The Trump Presidency: Part 18

Except head toady Bill Barr is in line, pushing back on the report.

The shallow state fights back.

From the link:
Barr believes the FBI did not have enough information to begin its investigation of the Trump campaign, and believes the CIA and other U.S. agencies may have information that would change Horowitz’s conclusion....

... Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Barr’s “excellent work has uncovered significant information that the American people will soon be able to read for themselves.” ...

Appeals Court says Deutsche Bank and Capital One must turn over Trump records to House:

https://edition.cnn.com/2019/12/03/...mp-financial-documents-2nd-circuit/index.html

Who would have thought?
Trump was telling the complete truth when he said his lawyers told him not to release these records - since they will be very different from the ones he gave to the IRS; and the people at the IRS will face actual prison time if they let Trump cheat, knowing that there are contradictory records out there.

Why would a little Tax fraud matter? All his other crimes don't, why would that suddenly matter?

I can see Guilani now saying how all rich people cheat on their taxes, and it isn't anything to hold against Trump.

I wonder how involved they were, or even why they would bother. They had to know that this was going to be an eventual loss.

Delay Delay Delay make the other guy run up his bills. That seems to be SOP for Trump, why should he suddenly show long term thinking? Has he ever demonstrated anything like long term thinking on anything?

In this case, the benefit doesn't seem to be "run up the other guy's bills", but more "run out the clock". The more delays, the less chance that any of the information uncovered can be used in any sort of impeachment proceedings.

A little bit of side news:

Does the name Duncan Hunter ring a bell? He was the second congress-critter to endorse Trump for the presidency.

Well, he has just plead guilty to campaign finance violations (misusing funds for personal expenses, including ones involving extramarital affairs). Should be noted that at one point he labeled the investigation a "witch hunt".

So he was the second to endorse Trump.... who was the first? Well, it was Chris Collins, another congress-critter who has since pleaded guilty to charges of insider trading.

https://theweek.com/speedreads/8820...e-operation-house-intelligence-report-reveals

Hmmm.... 2 early Trump supporters, both of them indicted and then plead guilty. Granted, the charges didn't directly involve Trump, but its rather curious that the first republicans to see value in Trump are both convicted criminals.

Since when is that illegal, why if it was Trump would be in trouble for paying off Stormy! Not just his lawyer who did it.

Trump on Adam Schiff today:
I learn nothing from Adam Schiff, I think he’s a maniac. I think Adam Schiff is a deranged human being. I think he grew up with a complex for lots of reasons that are obvious. I think he’s a very sick man, and he lies.

Projecting there much, Donnie?

He projects like that so often that it almost seems like he's always speaking only of himself.

By the way, it's possible for a basically stupid narcissist to *also* have what *he* thinks is a self-deprecating humor streak. I think this streak has confused people into thinking he's even more deranged than he is.

He doesn't even seem to be suffering from increasing dementia to me -- I think most of that can be attributed to how it looks when a mediocre liar is put under a relentless spotlight.

Well, to nitpick a little....

The crime that Duncan Hunter was guilty of was misusing campaign funds (i.e. not using money the way it should have been). This is a different crime than Trump is accused of (his payment to Stormy was an illegal campaign contribution that should have been declared but wasn't).

Both are crimes, but the details around them are different.

Trump covers a few others as well. The campaign funds, charity funds, and the inauguration funds.

Just another thing he's better than most people at doing.

Not just impeachment. Criminal charges in general, like Trump and Barr are trying to do regarding the Trump Organization.

In other things to poke at...

House Intelligence report on the impeachment inquiry is definitive, detailed, and utterly damning

If you want or need a review, it's not a horrible idea to read it.

CNN: IRS whistleblower declines interview with Senate after being warned off by IRS official

Hmm. This is a somewhat interesting case, given the nature of the confidentiality laws in play. Still, I find it distinctly problematic for any whistleblower to be warned not to testify about things that absolutely should not be covered under privacy laws - such as testifying about actions taken to interfere with or prevent people from doing their job properly, especially when it's for the personal benefit of a public servant superior.

I don't think it's that great. It presumes that, now Trump has said how great NATO is, he'll have to support it to avoid political embarrassment. Well, haven't we learned by now that Trump doesn't know or care about what he might have said yesterday: if he thinks it will benefit him to walk out of NATO, he'll do it regardless of what he said a couple of days before..

Trump bashing NATO has been one of the few things he's been (relatively) consistent on. As such, I don't think the value is that he'll actually have to support it now. One valuable aspect is that now there is some uncertainty in the direction of maybe he would stand with NATO sometimes. Even that might be putting it too strongly. It's that the idea is now out there that he could.

The same improbably nigh-impossible deniability that he leverages constantly to let his serfs defend him can work for others too. This is especially important as the value of compromat decreases as it's exposure by outside forces becomes more likely, which could well be the situation he is currently in.

(Note that I didn't read the article so if it makes the argument you're being critical of, I agree that it is faulty reasoning.)

Also one of the few policy areas where I felt he was correct and we should re-evaluate our NATO contributions. Not that I approve of the way he's done this mind you, he's just gone around insulting allies and burning bridges and there has been no discussion about this (to my knowledge) in Congress. Also the point of the problem with the US carrying a disproportionate NATO burden should be to let us devote less of our budget to defense spending. I think the Trumpian/GOP is, if anything, increase defense spending and orchestrate stunningly profitable weapons sales to all manner of unsavory highest bidders.
