Who created al Qaeda?

How many terrorist attacks have been foiled in progress?

How many have been foiled in the planning stage?

How many terrorist attacks post 9/11 have been stopped in their tracks? How many terrorists have been arrested for conspiracy post 9/11? How many terrorist attacks have there been post 9/11?

Are you focusing on terrorism world-wide or the US?

From 1970 through 2017 terrorism of any stripe accounted for 0.01% of deaths in the US, with 9-11 being the exception.

In 2017 alone world wide 26,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen, Syria, and the other usual garden spots.

In the US in 2017 40,100 people were killed in automobile accidents (a number that is going up).

By 2017 the number of foiled terrorist attacks within the US was 97 and should be comfortable over 100 by now.

Rand has a solid write-up on this subject that's great for perspective:

Your point is well taken. Terrorism by the numbers is not a threat to Americans. I suspect the issue is emotional because we expect the authorities to prevent all threats. Terrorism is one while it might be a very small one. I suppose it is similar to being killed as an innocent bystander by gun violence. We want to believe that this can be lessened or eliminated. So people might propose banning guns for example.

9/11 was the mother of all terrorist attacks and it inspired imagination of other large tragedies... collapsing a bridge, for example. And I suppose these sorts of targets then become "hardened" against a terrorist attack. Airlines not have insane security... You can't enter bulldings without a thorough search. This may be deterring terrorists. It's not catching them about to do something nasty.

The fact is that terrorists use low tech approaches and are hard to track and hard to stop such as the bombings in Paris. We've basically beefed up "security" and "rapid response" I suppose. But it's still pretty easy to slip through and kill multiple people if a terrorists wants to. And they seem to want to.

Why?

Obviously there are groups who are "disenfranchised" and have no voice. Whether their grievances are valid or not hardly matters. They apparently terrorize to get attention, to perhaps get people to become aware of their grievances... and to demonstrate that they will not be quiet and be passive in what they believe is injustice.

What are their grievances? Are they trying to destroy other religions? Are they trying to destroy "imperialism"? Do they want "self determination". Isis apparently wanted to form their own state... caliphate... governed by their rather radical fundamentalist Islamist vision. They were anything but democratic. The West is their declared enemy and the West has declared them a brutal terrorist state which should be destroyed.

Wouldn't it be nicer if people and religions could get along and respect the rights of others?

The Soviet Union Created Alqueda .

Who created "terrorists"?

Poverty.
Inequality.
Frustration.
Fear.
Desperation for help from higher up.
Poor education services.
Poor health.
Restricted immigration.
Borders between neighbours.
Borders blocking food sources.
Borders blocking water sources.
Local and international corruption due to food scarcity.
Corruption due to trade restrictions.
Trade restrictions due to fear of inequality.
Inefficient food distribution and 30-50% global food wasted.
Desperation due to inequality.
Desperation due to poverty.

I am not sure there exists solid science to back this up with facts.
At least not for the sort of terrorists we are talking about here. It may be true (truer) for phenomena like insurgencies, certain types of crime etc, like we see in Central America or Palestine.

However, the high-profile terror organizations like Al Qaeda are made up to an important extent of rather well-off, educated men (almost exclusively men!) with means. A number of the 9/11 terrorist had access to universities, to foreign countries, to all sorts of resources. OBL was stinking rich.

I believe that mere egoistic yearning for recognition and fame is as important as, if not more important than, "Inequality" or "Poor education services".

Religion...

You left out Religion.

That was the whole reason for 9/11.

Hugs, men.

I know the new world we're in is scary.

Yes, scary.

There is no final solution, no one cause.

Nobody hates you for doing what you've done to survive.

We should not hate "terrorists" for acting the same way with the support they've sought.

I get it, you're all trying to win in the survival of the fittest, but give me some credit, don't dismiss my whole list of reasons because you thought of one more.

Religion...

You left out Religion.

That was the whole reason for 9/11.

Religion was linked, like all the listed reasons are.

Being a martyr is recognition and fame.

Saudi Arabia is a very wealthy country. Also home to Mecca, so they want to help Mecca's income.

Both of you were too intimidated by my greater effort at compassion (thinking takes energy) to see that I included:

Desperation for help from higher up.

It's OK, though. We're all in this together. Your leaders, your military, all of us.

We all have to learn to see that the world is round, and we are all on the same side.

TL;DR Thanks for the simple mansplanations. :D xx

In what way do you think that the members of Al Qaeda were fighting to survive?

So their family and extended family had enough food, clothing, and shelter to survive.

Instead of having to fight and kill... for what?

What country are your family and ancestors from? Did you or your family ever fight to protect it/them?

Terrorist attacks seem to have a political motive. And certainly the terrorists from the ME seem to have a religious component. Don't they all scream "god is great" or similar? When you have a (irrational) belief in god... it frees you from doing what is lawful, just and so on because you believe you are acting for a higher purpose... doing what god wants. I don't get why god would want innocent people who have done nothing to harm you need to be killed... but that's what they do and why it frightens all people who feel they are targets for random acts of violence and hatred.

State terrorism is a different matter. War which targets and kills or ignores and kills non combatants is a form of terrorism... but it's call collateral damage.

The motive(s) for the 9/11 attacks seems pretty well understood... if you accept that it wasn't a false flag or inside job (nonsense). These motive amount to a series of "indictments" of what the USA had been doing in the ME.... supporting Israel which they see as a usurper and murderer of Palestinians, support despots such as in Egypt.. arming them to oppress their own people, undermining governments such as in Libya.. and of course having a "decadent" anti religious lifestyle... feminism, sex, alcohol, dancing and so on.... and bringing it to the ME, bombing of Beirut... and so on all interference and meddling of the west in the ME. Colonialism was a problem in the 19th century and imperialism... economic and cultural replaced it in the 20th and now the 21st centuries. All of these can motivate people to strike back... and as soldiers know they may die in service to their country... terrorists accept dying for their cause/beliefs. And in fact martyrdom became yet another reason to die for a cause and why so many people of Islamic background will accept and become terrorists.

Terrorism can not win a war in the traditional sense of armies engaging and one winning and the other surrenders. But they can get their message out and they can inflict harm to the societies/cultures they see as oppressors. West hasn't found a successful way to stop "Islamic" terrorism and the West refuses to disengage from the ME. So we're in for more for the foreseeable future.
