I haven't been kidding for the last couple years when I say we are witnessing a full push toward a complete, reality denying level of an anti-intellectualism.

Once you've destroyed the very concept of a fact where else is there to go?

Orwell was right.

Orwell was right.

Yeah he (nor anyone) just never imagined it would come from mass, petty "My ego and fee-fees are hurt that people keep telling me I'm wrong about stuff so I'M LITERALLY GOING TO DESTROY THE VERY CONCEPT OF FACTS" and that some populist mego-maniac's thrust for power would be a secondary effect.

We are very, very close to a post-Truth world.

It's frustrating to me that the death of democracy in the US will be due to sheer pig-headedness and spite.

If you think this is stopping at our borders, think again.

Every country in the world has at least one potential Trump watching is happening to the US right now.

Hence the frustration. The world is watching and taking notes.

That's what's ruined every human collective endeavor ever, why would one iteration of one form of government be immune to the omnipresent flaw in human nature?

This ain't new, people. Humans have a streak of selfish stupidity (or stupid selfishness) and it runs through everything we ever do. Everything comes to ruin eventually, then the next bunch tries again.

I advise everyone to chillax and enjoy the ride. We all always live in interesting times.

That's fine for people like us who have... *groans because of the baggage of the word* privilege to be a position where we can watch something like this and merely be entertained by it.

One of the principles of Stoicism (a philosophy I recommend to everyone) is that one cannot control what happens (except in a limited way on a small scale) but one can control how one reacts to what happens.

Sounds a bit defeatist for my taste.

No offense but that does sort of just rather crudely dismiss the fact that... Trump is actually doing harm to people in an actual legit way that invites something beyond a shrug and a "Well... whatta gonna do?"

The whole straw nihilist "Nothing really matters" is a big factor in how we got Trump and the big defense from many of his defenders, I don't think it's a good plan to use to beat him.

We should care about what's going on, not adopt a "Lookit me care the least about it" attitude.

Calling impeachment unconstitutional just wrecks my brain.

It's seeding the ground for the eventual point where one of the Democrats gets put up against the wall (hopefully metaphorically, perhaps literally) for treason.

And your plan to beat him is what, exactly? Post things on an internet message board? Cast one vote in an election next year? If you're doing nothing else then we're doing exactly the same things and the only difference between us is that you let yourself get upset and stressed over things outside your control. We'll have the same impact on the world.

Silly me. I thought they'd get right to the votes and The PDJT would be impeached by 10 am. Turns out the Republicans are going to spend the day submitting resolutions to bog down the process. Each requires a vote taking 15 minutes.
Maybe they can delay it long enough to get to their "They Impeached him in the middle of the night!" sound bite that they didn't get when adopting the Articles of Impeachment.

I love you man but your "Nothing we do here matters" attitude has always eluded me.

And like I said that's such a core part of the Trumper mentality so often, this raw, core anger at anyone who adopts anything beyond a "Everything is %$#@!ed and nothing we do matters" attitude.

I'm not angry. Quite the reverse. It's kind of the point.

Stoicism when there is stuff to be legit angry about is not a virtue.

And this is coming from someone who is more then willing to take the Dems to task whenever that anger falls back into just neutered "But the orange man is bad!" victim narrative whining or over the top theatrics, so it's not a matter of keeping perspective.

Yep makes it easy to ignore body counts and such.
