Cont: The Trump Presidency: Part 19

Until now, Trump could claim that he was just working to get the US out of the Middle East, as promised.
But with the Assassination, he has taken full ownership of the quagmire.

Right wing patriotism is weird and strange. They claim to be with the country, right or wrong...unless there's a Democrat in charge.

They are a cult of the GOP.

Homeless are often dumped onto cities by wealthier ( and often Republican) communities. Greyhound Therapy, City Line Drop offs, putting their halfway houses into the cities, etc. etc.

It’s a standard tactic: push ‘em onto the other side of the table and say their side is a mess.

Yes, even Seattle coughed up some money for oneway bus trips. But that has a minor effect on redistributing the homeless. Look at the data.

Every few months, some city or other tries the "Free One-Way Bus Ticket for Homeless People Plan" to get homeless people out of their cities. It usually lasts right up to the moment that they realize that other cities can give homeless people bus tickets too. In any case, voluntary relocation is rarely useful. Most homeless people are in the geographic area they are in for one reason or another.

Yes. You may recall a time in your history when escaped slaves were overjoyed to be able to make their way to Canada where they were able to live free and improve their lot in life. Blacks became eligible to vote in Canada with the abolition of slavery in 1834.

Women’s suffrage in Canada closely followed the timeline in the US.

Real freedoms do not become such merely because they are written into a document. Real rights and freedoms are evidenced in the way people are permitted to live their lives as equals with minimal government interference. The US was in the forefront of allowing those rights and freedoms but was by no means the only country, prior to 1900 or any other time, where those rights and freedoms were practiced.

ETA We can continue tomorrow no problem. I need to sleep soon anyway.

Slavery legally ended in Canada only about 30 years before the US, but not because there was a moral superiority. Slavery was not economically feasible there for the same reasons it wasn't in the northern or New England states of the US. Additionally, it wasn't Canada that outlawed slavery since there was no "Canada"; it was the British government that outlawed it throughout its colonies with the exception of India.

Yes, black men could vote after 1834 in Canada, but only if they owned taxable freehold property, unlike in the US where no such property restrictions existed. The required value of said property would often change, disenfranchising many who had previously been able to vote.

Catholics were not allowed to
vote or hold any office in Canada until 1829. They could neither buy nor inherit property before 1778 nor practice their religion openly until 1791. Jews were locked out from voting because they would not take the oath of state which had a "Christian faith" clause.

But I do agree that Canada is probably the closest country I can think of that would compare to the US when it comes to early individual rights, opportunity, and socio-economic mobility. But then again, there was no country of Canada until 1867, only a British colony.

Oh yeah, like Trump really represents the country because a minority of low-information voters were conned into electing him.

Besides, what do you have against Iran attacking Trump sites?
Trump does represent your country, he is your duly elected representative. He is not a dictator that led a coup to take over the USA and uses violence and so on to keep in power. It is a matter of taking the rough with the smooth in a representative democracy.

If by attack you mean violence than I don't support terrorism by anyone, and I only support violence in a very few specific circumstances. I may support non violent actions but it would depend on the exact circumstances and the non violent action taken.

Then you're an idiot.

I gave 20 years of blood and sweat to this country in support of the ideals it was founded on. And Trump is consistently taking a dump on top of all of that and telling me that the government gives less than a **** about the ideals it was founded on.

"My country right or wrong" is a quick way to let others make you commit atrocities in their name.

"My country right, if it's wrong I'll try to fix" it is a rationalist's motto.

8 years service and I agree with Hellhound.

The full quote being, of course, "My country, right or wrong; if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."

It's not an appeal to follow your country no matter what, it an appeal to fix **** when it goes wrong instead of abandoning the country. This is why 'patriots' like to omit the 2nd half, they'd have to admit that their country is in the wrong sometimes.

Back in the 1980s, a character named Super-Patriot was introduced in the pages of Captain America, intended to be a contrast with Cap; blind patriotism without moral judgment. In one of his first appearances, he had a line that was something like "My country, right or wrong? What's that supposed to mean? America is always right."

The country I simply happen to live in isn't "my" country. I don't own it and I don't affiliate myself with it.

"Patriotism is a word; and one that generally comes to mean either my country, right or wrong, which is infamous, or my country is always right, which is imbecile.”
Stephen Maturin, Master and Commander (Patrick O'Brian)

LOL. With me it's my country right or wrong, and has been for my family for generations.

The aphorism you and your illiterate ancestors misapply ends “if right, to keep it right; if wrong, to set it right.”

ETA: ninja’d.
And happy to be.

To paraphrase Sherlock.

America is a great country. If we are very lucky we will see become a good one again.

Did any of you lot do your service like Trump? Of course not! Fake veterans the lot of you!

Do you have any idea how much fake bone spurs cost to get installed?

I spend 20 years serving my country, trying to save up enough to buy a pair.

It's a scam I tells you, one big scam by Big Bone Spurs.
