Restaurant manager fired for accommodating a bigoted customer's demand

Read more carefully: is it illegal to make such a request? I'd be interested in the wording of said law.

Civil Rights Acts, as we all should know, are limited in policing behaviors. Many posters think they make any kind of bigotry illegal. They do not.

Here you go. The first paragraph clearly applies. I include the second because I suspect it also applies even if the stereotype/assumption was initially provided by the customer and was acceded to and implemented by the employer.

By the way: you've already explicitly claimed that you were initially trying to play Joe Morgue and other ISF members by your recent posts in this thread; I certainly think you are playing me to have me run around the web to find this information. That's okay: it is always nice to help inform other people of useful information.

II. What Discriminatory Practices Are Prohibited by These Laws? Under Title VII, the ADA, GINA, and the ADEA, it is illegal to discriminate in any aspect of employment, including:
hiring and firing;
compensation, assignment, or classification of employees;
transfer, promotion, layoff, or recall;
job advertisements;
recruitment;
testing;
use of company facilities;
training and apprenticeship programs;
fringe benefits;
pay, retirement plans, and disability leave; or
other terms and conditions of employment.

Discriminatory practices under these laws also include:
harassment on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, genetic information, or age;
retaliation against an individual for filing a charge of discrimination, participating in an investigation, or opposing discriminatory practices;
employment decisions based on stereotypes or assumptions about the abilities, traits, or performance of individuals of a certain sex, race, age, religion, or ethnic group, or individuals with disabilities, or based on myths or assumptions about an individual's genetic information; and
denying employment opportunities to a person because of marriage to, or association with, an individual of a particular race, religion, national origin, or an individual with a disability. Title VII also prohibits discrimination because of participation in schools or places of worship associated with a particular racial, ethnic, or religious group.

Which was also not an answer to the question actually asked. You answered a question you liked better. And you are projecting again.

Did you mean the customer's request or the supervisor's request? That was not clear in your post. But it was very clear in Arcade22's and my own posts that it was the supervisor's request that was illegal. I don't recall anyone suggesting it was illegal for the customer to make their request. Only despicable and reprehensible.

This thread is still going? By my count, everything worth saying was said in the first two pages. If didn't get what you wanted then, you're not going to get it now. Why even bother?

"It may have sounded racist but I was only kidding you and the other liberals here to stir you guys up."

I'm not sure that comes off well either.

Thread length is often inversely proportional to what can be usefully discussed. How long is the Thunberg thread now? I haven't had the heart to visit it.

Welcome to the Forum. It appears you've taken over the handle of a previous poster. You should know that this is against the rules.

Mr Giordano sir. Hommes. As I am 4% Jewish according to my DNA test, may I address you as my Hebrew Amigo?

I beg of you to read posts 140, 141, and 143 of Lo this very thread. Please read them carefully. Get assistance if needed.

No matter how dim witted one claims to be, it is rather sledgehammeringly obvious that I am being facetious. I responded directly to you saying I was Devil's Advocating for JoeMorgue's old-man-screaming-at -clouds post. It was strictly for him, not to stir anyone else up. Dear God, I think he even understood that.

I think your zeal to see me in an unfavorable light is clouding your reading comprehension.

No, it was over, then a few of us sidebarred to talking about Olive Gardens food, then JoeMorgue got all mad and thought we thought fast food was more important than racism or something.

Her fans keep putting her up for ridicule.

Do you think someone should risk their livelihood, to prolong a fight with a racist?
People have risked their careers, their physical safety and even their lives to fight the battle against racism. Even when it appeared that they could never succeed. Yet they did succeed in substantial ways. I am forever grateful to them. I hope I have their courage.

But the battle is yet unfinished. And that means the fight with racists must be prolonged. To ignore blatant racism is to encourage it. To confront makes it more clear that it is not acceptable.

So the answer to your question is yes.

I read them initially and now re-read them. Sorry I could not get assistance, but from my own low level comprehension I still can’t buy the “facetious” argument. But as the MA mandates that I can’t assign motivations to posters...

"It was just a prank, bro!"

I think we have a "body of work" case here. It's not like this is a new game.

I like how "Ewww mass produced non-artisan chain restaurant food" is a bigger sin then racism for a lot of people.

I mean, come on, it's Italian food. 99% of the menu is pasta with some sort of sauce. And unlimited breadsticks.

Macaroni Grill got all sophisticated with it. They gave you a sheet and a crayon and you would a) pick a noodle shape (fettucine, spaghetti, elbow macaroni, penne, tortalini, ravioli, etc) and b) pick a sauce (marinara, marinara with meat, creamy marinara (I liked this one), alfredo, etc)

Right there is 32 different dishes you could get!

When you get really high and mighty, order the gnocchi. Now choose your sauce?

Lasagna is a separate option.

Really, what else are you looking for?

Absolutely. If a poster rreplies to a foolish comment by openly stating he is trolling, you can take him at his word. Nothing subtle going on. Especially when it contradicts his position up to that point.

Thanks bro, appreciate your support :)

What I always hated was people who wanted a 'Red Wine" or a "White Wine" and when given the options outright refused to choose one. "Any one" or "You choose for me", some of them could get quite belligerent when asked to choose. But if I picked it for them and they didn't like it, it's my fault.

I can understand that if faced with a list of wines you've never tasted before (or don't remember tasting anyway) you might not know which one to pick, but in that case you probably shouldn't complain if you ask the waiter to pick for you.

(Idea: you could say (even if it isn't true) something like "well, OK, but just so you know, I'm a teetotaler so I've never tasted any of these wines and I have no idea how any of them taste. Do you still want me to choose for you?" You could leave out the part about being a teetotaler I suppose. Another idea is just go with whatever the most expensive one on the menu is.)

That is one way of doing it.

A better way

If the customer is a dude

"Real men drink beer mate. Don't be a light weight. You may be to embarrassing to serve."

A women

"Cool hot chick's drink beer love. Don't be an un-cool hot chick"

But this might be too subtle
