Just been given this link. It is a good basic summary of what we know.

Emerging data estimate the incubation period to be around 6.4 days, ranging from 2-11 days. This long incubation period means that people can be unaware that they are sick for about a week, and there have been multiple reported cases of people transmitting the virus prior to the onset of symptoms.

Don't they always say 3-5 years?

The path to licensure is a long one. Making the vaccine is relatively easy. But then comes the testing of whether it works in animal models, toxicology testing and then safety testing in humans of which there are 3 phases. All of which has to be done under the scrutiny of the regulator.

So about these new cases, who are the officials saying they were exposed to?

This was something I saw on the news shows on TV and it was in Japanese. Some of this ends up in the English news a bit later on, or quicker if the Guardian’s Justin McCurry is watching the same TV show as me.

I’ll see if I can find some more information when I get home.

Pesticide?

I've actually dealt with this question multiple times at work. I was wondering if it would come up here. :D

The EPA defines a pesticide as "any substance or mixture of substances intended for preventing, destroying, repelling, or mitigating any pest"

The definition of pest is "any insect, rodent, nematode, fungus, weed, or any other form of terrestrial or aquatic plant or animal life or virus, bacteria, or other micro-organism (except viruses, bacteria, or other micro-organisms on or in living man or other living animals)"

This means that a product that kills bacteria or viruses on surfaces is classified and regulated as a pesticide. The "living man" part is actually mildly amusing. A product that kills germs on the skin of living people is regulated by the FDA as a drug, but a product labeled to disinfect the skin of corpses during embalming is a pesticide.
One of our customers once contacted us because their food processing plant was undergoing inspection by the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service. The inspector was throwing a fit because the paperwork for one of our food contact surface sanitizers referred to it as a pesticide, and the inspector was shouting "You can't apply pesticides to food contact surfaces!" I had to explain the EPA definition to the USDA inspector. They're different agencies, but you would expect them to know the regulations relevant to their own work.

When two government ministers in Iran have the virus, along with 15 deaths, and they're only showing 95 cases, I'm thinking they're a couple of thousand light in case total.

The behaviour of the outbreak is totally off the wall - it's obviously been circulating in Iran for weeks, yet hasn't cropped up everywhere, despite the fact that Iran probably ranks outside the top 100 for contact with Chinese.

There's still a piece of the puzzle missing.

First confirmed case in mainland Spain, a woman who visited the north of Italy recently. Hospitals in Spain are starting to test pneumonia patients for the new coronavirus. About time...

Some of my friends are currently skiing in the Dolomites. Not really looking forward to meeting them when they get back...

In terms of tourism, Iran and China are probably not on each other's lists very highly, but in terms of diplomatic links, maybe much more so.

Pure, pure, pure speculation: Government ministers from Iran travelling to China, sampling a bit of prostitution while they are away from home...

Came back with an unexpectedly exotic STD.

So it was an MP who made the “50 dead in Iran” claim originally and he is alleging a government cover-up. A government spokesman in a press conference denying the claim of the cover-up featured the deputy health minister coughing and mopping his brow. That guy later tested positive for the virus. The spokesman must be pretty bloody nervous now along with all the staff the deputy health minister was in contact with over the last couple of weeks.

Good point - it'd be somewhat amusing if it was passed through diplomatic channels.

Economic transactions between Iran and China have been on a ramp since the US imposed sanctions on Iran and secondary sanctions on other countries. They have been scrambling to find replacements for goods. This required a lot of person to person interaction so the situation is not surprising. Iran is going to particularly hard hit. Very sad situation.

Please. I said allow cargo ships in. These would carry all the goods they need. And if they wanted to import stuff by plane then cargo planes that do not carry any passengers would be used. The only downside to what I have said is that tourism is a major industry in Hawaii.

Ditto to all other Pacific Islands.
So what makes you think it couldn't come in on a cargo ship?

Rush says its just a cold that the media are blowing up to hurt trump. I dont even think trump is saying that.
