2019-nCoV / Corona virus Pt 2

Yeah, the "It's just the flu bro" crowd has all but STFU... thankfully.

Also, the NHL has suspended operations and MLB has as well.

And I notice the Trump Worshipper here who has been pooh poohing this as Anti Trump media hysteria has been absent since ever since last night.

One of the people I work with went to the Sacramento Kings game last night, and today emailed us he is self quaranting us because of fear he was exposed to the virus.
I admit, seeing that on TV was Scary, since I live only three miles from the arena where the game was played.

The Big Die-Off start?

Perhaps. I predict the virus will do some damage, begin to wane and then be followed by a mutant virus that really hammers the planet. I still think cell phone microwaves are involved. Scary now that it is here. And the Ponzi economy will not escape the Big Correction this time.
How utterly bizarre. Did you learn this from your go-to source? (That being tarot cards.)

2 of my workers are in some serious ish right now. They are European citizens and need to renew their visas to stay here, but Europeans are not allowed into Guatemala right now. So, that means they will stay illegally and hopefully not lose access to return to the country in the future. Yikes.

Hopefully southern hemisphere countries that are now heading towards winter will be much more prepared than the northern hemisphere was and can limit the spread to a greater degree.

It was mentioned somewhere earlier in this thread that nearly 90% of the world's population lives in the Northern Hemisphere, so even if the same or a higher percentage of people are infected, the number of people will probably be less. That's what people are likely to look at, regardless of its accuracy.
"Only x-thousand people are infected. It's going away."

Genius.

The claim that Covid-19 will kill fewer people.

My apologies. I had no way to know that you were not asking for evidence for the factual claim of the other poster, and that you were in fact asking for evidence for his personal opinion.

Once again I gave you too much credit. For ****'s sake.

There are potential upsides to this - fewer flu cases, for example, and money will be saved on travel, NBA tickets, concessions etc. I'm thinking that encouraging retail spending could offset some financial impact. I have to visit a couple of big-box stores today to enable working at home - could drop $1K at Best Buy on a Mac Book. With less-crowded stores and a visible canister of isopropyl wipes I think this will be fine. As long as there are delivery people and people (or robots) to pack boxes, online retail might be well positioned to minimize the physical handling of shipments. A friend with diabetes is now having his groceries boxes packed for him and won't have to enter the store.

With some guidance on best procedures retail spending doesn't have to call off a cliff. Might soothe some jitters, actually.

I think it's a good idea to display hand sanitizer if you have to go out and try to maximize distance from other shoppers.

Are there any current travel restrictions between the two? Any planned?

They're thinking about it.

Australian Grand Prix is cancelled.

Yeah, but Super-Duper rugby is on!

Further evidence of China's recovery, all 16 temporary coronavirus hospitals now shut down.

If only we white countries would learn from that...

Hugely outweighed by lost wages alone.

Where are you going to find any? We've been out for three weeks. No rubbing alcohol or bleach left for the last two weeks. Not sure what's left aside from everclear

And Singapore, Taiwan, etc didn’t need to build temporary coronavirus hospitals. And likely won’t need to (but never say never).

And Iran, Italy, etc do not have the ability to do so. Despite needing to.

And here in the US? Well, we won’t need to either, because only US citizens and green card holders are allowed to fly in from 26 countries in Europe. And everyone knows that all the coronavirus cases here are caused by foreign nationals from China, Iran, Singapore, Taiwan, and those 26 European countries.

Other people on the thread have been pointing out, heat per se is not necessarily a problem for the virus, but it still could be seasonal. We can hope.
Indeed we can.

However, this being the SMMT section of the ISF, shouldn’t we be discussing science?

I’m sure we can leave hope to whatever it is that Pence does instead of using the scientific method ...

Thanks.

I did make the comment a million posts ago that other countries wouldn't have a hope in hell of sticking a quarantine on entire provinces, which seems to be what worked in putting the brakes on China's outbreak, so "not long" is my answer to that.

Meanwhile, some very ugly news for those hoping not to get it: https://www.theguardian.com/science...ead-by-people-yet-to-show-symptoms-scientists
Not long, to an astronomer may be ~200 million years. To a high energy particle physicist, ~10-23 seconds.

To a pollie, re when that infrastructure project will be finished, perhaps “a few months”; to the professional project manager, a decade.

Care to get a bit more specific?

There will be a vaccine, anti-virals are being tested for effectiveness.
The 1968 H3N2 pandemic killed around 34,00 in the USA, ~700,000 worldwide. This won't be as bad, even with Trump.
I take this to be a SWAG. Or perhaps a hope.

Would you care to make an OOM estimate of your own, and show your working?

The company that toll blends the hand sanitizer that we sell to our customers initially told us that there would be an 8 week delay on any future orders. They had a sudden gap in their production schedule, possibly due to raw material shortages from their suppliers, and we were able to get what would normally be a year's supply of the hand sanitizer that we sell to food processing plants for use by the workers. The question now is how long it will actually last.

Pence is in a CBS news interview now giving out more lies and incorrect information about testing in the US.

Outright lies and stupidity.

He actually claimed private labs were doing the testing but weren't required to report the results. What a lying piece of ****. Private labs were prohibited from testing because the CDC withheld permission.

Not true. Quest, LabCorp and a couple of others are doing them.
