The United States will be powerfully supporting those industries, like Airlines and others, that are particularly affected by the Chinese Virus. We will be stronger than ever before!

How.. racist of him.

It's just another example of how Trump understands (if nothing else) a basic principle of political demagoguery, and how to appeal to his base support- that as long as people have some "other" to blame for a problem, they're not apt to be looking too closely at the guy who's not solving it (and could, with this approach, be said to be adding to it). I saw a clip the other day, on Trevor Noah or maybe Seth Myers, where one of those idiots on Fox & Friends (Brian Kilmeade?), also called it a Chinese thing, and then added something like "and China still hasn't apologized for it, by the way." Right...America still hasn't apologized to the world for the Kardashians, either...what're you gonna do?

AG Barr has just sent a directive to US attorneys around the country urging them to prioritize prosecutions and investigations of scammers, fraudsters and cyber criminals looking to take advantage of the COVID-19 crisis.

Start with Paula White. Make an example of her! ;)
Paula White, a top official in the White House Office of Public Liaison, is scheduled to be the featured speaker at a fraudulent April conference promising "supernatural protection from the Coronavirus. The conference organizer claims that Christians aren't true to their faith unless they believe they can have magical protection from #Covid-19. They are endangering the lives of the elderly people who listen to their messages, beyond trying to make money fraudulently. Link

I saw a couple minions of his referring to it as the Wuhan virus. They're trying so desperately to make it not "our fault" in an effort to direct responsibility away from Trump.

The same geniuses in the media saying this Chinese virus is super-deadly also told us Hillary was going to win. Obama's Swine Flu infected millions!

Like, totally:

I guess you failed to notice that the vast majority of those referred to it as the Wuhan-CORONA virus. The first example was during the impeachment trial, the second is from early February and most of them aren't can't be dated. I'm talking about recently. Have you heard anyone refer to it as the Chinese or just Wuhan virus lately except Trump and his minions?

Try again.

Trump gave himself a 10 out of 10 in regards to the govt response to COVID-19, and who would know better than he? MAGAKAG!!

That's right, 10 out of 10. I hear so many liberals talk about giving "110%." Fake math!

Trump actually said this. This morning, as part of an announcement to the nation;

"It seems to me if we do a really good job, we’ll not only hold the death down to a level that’s much lower than the other way had we not done a good job"

This is probably what passes for profound among the Trump crowd.
Hey, at least it wasn't a lie.

I mean it was meaningless and poorly worded but the fact it wasn't lying is a step up from his normal drivel.

True leadership.

Could we get Obama back to handle this? Watching Trump is really ******* depressing.
Past Presidents are a resource that any sensible POTUS would be using. Obama would have been the perfect person to put in charge of the response, and I'm certain he would have stepped up. Instead you've got Mike Pence. Good luck with that.

Trump has spent the last three years trying to feed anything President Obama ever touched into a wood chipper because of the jokes he made at the White House Correspondents' Dinner. He offered to change the name of Denali back to Mount McKinley for crying out loud. It's more likely that I'll spontaneously sprout wings than that Trump would ask him for help.

I'm trying to imagine a scenario where, at some stage, maybe July, August, something like that, the US takes stock of infections and the death toll to that point, and then everyone celebrates.

It's clear trump it's just clinging to his hope that things won't be 'that bad'. In his view, they most likely won't be that bad because some deaths don't really bother him. His original naive hopes that this virus would be limited to China and do them some economic damage were ruined. His subsequent hopes that it would magically go away are currently being ruined, but he hasn't quite let go of that notion yet. His hopes that the stock market wouldn't suffer too much are completely blown but he's probably still hopeful of a resurgence at some stage and/or a way of taking advantage of the current state.

There will come a point where most countries will have some measure of control and their medical infrastructure will be in a position to handle demands, and yes, people will be relieved and happier, but some kind of big celebration? I don't know. I don't think so.

Someone made a great suggestion:

take a piece of paper, and write down what you think right now about how many people will die by November.
Then keep that paper safe until the November elections.

If Trump managed to stay under, he probably will win the election.
If the death toll is higher, he will lose.

I don't think it's about deaths from the virus. I think it's the disruption to ordinary life from the virus. For most Americans a thousand elderly strangers dying from a virus is a statistic. A month without a paycheck is a cataclysm. Unless the death toll is far huger than seems likely it's not the deaths that will matter, politically. It's the economic woes.

I'm uneasy with the whole "The worst this gets, the worst it makes Trump look" thing.

Mainly because it's easy to drift from that lane into the "Therefore we should want it to get as bad as possible" lane.

I don't want this to get any worse then it absolutely necessary just for possible political positives down the line.

I wrote the number 0 on a piece of toilet paper.
