The Trump Presidency: Part 20

Plus, some of those experts were women.

Women are experts on everything, especially after it's already happened. They're experts on not letting go of the past and refusing to shut up. Trump is right to ignore them, especially if they're under 5'5".

A portrait of Doc Fauci, who has had a lot of experience with Presidents.
“When you go to the White House, always say, in the back of your mind, that this may be the last time I’m going there because I might have to tell this president something he doesn’t like.

”“Depending upon the character of the president, if you give bad news they may say, ‘I don’t want this guy around anymore, he’s causing trouble,’ ” Fauci says. “So the first thing I decided was I would only speak the truth, based on the evidence I had and my purely clinical scientific judgment."

To poke at a couple more things...

Trump administration is just now thinking about lifting tariffs on medical supplies from China

Pulling out all the stops!

Most Quarantined Grand Princess Passengers Refused Covid-19 tests-often at Federal Officials' Urging

I suppose that this isn't anywhere close to as bad as a number of the other things, but... ugh.

Justice Dept. seeks emergency powers, including detaining people without trial indefinitely

They were already seeking that power, of course, and have made repeated attempts at it.

So you are saying that some Independents will approve of Trump on the virus, but Democrats simply won't?

How many of the one-star ratings are bogus?

How many of the five-star ratings are bogus?

[ETA - ninja'd by our resident martial artist, Joey Kung Pow, or some such ;) ; I need only have read his post, which was the very next!]

I’m not following your reasoning. Can you explain why hard-core alt-right and the milder versions of alt-right won’t be satisfied blaming everyone who isn’t white along with the white liberals?

Has any group of bigots ever said “overwhelming evidence and logic indicate that my reasoning was incorrect when I blamed this very troublesome problem (that threatens the existence of my country) solely on the target of my bigotry, therefore I will look at a variety of sources, weigh each one’s credibility, and construct a fair and objective conclusion about actual cause of the problem that I am facing”?
Wishful thinking and I'm sticking to it. :)

"He just went off on a tangent about "fake-news", "unfair stories" and "Sleepy Joe Biden". What an ass

The world is watching. The world is taking notes. And the world is making new plans for a new world after the outbreak passes and the USA has lost its pole position on the world stage.

I'm kicking myself for not learning Mandarin many years back when I had the opportunity....

I would say it is essential to point this out. Already, the Trump propaganda apparchik have begun to spin reality. While South Korean leaders were proactive in protecting their population, Trump was not. American citizens will pay for this, some with their lives. ...
Yep. Like Lucy telling Charlie Brown she won't pull the football away, they buy the lies yet again.

Second COvid briefing in a row that Trump has turned into a shouting match with anybody who dares asks him a tough question.
Now rumors he is considering firing Fauci for daring to contradict him.
And he is stupid enough to do it.

That would be good. Maybe Fauci could actually follow the evidence then instead of being an apologist for Trump.

You say that like Fauci would be in a position to access the evidence, then. Given that withholding the evidence is one of the primary tactics of the Trump Administration, that's not even remotely a sure thing.

That might just encourage more entrenchment, especially the spinned version. Sometimes it’s OK, or perhaps better, to let people come to their own realizations. Otherwise they can feel preached at, and the cognitive doors slam shut.

My brother just reflexively complains about Democrats, and yesterday told me Joe Biden had said something political. I just said, “He’s not the only one.” How much more did I need to say? “Your boy Trump has been doing that since Day One” seemed a little obvious. My brother’s reasonably bright; he’ll get there in the end. Probably.

That's a good point; it's important for the messaging to connect the pandemic to the Trump administration without coming off as preachy. I'm certainly no expert in doing that. I look at Fox News and, in my mind, they kind of come off as preachy or condescending to their viewers; evidently either that perception doesn't come through to their viewers or, due to confirmation bias, they simply let it slide. I don't think their hardcore viewership are reachable by "mainstream" media messaging, anyway; the key is the messaging to the independents.

I don't think so. Fauci is head of NIH. He has colleagues that would share but in addition to that, the US doesn't have a monopoly on research.

Today’s update
President Trump said:
I just read an article yesterday, that by closing the country down so early, so very early, we saved tens of thousands and much more than that, lives. So you know, you might want to report that, too.

Right.
As if published articles say “The president’s actions saved tens of thousands and much more than that, lives.”

One would think that someone so practiced at making things up would be better at it.

"And also the article said I look really thin and fit, not fat at all. You should report that. Not fat! The best!"

I just posted in another thread that one of the saddest parts of listening to Trump in his pressers is that I can't believe anything he says. Nothing. His history of lying is so profound that he has zero credibility. Whatever he says I just discard.
Don't do that. He lies, sure, but the lies are so reliably the polar opposite of the truth that it's almost as good as a confession. Just read everything he says as if it was Opposite Day.

And yet 55% approve of his handling of the Coronavirus outbreak:confused:

So, we have his 45%-base combined with 10% of the country.

My question is what percent of the population understands science, exponential growth, international relations, history, and public health care well enough to make an insightful conclusion about whether or not the president and his administration are doing a good job. I’m guessing less than 33%. So it is pretty easy to find 10% of the population in that remaining 67%.

Disclaimer: I’ll admit I pulled that 33% out of my ass, so I won’t defend it if someone attacks it.

Also, I think at least 10% of the population doesn’t pay enough attention to questions to understand that when answering the question the actions of governors and mayors should be separated from the actions of the president.
