The Trump Presidency: Part 20

From the latest presser, it's hard to decide whether Trump is channeling Oprah:
He's so worried about losing the election he's looking at passing money out. I bet he's still really tempted to pass it out to his rich cronies or those GOP ass kissers.

Bet he's tormented.

“There’s No Boogeyman He Can Attack”: Angry at Kushner, Trump Awakens to the COVID-19 Danger
For weeks, Trump and his son-in-law saw the novel coronavirus mostly as a media and political problem. But the spiraling cases, plunging markets, and a Mar-a-Lago cluster finally opened eyes.

...

Well, now we have the likely source of some of the utter nonsense that Trump's spewed.

Oh... and here's an interesting tidbit...

Hey! Carlson did something good for a change!

Too bad Trump and co are completely out of their depth and the plans prepared for a scenario just like this by the Obama Administration were thrown in the trash right after they were briefed on such during the transition. Going further, Trump's inaction and downplaying of the situation for over a month after he was told that such would likely lead to 1.7 million deaths by the CDC (not accounting for additional deaths due to the health care system being overwhelmed) is pretty much criminal.

I saw a quote on Twitter attributed to the President where he claimed something like, "I knew it was a pandemic before it was declared a pandemic."

Seriously.

Now, I don't have much expectation for Trumpet supporters, but I really have to ask, who in the blazes would be stupid enough to believe that?

Looks like Trump really likes the idea of giving people money, and since Republicans are in power they are all for exploding the deficit with socialist bribes to buy votes.

Remember when Trump thought a "massive" 2 billion dollar funding package would take care of this "hoax"?
What was that... 2 weeks ago?

George W. Bush was a great president -- right up until he wasn't. Turns out he wasn't a real conservative. Trump, too, isn't a real conservative. Real conservatives responsibly regulate the deficit -- you know, like Reagan.

And I'm a little pissed at Fox News dropping "estimated no new cases after 45 days" without explanation as though that's a calming thought.
Idiot... it's because there wouldn't be any more uninfected (worst case scenario).

Not that I wouldn't want $1,000 right now. But really, who here would feel financial relief with such a paltry amount? I spend that much on groceries in a month.

It's not that a grand solves anybody's problems, but it compounds within the economy. You spend an extra $1,000, and the businesses where you spend it get an extra $1,000 to buy stock and pay employees, and instead of being laid off they can pay their rent, buy stuff, etc. etc. The basic idea is to keep the economy functioning, and it could be effective, at least for awhile.

Yup.

Honestly, I have no problem believing that. He was informed that it was very likely to officially become a pandemic and cause a truly massive death toll in the US long before it was declared such if no serious measures were taken. That he lied over and over and over and over about pretty much everything to do with it is par for the course with him and his pathological narcissism (and thus lack of empathy). Remember, Trump is operating very similarly to the, for example, Chinese mayors that have repeatedly shown that they would prefer to squelch news about epidemics because they think that such reflects badly on them and they would much prefer to save face - and officially moving to counter those epidemics early on would mean effectively revealing that ugly thing that's happening under their watch.

Drain that Swamp!

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody, the state’s top legal officer, contracted with President Donald Trump’s Miami golf resort to host a crime prevention conference, despite the U.S. Constitution’s prohibition against his accepting money from a state.

The conference, set for late May, has been indefinitely postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic before any payments “were made or due,” said Lauren Cassedy, a spokesperson in Moody’s office.

Cassedy, though, would not explain why Moody, a Republican who was elected to the statewide job in 2018 after receiving Trump’s endorsement, chose to award the contract to Trump’s resort in the first place. Under its terms, some $70,000 of Florida taxpayer money likely would have gone to Trump National Doral. Nonprofit groups, local governments and others attending the event that had been set for late May likely would have spent an additional $600,000.

Mnuchin just siad the unemployment level might reach 20%/. If it reaches half of that, that is probably curtians for the GOP in November.

Somewhere upthread is a "write down a number" (US deaths) scenario. My thinking is between two and five hundred thousand.
Am I being overly optimistic?
Plus there's the very real possibility of a bog standard recurrence this winter and again next year.
Crap... I think I answered my own question.

Of course they can explode the deficit, then as soon as Democrats take the POTUS office, it will be all our fault and of course the only way to deal with it is to cut 'entitlements'.

GW Bush thinks the government has too much or "your money". He cuts taxes mostly on the rich of course.

Then we go to war and explode the deficit.

Trump comes into office and could care less about the deficit so he (and the GOP) give themselves huge tax breaks exploding the deficit even more.

Now we need emergency spending.

Deficits? Can't worry about that now, take back the tax cuts? Of course not.

:)

I see what you did there.

Well I would rather that bailout comes to us instead of the banks.
