You do know that those are businesses, they only open when they are staffed.....That depends on what they do instead: Do they stay at home? Do they go to the mall? Or to the movies?

Thats why I was seeing a false dichotomy
I do not think Australia has anywhere near enough hospital beds. I think all non-essential operations will be cancelled soon. Just to make a bit of room for these cases. Then maybe convert holiday accommodation into hospitals. Either that or they start welding doors shut like they did in China.
How the reaction will be in other countries in another question of course.
I guess it´s a real dichotomy, which emanates from current WHO protocols, which require only containment measures in before the pandemia is declared and slowing efforts (social isolation) to be implemented only after the pandemia is declared. The authors argue that they should not wait, if a pandemia is very likely, and I agree. Perhaps the protocols will change in the future.
Total 180º turn in media and institutional portrayal of the issue here in Spain. Yesterday it was "carry on as normal, it´s just like the flu and our health system can cope with anything". Today it is the opposite "health care urgency centers beginning to collapse" and "the government is studying harder measures".![]()
I´ve told my kids that they´ll probably be off school next week...
Americans really have no idea how America is viewed by the rest of the world.
Bingo - people are finally waking up. Those numbers the bloke was using are identical to where I've been all week.
You don't think Aussie has enough beds?
Mate, nowhere has enough beds to cope with the potential numbers from this disease. If it isn't managed, it will be utterly catastrophic and a lot of excess deaths will result.
I would imagine Aussie, like NZ, has armed forces bases ready to be used for overflows. I have to say, the lull in infections down this end of the world seems to have been used surprisingly wisely.
I have zero confidence in either of our governments, but doctors aren't stupid and haven't waited for central gov't to pull the finger out.
I would say most countries will treat it pretty seriously. I've said what I think will happen in USA.
Africa will be a nightmare. also large parts of South America.
And India will make them both look pretty clever.
I think a lot of governments have pre-empted the WHO, which makes their reluctance worse.
Let's hope it's not too little, too late.
I saw a news report that a dog in Hongkong has tested positive for Covid19. So now I'm wondering, does this mean that it can spread to other mammals, such as mice and rats? I don't like to think about the further implications if that's the case...
Clearly my expertise doesn't give me any knowledge about whether school closures should have been warranted but wouldn't schools be a good(bad) vehicle for children to get contract the virus and then possibly infect their parents (grandparents) who may fall seriously ill.Quote:
Kentaro Iwata, an infectious-disease specialist at Kobe University who had criticized the government’s response to the coronavirus outbreak on the Diamond Princess, said school closings were not medically warranted.
“I don’t understand this,” Dr. Iwata said. “Primarily, children are not easily infected with coronavirus, and even if they are infected, they don’t easily fall seriously ill.”

Boris Johnson has called emergency coronavirus meeting - for three days time.
Obviously some new meaning of the word 'emergency'
By the way, as a heads-up, there is a massive run on toilet paper here in the shops now. Make sure you have enough to last you a few months.
If you have babies in the house, make sure you have enough supplies for them as well, especially nappies.
I am lucky as my wife has always stocked up on toilet paper, tissue paper and other stuff like that.
I don't get this -- it's always listed as a staple for stocking up in emergencies, but in my opinion I'd rather put my stock in stuff that's more conducive to survival.
Yeah, but let's say you are stuck in your home for a month, and you run out of bogroll....
What are you going to do?
Just in case you have some ideas, that was rhetorical. You don't need to tell me.
But I can confirm that shelves are empty here of toilet roll.
That's funny. I don't remember any movies about last survivors breaking into abandoned supermarkets where that's what they are hoping to find ...
