The Trump Presidency: Part 18

Once again, Saudi Arabia is conflated with Middle East.

Odd that. The ME is a hotbed of raging, complex, inter-country, inter-denominational, political rivalry that is virtually impossible to sort or understand.

Yet somehow, "the middle east" gets wheeled out as though it was some amorphous blob.

Well, I guess Trump's in the clear, now.

Nope,not at all.
Somebody said Trump was the most racist president in history, when there some in the 19th century who were clearly worse, as bad as Trump is.
Surprised you did not get this.

I'd say there were 20th century Presidents as or more racist than Trump. Wilson, Coolidge, FDR, Reagan, Eisenhower, Nixon even George H.W Bush come to my mind. Trump is maybe more openly racist than these, but if you study the Presidents you discover that these were all privileged white people who grew up ingrained in an American society which was racist. Eisenhower or Teddy Roosevelt are my favorite Republican President of the 20th century.

In fact in many ways, I liked Eisenhower over his successor who is a bit too mythologized for my liking. But I can't ignore that Eisenhower did nothing about civil rights and Jim Crow. Trump is awfully racist, but not really worse than most Republicans.

Depends on how you define racism, really. I find it hard to buy that FDR was a racist.

I notice Donnie lost no time in basically being a PR flack for the Saudi king over the Penescola shootings...

"Throught these gates pass the best damn terrorist in the world"...

Just a question: How many of the people who go to Trump rallies are truly Trump supporters? Tickets are free, it's probably the biggest event in town the night it happens, and it's a chance to be in the same room as a President. I think the election of D. Trump is probably the worst thing that's happened to the U.S. since the JFK assassination, but if Trump spoke at a stadium near me I might go out of sheer curiosity. Discuss.

His wife wasn't. But FDR at the very least, was appeasing the racist Southern Southern Democrats in many of his policies.

And while some of the White American competitors in the 1936 Berlin Olympics received invitations to the White House, Jesse Owens did not. President Roosevelt’s snub of the U.S. four-time gold medal winner came around the same time he was pushing through Congress all of the job benefits in his New Deal, like minimum wage, social security, unemployment insurance, and unionizing rights. Farmers and domestics—southern Blacks’ primary vocations—were excluded from the New Deal and federal relief was locally administered, satisfying southern segregationists. Northern segregationists were also satisfied by the housing discrimination in New Deal initiatives, like coding Black neighborhoods as unsuitable for the new mortgages. As such, Black communities remained buried in the Great Depression long after the 1930s while these New Deal policies (combined with the GI Bill) exploded the size of the White middle class.

Not to mention putting 100,000 Japanese in internment camps.

Sorry I'm still stuck trying to figure out how Saudi Arabia isn't part of the middle east.

I considered it when he was going to be in town, but all the personal information you had to provide in order to get the free tickets went against my privacy concerns.

I'm not strong on presidential history but would you go with "there has never been a POTUS this overtly racist?

Go back to before the Civil War and you'll likely find that most of them were more overtly racist. And most of them for a while after, likely. Racism has been pretty well embedded in US culture for a very, very long time, and has been completely acceptable for so very much of it. It took until around the time of the Civil Rights movement for the country to start meaningfully start to combat it. To be clear, Emancipation was a big deal, but that was anti-slavery and not so much anti-racism. Had Reconstruction not been... murdered, really, with Jackson's abuses of power, there's a decent chance that it would have been confronted much sooner, but Reconstruction was murdered and a whole bunch of states turned to exploiting the prison system to replace the loss of slave labor with slave labor covered with a very thin veneer of legitimacy.

On news slightly related to that, though...

House Democrats pass bill to restore the Voting Rights Act after Supreme Court decision gutted it

We can expect McConnell and the Republicans to be firmly against anything that could curb discrimination against non-whites, of course.

Republicans develop a sudden aversion to cost ... of jailing Republican Duncan Hunter

And further evidence that even to present day Republicans, prison is not so much about a just consequence for wrong-doing as it is something to use against those who don't support them.

To poke something different -

Human rights group reports increase in violence against asylum-seekers forced to wait in Mexico

The organization Human Rights First has released an updated report documenting nearly 640 violent crimes that have been committed against asylum-seekers who have been forced to wait out their cases in Mexico under inhumane and illegal Trump administration policy—nearly double the number the group listed in its October report.

The findings continue to confirm that the Migrant Protection Protocols policy, or Remain in Mexico, is a humanitarian disaster. “There are at least 636 publicly reported cases of kidnapping, rape, torture, assault, and other violent attacks against asylum seekers and migrants returned to Mexico under MPP,” the report said. Nearly 140 kidnappings or attempted kidnappings have horrifically targeted children who have been returned to Mexico with their families.

“A three-year-old boy from Honduras and his parents were kidnapped after DHS returned them to Nuevo Laredo,” the report continued. “The boy’s parents were separated, and the woman reported hearing the kidnappers beat and electrocute her husband. When she last saw him lying on the ground, beaten and bleeding, he told her, ‘Love, they’re going to kill us.’ The woman and her three-year-old son were released but she does not know if her husband is alive.” This terrorism targeting vulnerable families has in part forced some desperate parents to send their kids across the border into the U.S. alone.

There's more, of course, but the really short version is that things are bad - and the Trump Administration is still pointedly working to make them worse while brazenly lying about it.

Trump Tweets

GREAT WORK yesterday by the Senate to support our Historically Black Colleges and Universities! Thank you @BetsyDeVosED, @SenAlexander, and @SenatorTimScott for your leadership...

Trump Tweets

All necessary work has been completed to declare Mexican Cartels terrorist organizations. Statutorily we are ready to do so. However, at the request of a man who I like and respect, and has worked so well with us, President Andres Manuel @LopezObrador_ we....

....will temporarily hold off this designation and step up our joint efforts to deal decisively with these vicious and ever-growing organizations!

Duncan Hunter announced he is resiging his house seat.
Guess he got a good talking to by the GOP leadership.

Sorry I'm still stuck trying to figure out how Saudi Arabia isn't part of the middle east.

Really? You're going with this contrived apology?

How many of those Middle East troops are going to be deployed on Saudi soil?

Edited to add, according to the NYT maybe 200 more of our soldiers will go to the US base in Saudi Arabia with additional military hardware. Hardly makes the headline valid.

No way. I wouldn't be able to disguise my utter and complete disgust. Trump might suggest somebody use a 'Second Amendment' solution on me.

Me too. Let me know when a clue pops up.

So if the US were sending troops to Cuba, should the headline say we were sending troops to the Caribbean?

If Venezuela broke out in civil war and we sent support troops to Columbia, should the headline say we are sending troops to Venezuela.
