The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Today was the first day I didn’t watch the news conference.

My life is better for it.

You know, same for me. I figure I'll get the most outrageous stuff repeated on the later news or their web pages, but I'm skipping those as well for the day. And I am quite enjoying this quiet time.

I just posted in another thread that one of the saddest parts of listening to Trump in his pressers is that I can't believe anything he says. Nothing. His history of lying is so profound that he has zero credibility. Whatever he says I just discard.

I generally don't listen to him at all. Aside from the fact that he sounds like a zombie when reading prepared statements, and a raging lunatic when speaking off-the-cuff, I'd prefer to get a version that's already fact-checked, lest something slip by my "Don't believe a word of what he says" filter.

It's the difference between "I am happy to report we..." and "I have...because I am awesome."

Yep. Both Obama and GWB (I listened to Clinton less in general - between caring for a 92-94 year old man earlier, and being in college later, there wasn't much opportunity for me to just sit and *listen*) were always very careful to give credit where it's due. I can see how certain government figures are doing well, particularly some state and local leaders like Cuomo, Gavin Newsom, and Larry Hogan, but Dolt 45 is...well, still a dolt.

So, we have his 45%-base combined with 10% of the country.

My question is what percent of the population understands science, exponential growth, international relations, history, and public health care well enough to make an insightful conclusion about whether or not the president and his administration are doing a good job. I’m guessing less than 33%. So it is pretty easy to find 10% of the population in that remaining 67%.

Disclaimer: I’ll admit I pulled that 33% out of my ass, so I won’t defend it if someone attacks it.

Also, I think at least 10% of the population doesn’t pay enough attention to questions to understand that when answering the question the actions of governors and mayors should be separated from the actions of the president.

I'll also say that it's better to look for trends in polling, than to overanalyze a single poll. The "Let's give everyone lots of money!" proposal, which is being pushed by everyone, may or may not have made people happier for now, but it's best to wait for more data before writing off the possibility of a mere bad sample.

I haven't watched any of them. My life is better than yours.
My wife has the news on all damn day long. I don't know how she does it. I walk into that room and go nuts.

You sound just like my husband. But there's a method to my madness: he's taken refuge renovating the laundry room.

Right.
As if published articles say “The president’s actions saved tens of thousands and much more than that, lives.”

One would think that someone so practiced at making things up would be better at it.

Hmm? I would rather expect a Murdoch rag and certain opinion writers to say overly fawning stuff like that, though?

Sorry for the derail.
I was at the Home Depot today for similar reasons as your husband. Seems that home improvement projects are second only to day drinking as a method of coping.
Personally, I like to combine the two :)

CNN twenty-four hour news is how I got him to reno my kitchen and dining room. I may need to put on FOX to get him to do some landscaping. He hates yard work.

He's there because no one in the military or law enforcement has the guts to remember their oath to the Consitution and the people, take out their service weapon, and say "Donald J. Trump, you are under arrest and hereby removed from office."

You're pointing your finger in the wrong direction. The guilty parties are the Republican members of the Senate. They go along with any dumpster fire Trump sets and when they had the perfectly legal opportunity to evict this clown via impeachment, all but one knuckled under.

If anyone did as you suggest, *I* would be among those who would agree with treason charges. It's not their job to be judge, jury and executioner.

In my fantasy world, every single one of those guys would be defeated. In a landslide vote. Then they would be indicted for violating their oath of office.

Dream on, baby, dream on! :)

Yes, this ^

Incompetrump minions are a vanishing species. The virus is affecting everyone in the country. It's not something the alt-white can blame on the Chinese and brown people when it hits so close to home. The Chinese and brown people simply don't make adequate scapegoats.

Yes, it is. And they will.

I agree. What CP is promoting is a military coup. Nuh uh.
I dream is for not only Trump to go down, but for that POS McConnell to go down in flames as well.

Do they expect Trump to lose the next election and be replaced by a Democrat who has more respect for the environment?

Yes. Setting up a drilling operation can take months and cost a ton of money. The suits in the top level offices can read the political climate as well as you and I. It is not only the possible loss by Trump that they have to consider but the future price per barrel of oil is a huge cloud on the horizon. Holding off on large commitments right now is just prudent decision-making.

The trend is positive for Trump. A few days ago he was down a couple of cents relative to Biden; now he's a penny ahead. The election is still a (regular) baseball season away, so it's way too soon to make firm predictions.

He doesn't have to. He just changes the lie based on what people call him out on.

Don't do that. He lies, sure, but the lies are so reliably the polar opposite of the truth that it's almost as good as a confession. Just read everything he says as if it was Opposite Day.
And whatever he accuses others of, he has almost certainly done.

Not really - his lies change day by day, even when his behavior doesn't. The reliable method is to

a) listen to experts, reporters, and the like;
b) watch what he and his jackals *do*.

His statements are filled with whatever he thinks will work best on his lizard-brained followers - even his racist statements are meant for a George Wallace "I began talking about ******* and they stomped the floor" reaction - even though he clearly believes it as well, given his decades-long streak of white supremacism.

I just read an article yesterday, that by closing the country down so early, so very early, we saved tens of thousands and much more than that, lives. So you know, you might want to report that, too.

...wait...what?
