To be fair I think the amusement factor has long since run out of these threads, replaced by a grim hope that the nightmare will end soon. Once upon a time there was the hope that the cabinet/White House staff would act as a break on Trump's excesses, that the GOP in Congress would rein him in, that he would pivot to be more Presidential, that surely all the scandals would drive him from office and besides how much damage could he really do? Here we are three years on from his election with children in cages, opponents referred to as traitors, allies betrayed while Trump cozies up to dictators and the unwritten rules on the conduct of politics in Washington cast aside one by one to help protect a corrupt President from the consequences of his actions.

I grew up there, and still have a little homestead in a rural area - I'm talking 100 people in a 10 mile radius - so I get back to there and Oklahoma City quite a bit. And honestly I've seen more "MAGA crap" visiting my kids at U of Oregon or Minnesota and here in Las Vegas.
Plus you can buy weed and walk around topless in public now so there's that.

The worst part of this is, in my opinion, we now have a large group of American citizens who back someone they KNOW is no good but they don't care. Trump HASN'T revived coal mining, he HASN'T brought blue-collar manufacturing jobs back to the USA, he HASN'T unveiled a healthcare system that "covers everybody and is cheaper than Obamacare," he HASN'T crafted a tax plan that favors working-class taxpayers, he HASN'T slowed illegal immigration, he HASN'T even even built the wall. But they don't care because rooting for him feels so good!
I just read a long article about Brexit, where you have the spectacle of working-class people voting for something that they pretty much know isn't going to work very well, at least not for them, but they don't care. Because voting for it feels so good!
Never thought I'd look back at the Cold War era as the good old days.

It's hit and miss in rural America on this stuff.
U of O in Eugene is about as much of mixed bag as one can get. It's a liberal college set in the middle of loggers and farmers. Go in any direction away from Eugene and you see lots of OreGUNian emblazoned over an automatic assault rifle stickers on the backs of pickup trucks and sometimes minivans.

I guess you have to take the long view. As Obama has said, we've gone through periods like this before. I recently read about the beginnings of the labor movement in New York City, back around 1900. Employees at clothing manufacturers picketing their employer for a reduction in hours and a living wage. A large segment of the public was vehemently against them, considered them foreign-influenced socialists trying to subvert capitalist society. The New York City police would arrive and be cheered on as they clubbed the picketers and dragged them away. Most of the people being beaten up were women, a lot of them were teenaged, but a sizeable segment of the public didn't care. Those picketing were violating the rights of the property owner and reading news stories about them getting their heads busted felt so good!
But make no mistake, it will take a lot of years to undo the damage Trump has already done.

What's remarkable is that the article makes it seem like a mystery why Trump is anti-Ukraine when the answer is so obvious: Manafort and his former boss Viktor Yanukovych. Putin wants his stooge back on his golden throne. (Yanukovych's former presidential palace is now a museum dedicated to showing how bad corruption in politics can be, complete with, yes, golden toilets.)
There's a fascinating and very disturbing documentary about the revolution in 2014 which removed him from office called Winter on Fire. (Particularly disturbing for me as some of the musicians with whom I work were in Maidan Square.)
Oh, and Trump's "they've always been a part of Russia" quote demonstrates the depth of his ignorance. Especially given the millions that were slaughtered when they were a part of the USSR. Ukranian history is deep and long, and most certainly NOT always a part of Russia, though frequently antagonized by them.
