Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

No she would have caused 4 flights across the atlantic between her and her dad rather than 6 and while I have put up with it without much mention, I would ask you how pointing this out is showing hatred.

Though I realise the word is easy for you to say without evidence as a a type of writing off other peoples opinions

She caused zero flights across the ocean.

When you continually lie about someone to put them in a bad light it goes beyond dislike. That you are an adult and your target is a child also adds to my decision to use the word "hatred" when referring to your actions.

All good

Beg for a ride and get congratulated for getting to a place where everyone agrees with you.

Maybe try not to destroy the planet so much this time, for no reason doing it.

"Beg for a ride?" Is hailing a taxi, or Uber, "begging?"

You have an imperfect, if amusing, grasp of the English language.

As Steve says:

It's possible, I suppose. Until she spoke at the UN conference I'm sure nobody there had heard that her childhood had been stolen.

Here's what I'm thinking is going to happen...

Thunberg is going to accept a "last minute" offer of a lift from Jane Fonda on her private jet. Since the flight is going anyway and will have upwards of 20 vacant seats why not take advantage of those empty seats fot the entourage. It's not like Thunberg caused the flight to happen, it's totally out of her control.

Meanwhile...

Due to the emissions from the flight, 3 square feet of arctic ice will melt.
The Chinese will say...YAY the new shipping route to Europe is getting clearer.
The Europeans will say...YAY our stuff from China gets here 20% faster
The polar bears will say ****... and drown.

Why are some posters still ignoring the fact pointed out upthread that flying an “extra” person on an airplane with an empty seat still produces a significant carbon footprint because of the extra weight? In fact airlines go to extremes to save weight to save fuel.

I’ve realized that the right wing sneering directed at Thunberg has gone a long way toward increasing her visibility and establishing her as a spokesperson. Way to go guys!

In fairness, when you hail a taxi you are offering to pay for a service. Thunberg, if I understand correctly, didn't pay for the Prince's yacht or crew. And instead of working out her Atlantic crossing dilemma in a few minutes (actually her father's job), she's hanging around waiting for another freebie.

I actually mentioned the decreased fuel efficiency before you did. The argument is still 'lowest footprint feasible', not 'refuse to fly and cause others to take yet more flights'

Her best bet now is likely to hop on a plane and pay for double carbon offsets, for example.

That very well may be true. We'll know in a year of two whether her increased visibility has had any real world consequences WRT to increasing/decreasing atmospheric CO2 levels.

You provide no evidence for that. Did they pay? Did they offer to pay? Did the Prince contact her and not the other way around?

Is she waiting for another freebie? Or is she waiting for a zero to near zero option that she is willing to pay for?

We are ignoring natural climate solutions.

Here is a short film with George Monbiot and me, by Tom Mustill, about restoring and rewilding nature to help repair the broken climate.

Virtually every reporting says the Prince donated the use of his yacht. I am not going to waste bandwidth arguing about what 'donated' means.

Is she waiting for another freebie? Or is she waiting for a zero to near zero option that she is willing to pay for?

Query the first: how long does it really take to figure out?

Query the second: these guys planned on trans Atlantic crossings and...what? Forgot to work out how they would travel?

I think it's more likely they are hoping for another Coke-commercial feel-good offer.

video said:
....But we can still fix you can still fix this. To survive we need to stop burning fossil fuels but this alone will not be enough".

.....but only if we also leave fossil fuels in the ground.

Exactly what I've been saying all along only to be met with a course of "but muh lifestyle...."

I think we now know who the real right wing, climate science denying "skeptics" really are.

Your hatred is shining through.
Okay now stop. All of you. Stop with the extreme exaggerations of other peoples' positions. It is not the case that everybody either hates her with a burning passion or they love and adore her and think she's perfect in every way. There's a word for that kind of hyperbole in argumentation, and that's strawman. You're all experienced enough skeptics to not use such simple fallacies, so why am I now seeing this from both sides?

Give it a rest.

Whatever you're smokin', I want some! They were headed to Chile for the climate summit in Santiago. Once they were already over here the summit got moved to Spain. She is on the wrong side of the world because of a venue snafu.

It actually is hard when it comes to keeping the planet clean. Wouldn't it be nice if she could just pay for a zero carbon ride back across? Unfortunately our system is set up to burn fuel, the more the better.

Care to name names?

The thing the anti-Greta side forgets is that leaders make mistakes, they are part of the job. Followers are the ones who don't make mistakes because they have been shown the correct way of doing things by the leaders. So, yes, Greta makes mistakes but she is still far better than her detractors. She's out there doing something about it.

...which changes nothing. She still had to get back to her side of the world sooner or later, right? What was her plan (or rather, her father's) to get back across the OMO? She is not flipping shipwrecked. She is where she planned to be. While the departure date changed, she always had to get back. Why does she claim now to have no idea how to do so?

Agreed. It takes careful planning do do so responsibly. That's why if you refuse to fly, you should work your logistics our carefully when you make plans to hop back and forth across the ocean. This little logistical detail obviously got by the Thunbergs. Somehow. It would have been pretty high on my planning itinerary.

Put that in yer pipe and smoke it :D

Flying produces 3% of greenhouse gasses. Not good, but not catastrophic. In addition airlines are working on biofuels. Again not perfect, but better than fossil fuels. NASA is working on battery powered aircraft.

But keep on taking potshots at Greta. It’s amusing to me. Meanwhile Trump and other denying world leaders wreck havoc.

Yes, any advances in alternative fuels and technologies are music to my ears, and I mean that. Trump, Morrison, and the other deniers can go suck on a rolling coal tailpipe.

But I am not taking shots at the Thunbergs. Not really. I am taking shots at their cheerleaders, who put blinders on to diefy her.

She had to get back across the Atlantic, and knew this from the outset of her trip. Now she claims to be stranded. No, she is not. Her departure date got moved up, but the logistics of travelling on not-an-airplane have not changed. But the pom pom squad just can't see how inane this is.

She is not stranded. She and Daddy Thunberg simply planned incompetently.
