The bill was for the ED visit, not because they thought he had coronavirus. Public health is still the only lab doing (allowed to do) coronavirus testing.

Of course he had deceptive-advertising-doesn't-cover-much insurance that had been against the law under the ACA until the GOP gutted it.

It could be true but...
The story sounds fishy to me. What medical device company large enough to send employees to China wouldn’t have good insurance benefits?

It is pretty big. The school year is until the end of March, though, but a lot of the graduation ceremonies and entrance exams and other events will also close.

I was wondering if anyone had some expert reactions to this news in Japan.

Some people welcome the news here, and others are saying it is a massive over-reaction, but these are lay people who might only be correct by accident.

I am not responding to you looking for expert reactions but sometimes what seems to be an overreaction is prudent considering the risks.

She also might have sparked an outbreak in Israel, time will tell. But they've had other exposures, there were passengers on the flight that had been exposed in the South Korean church and one person arriving from China that had the viruses.

I think this type of transmittal is inevitable.

These experts warn of something I was suspecting all along. Too much focus on "containment" is actually harmful, because governments are avoiding pushing towards slowing the spread of the virus, with measures such as the closing of schools etc.

No question.

If people aren't going to work or school, the possibility of infecting others is vastly reduced. This is what happened in China.

Whether other countries manage to contain and mitigate it as well as China has, is doubtful.

I suspect in the end the rate will go down because there must have been many unreported cases in Wuhan. I hope so.

What you need to keep in mind is that a 1-2% death rate is a reduction from the outset of the disease.

The death rate in China is running at 3.5%.

It's poor wording. The article was using "containment" to mean focusing on contact tracing, locking down borders and trying to keep it out and not educating people on how to slow/halt the spread. Social distancing and hygiene are what limits the spread and people should be preparing for that. They are not mutually exclusive. China has shown this can reduce R0 below 1.

Social distancing and hygiene are what limits the spread and people should be preparing for that. They are not mutually exclusive. China has shown this can reduce R0 below 1.

That's interesting. I would have thought the two goals were more similar than that. I do think the goal should be slowing things down until those antivirals and vaccines are developed.

I think China's reaction locking people in who may not have food was not helpful.

Iran is going to lash people who spread 'misinformation' rolleyes: ). No wonder their number-of-cases/death don't make sense.

Same thing happened with ebola but the health care system bears some of the blame. You'd think these people understood what proper precautions meant. But they don't.

Time and time again we find yet another health care facility or agency that doesn't understand infection control.

I think this must be the first time new cases outside China were more than new cases inside China. Yikes!
