly pleading to be politically correct), the @nytimes, & the @washingtonpost, and all I see is hatred of me at any cost. Don’t they understand that they are destroying themselves?

My friend (always there when I’ve needed him!), Senator @RandPaul, was just tested “positive” from the Chinese Virus. That is not good! He is strong and will get better. Just spoke to him and he was in good spirits.

WE CANNOT LET THE CURE BE WORSE THAN THE PROBLEM ITSELF. AT THE END OF THE 15 DAY PERIOD, WE WILL MAKE A DECISION AS TO WHICH WAY WE WANT TO GO!

Even in the middle of a national crisis, President Trump finds a way to whine about how horrid people are being to him.

This apparently straight from Fox News:

Fox News host Steve Hilton blasted “our ruling class and their TV mouthpieces whipping up fear” over the coronavirus outbreak on Sunday and warned that a recession due to shutdowns could be deadly.

Donald Trump seemed to be watching. Soon after the segment aired, the president fired off an all-caps tweet repeating some of Hilton’s talking points.

...

[Hilton remarked] “You know that famous phrase, ‘The cure is worse than the disease?’ That is exactly the territory we are hurting towards.”

...

“Poverty kills. Despair kills. This shutdown is deadly,” Hilton said. He then urged Trump to reassess the plan within 15 days.

It seems to me that as we approach the 15th day (not sure where he's counting from) we are seeing that community spread was greater than we thought, since the current cases are up, reflecting the two-week incubation period. To see if restrictions are working, we'd have to wait another 2 weeks, and then the numbers probably still go up, but partly due to wider-spread testing. We badly need more testing, of both sick people and seemingly healthy ones, to trace how this virus spreads. Though it would increase confirmed cases, it would lower the death rate but increase the percentage of mild cases reported.

I don't disagree with Trump's basic sentiment here - the economic damage is in itself a substantial worry, and that's not good for people's health either.

ETA: I see from above that it didn't originate with Trump. I wondered who put that bug in his ear.

Jan 22: We have it totally under control ... it's going to be just fine.

Jan 24: It will all work out well.

Jan 30: We have it very well under control. We have very little problem in this country at this moment — five. And those people are all recuperating successfully.

Jan 31: We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.

Feb 10: Looks like by April, you know, in theory, when it gets a little warmer, it miraculously goes away.

Feb 19: I think the numbers are going to get progressively better as we go along.

Feb 23: Very much under control.

March 2: It's very mild.

March 7: I'm not concerned at all.
There are posters in the originating thread with strong opinions about this. They have fallen oddly silent, as i hear only the familiar sound of crickets.

Off topic, I know. What he is describing is basically what happens in Australia already. And as far as I am aware, we aren't a "police state".

I don't think you looked closely at that list. How 'bout:

Institute proportional voting for House Delegations, meaning that when voting for House members, a voter would cast a ballot for the party rather than the individual candidate. The House delegation for that state would then be apportioned among the parties based on that vote.
.....
Establish a formal Fourth Branch of the Government to consist of the administrative and law enforcement agencies and their personnel. ....NO elected official would have ANY say in the appointment of regulators, judges, etc.....
Further Amend the 1A to explicitly EXCLUDE all forms of advertising, deceptive news articles (those that cannot be shown to be based on actual objective facts and information).
....
Most importantly, once and for all formally state that we are ONE United States for the purposes of law and governance. ALL citizens must be treated the same by the laws and programs EVERYwhere within the US. This would include participation in all Federal benefits programs such as Medicaid, the ACA, etc. NO more "states' rights" nonsense.

So voters wouldn't choose individual candidates, that unelected "Fourth Branch" would oversee and control all others, speech would have to be officially authorized, and the state and local governments would be abolished. I'm pretty sure Australians don't live like that.

Btw, unelected government officials already decide who gets to run for office in the USA. That's precisely what the GOP gerrymander actually is.
....

Gerrymanderng means redrawing Congressional districts to benefit the majority party after the decennial census. It is always approved by state legislatures -- not "unelected government officials" -- and Democrats have done it too. It doesn't have anything to do with who can run for office, just who has a better chance of getting elected.

Well remember we all only have a set amount of energy over our lifetime so he may be starting to run low.

This leech has already run out of yen qi (gen ki) and is siphoning what he needs from his adoring cattle.

The rallies energize him. And could be the death of him.

(Disclaimer: Woo-woo metaphorical only.)

Did we discuss this in this thread already?
As part of a legal requirement to transfer knowledge between administration, the Trump staff sat through a tabletop virus-outbreak excercise several days before the inauguration.

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/16/trump-inauguration-warning-scenario-pandemic-132797

POLITICO obtained documents from the meeting and spoke with more than a dozen attendees to help provide the most detailed reconstruction of the closed-door session yet. It was perhaps the most concrete and visible transition exercise that dealt with the possibility of pandemics, and top officials from both sides — whether they wanted to be there or not — were forced to confront a whole-of-government response to a crisis. The Trump team was told it could face specific challenges, such as shortages of ventilators, anti-viral drugs and other medical essentials, and that having a coordinated, unified national response was “paramount” — warnings that seem eerily prescient given the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Apparently the takeaways included lessons such as listening to experts, having a unified message, coordinating state and federal response, understanding that viruses don’t respect borders, etc.

I’ll leave it to more experienced posters to determine if today’s problems are the result of
(1) the participants being fired months or years ago for not describing the emperor’s clothes as gushingly as was expected,
(2) the exercise was run by Obama appointees so no one was listening or
(3) well, you know, that’s just how Trump is.

The chart on the left looks a little funny, since the US just passed 414 deaths. The line ends way above 400, closer to 500. Does anyone else see that?

467, according to Worldometers. Looks about right.

(Your mileage may vary. It went up between my searching and actually reaching the site.)

ETA: Something like 5000 new case in NY. That's more due to increased testing than increased infection, I guess.

And we should note, loudly and often, that every item on that list is the exact opposite of what Trump did, at least until he was dragged kicking and screaming into reality. And even then he's still dragging his feet, see for example his line about the Federal government not being a "shipping clerk", when the States asked him to actually do his ******* job, as the Federal government.

The New York Times changed headlines 3 times in order to satisfy the Radical Left. What should have been a good story got “worse & worse”, until the headline alone made it very unfair. Fake & Corrupt News that is very dangerous for our Country!

THIS IS WHY WE NEED BORDERS!
