The Trump Presidency: Part 18

You think people don't lie to pollsters? I think the second Trump is out of office we'll see what Republicans really think of him. As it is, I think they've decided "in for a penny, in for a pound" and won't utter a harsh word against him until they've gotten everything they can out of his presidency.

There is no real evidence to contradict the view that Trump actually represents what a large percentage of Republican voters think and feel about the basic principles of democracy and law. The real danger nobody is talking about is that the next guy could be as malicious and evil as Trump, but smarter and more politically adept.

Whatever word you want to use for it — fascism, authoritarianism, pick your poison — the grim reality is that Republicans, both politicians and voters, appear to be all in on this project. It's painful to admit this, but Republicans have flat-out rejected democracy. As a group, they are pushing towards replacing democracy with a system where a powerful minority holds disproportionate and borderline tyrannical control over government and blocks the majority of Americans from having meaningful say over the direction of the country.

Yes, I confused you with Babbylonian. Apologies for that.

No, it is not the same thing, but I don't think you'd disagree that when someone says they consider themselves a Rep/Dem/ Ind the chances are pretty damn high that they are registered as such.

I do not disagree that Dem membership is greater than GOP membership. However, Gallup still shows an increase in GOP membership which was my point.
An increase in GOP affiliation, not membership. Not the same.

So tearing up NAFTA and signing it again is a win? There might be some tweaking on car parts and such, but manufacture will keep moving to Mexico.

Apparently, the Democrats spent that time negotiating to make things better for workers. They succeeded in what is being claimed to be a number of significant ways (that Trump has either not cared about at all or even opposed), and then got things moving forward again with the explicit endorsement of major labor organizations. So hopefully, it will be much, much better for the average American Americans than as the original NAFTA was.

He's pretty much out Foxxed Fox News, as it is.

Christianity Today,a magazine founded by the Rev. B. Graham, wrote an editorial saying it is time for President Trump to be removed and it is time for Christians to acknowledge he is profoundly and grossly immoral.

My favorite line

It's a good sign, but even so...

Let’s grant this to the president: The Democrats have had it out for him from day one, and therefore nearly everything they do is under a cloud of partisan suspicion.

Yes, but the reason people have had it out for him from day one is because he ran on an explicitly racist platform, he mocked a reporter's disability, "grab them by the pussy", and all the other myriad things that strongly indicated he was wholly unfit for public office. Even many supporters have said they thought he was going to start acting presidential once he was in office.

I mean come on, it's not like this impeachment suddenly and shockingly materialised out of a void. It's not like it's even the first thing he should have been impeached for.

And, no, Mr. Trump did not have a serious opportunity to offer his side of the story in the House hearings on impeachment.

Yes, he ******* did! He was invited to testify personally. Instead he refused to testify, prevented everybody he could from testifying, and blocked all subpoenas. He had every opportunity and chose not to participate.

Trump’s evangelical supporters have pointed to his Supreme Court nominees, his defense of religious liberty, and his stewardship of the economy, among other things, as achievements that justify their support of the president. We believe the impeachment hearings have made it absolutely clear, in a way the Mueller investigation did not, that President Trump has abused his authority for personal gain and betrayed his constitutional oath.

In a way, the second sentence is just saying the same thing as the first sentence.

It's also implicit in the first sentence than Kavanaugh is a moral person which, well...

And, as for "defence of religious liberty", once again I see the word "religious" being used to mean "Christian and only Christian" and "religious liberty" being used to mean "liberty to discriminate against other people".

The impeachment hearings have illuminated the president’s moral deficiencies for all to see.

Because there's no possible way anybody could have known beforehand.

Consider how your justification of Mr. Trump influences your witness to your Lord and Savior. Consider what an unbelieving world will say if you continue to brush off Mr. Trump’s immoral words and behavior in the cause of political expediency. If we don’t reverse course now, will anyone take anything we say about justice and righteousness with any seriousness for decades to come? Can we say with a straight face that abortion is a great evil that cannot be tolerated and, with the same straight face, say that the bent and broken character of our nation’s leader doesn’t really matter in the end?

That horse has not only bolted, it's moved to a different continent, fathered 17 children, had a lauded life as a racehorse, retired to an idyllic farm, died peacefully in its sleep surrounded by loved ones, and had its corpse hit with a stick by everybody who's been paying any attention to the Evangelical right.

A far left magazine, or very “progressive,” as some would call it, which has been doing poorly and hasn’t been involved with the Billy Graham family for many years, Christianity Today, knows nothing about reading a perfect transcript of a routine phone call and would rather.....

....have a Radical Left nonbeliever, who wants to take your religion & your guns, than Donald Trump as your President. No President has done more for the Evangelical community, and it’s not even close. You’ll not get anything from those Dems on stage. I won’t be reading ET again!

For someone who isn't at all bothered by impeachment (by his own account) and who is bearing up magnificently (according to an unnamed close aid), he certainly seems to be doing a lot of all caps tweeting about it.

Can I also say that I think it's a bad move to no longer count Wakanda as a trading partner? They're a very advanced nation with a lot to offer the world, and cutting them off from trade seems like a retrograde step.

All guns blazing, eh? I reckon that article has really shaken him. I wonder how it will affect his approval ratings?

Never thought of CT magazine as 'far left'

He'll be calling the bible communist next.

Pro-Trump christians are the only real christians. Just like pro-Trump Americans are the only real Americans. It's not a complicated ideology.

I will be signing our 738 Billion Dollar Defense Spending Bill today. It will include 12 weeks Paid Parental Leave, gives our troops a raise, importantly creates the SPACE FORCE, SOUTHERN BORDER WALL FUNDING, repeals “Cadillac Tax” on Health Plans, raises smocking age to 21! BIG

Trump should lean into it. No more MAGA hats. 2020 is the year of the MAGA smock. More fabric means higher price and more profit! #smocking

There was also the issue of the Trump administration wanting to legislatively add the ability for them to dictate to international auto companies where they were allowed to manufacture cars and parts. I'm not sure how that panned out.

The Trump administration wants to dictate how and where global auto companies make cars and parts to secure duty-free treatment under the new Nafta -- in its most direct intervention yet to manage trade and production, according to people familiar with the effort.

The issue is being discussed between Trump administration officials, congressional staff, and domestic and foreign auto makers in the context of the legislation that lawmakers will vote on for the trade deal to take effect. The White House wants specific language that would allow it to unilaterally administer the production rules for companies.
