The Trump Presidency: Part 18

"It's called rain."

So that's what it's called! I've just been calling it the 'falling wet stuff'. 'Rain' is so much easier. Thanks, Trump!

And this is the man the GOP thinks is so wonderful.:boggled:

Granted, he always gets his weather reports from TV. And I haven't heard a meteorologist use the word "rain" since 1998. It's always "the wet stuff", "precip", or some other euphemism. Maybe it's because they could claim they never said it would rain.

Hey, this theory just got a lot stronger...!

So if the US were sending troops to Cuba, should the headline say we were sending troops to the Caribbean?

If Venezuela broke out in civil war and we sent support troops to Columbia, should the headline say we are sending troops to Venezuela.

No, they should blare out, "TRUMP HAS LOST HIS FREAKIN' MIND!!!"

I'm not sure what headline you're critiquing. Who specified Saudi Arabia for the troops? I'm still not clear on that. Trump might have cited the "fact" solely because that way he could call it fake news.

In looking at a 2017 article I was struck by how few troops were in Saudi compared to Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE. It's out of date, of course. But I think maybe Saudi did not want a high number because a heavy presence would be unpopular internally.

It started with Trump's Tweet:

Donald Trump says story '12,000' troops will deploy to Saudi Arabia is 'fake news' and blasts 'anonymous sources' after unnamed Pentagon officials claimed he's sending either 14,000 or 7,000 to counter Iran
Donald Trump denied Thursday night that he plans to deploy 12,000 uniformed servicemen and women to Saudi Arabia, refuting a specific set of facts that no one in major news media had laid out.

I'd have to hunt back through the thread to follow where that went.

There's another comment in there too.
President Donald Trump said during a Friday roundtable on small business that had he not been elected to office, America’s steel industry would have gone down the tubes. “If I didn’t get elected, you wouldn’t have a steel industry,” the president said. Link

If you know steel production you know that statement is not only false, it's misleading in a way that can do a lot of damage. This is vintage Trump. He strategizes with off-the-top-of-his-head planning and it almost never works. Then he launches a PR effort to try and make it seem he's actually right. He did it in Atlantic City, with the airline, with the football league. When the collapse comes he walks away and pretends none of it ever happened.

What is mind boggling and stomach churning to me is, how quickly and completely the GOP leadership has caved in to this guy. I don't expect them to defy and condemn him, just a little honesty. For McConnell to at least be willing to say something like, "I'm aware of the president's statement but I have some concerns about domestic steel."

The CNN personal-phone story does have a problem: The examples included right after the lede aren't about Trump's personal phone use, but about concerns at Giuliani and Sondland's end of things. Later in the article it does refer to officials claiming Trump still uses a personal phone, but it's thin on specifics. Then CNN cited concerns from last year. It's an oddly structured story IMO. I think CNN knew their story was thin on supporting details - otherwise the beginning wouldn't have focused on Sondland and Giuliani.

A different headline might have been better. "Trump conversations may not have been secure" isn't too sexy, though.

Also the headline lacks attribution - meaning CNN is treating it as a flat-out fact. Which means they may have proof or at least a VERY high level of confidence. But the story itself doesn't treat it that way.

It's a bit more complicated than that. Trump gets issued a cell phone. It's hardened on his end. Sort of, as much as a cell phone can be. But when he uses that phone to make personal calls to people with regular cell phones on the other end it doesn't matter how secure his end is.

It most definitely is about his personal phone use.

When (for example) he calls up legendary butt-dialer Giuliani and chats about their plans to screw over Biden with their Ukraine shenanigans the call is wide open to foreign surveillance. And you can bet that Russia hears every word that passes through Giuliani's phone.

He might as well be using a walkie-talkie. In fact, most modern walkie-talkies would probably be more secure.

There's a reason that his security people don't want him using a cell phone, whether they gave it to him or he got it himself, for any kind of business, personal of otherwise.

It's because they can't control who he calls or what kind of security is on the other end.

In other words, his personal phone use.

Trump didn't like using the hardened landlines in the White House because it meant that there would be an official log of who he talked to, when, and for how long.

One wonders why.

(Actually, no. One doesn't.)

Then the ship slides out from beneath the clouds into the moonlight, and it turns out the silks are all rotted, the spices turned to dust, and half the crew are hideous undead. Oh, and there's a cute zombie monkey.

That's not a nice way to refer to Guilliani!

You're right.

There's nothing cute about him.

Sad but honest prediction;

The next big Katrina/Andrew/Sandy storm that happens, one that does major damage across a wide area, we're probably going to start seeing the "Okay but... does it make sense to fix/rebuilt?" discussion happen on some level.

Our GOP legislature here in NC won't go there because the developers and real estate operators they work for won't let them.

They figure they can still squeeze a decade or so more profit out of coastal properties.

But shouldnt it be trivially easy for the president to give his henchman a phone that could communicate with the POTUS’s phone in an encrypted manner?

No it is not. These guys aren't all that bright - remember Guliani had to go to the Apple store to unlock his phone.

Trump has multiple phones, and he doesn't like the government phones because they can log his calls.

This is "Bat **** crazy old man in a nursing home" level of crazy.

I wonder, I just wonder ... was he taught to let it all accumulate down there during the day and just flush once, late at night?

I too hate taking a shower where you can't get warmed up because it's some crappy water-saving system. And I like a good steak. And I think America should be great.

He may be a little rough around the edges and a bit of a rogue, but he's an intuitive genius!
