Stassen is an interesting character. I still like to promote the idea that he will run again for president even though he is dead. Early in his career he was a serious politician. But the last time he ran nobody cared anymore and he looked like a lizard with a toupee on.

Stassen ran for president in 1944, 48, 52, 64, 68, 80, 88, and 92.

Rather than painting with such a broad brush, can it be that in spite of disagreeing with Bolton’s world view across the board, he can still be “principled”? I’ve seen this before in people I disagree with where I can respect their consistency. And, conversely, people I agree with acting in disappointingly hypocritical ways.
 
Bolton's interests in this are pretty clear: he expected to be the Spider in the Web of National Intelligence, steering Trump's policies the way he sees fit.
So a shadow operation under the control of Rudi could not be tolerated.

Stepping back even further from your point (which I agree with for the record) I think people too often start to think that all "bad" people are the same kind of bad.

The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend; but by the same transitive property my two enemies are not necessarily friends.

The Ferengi at least have a code. They'll sell you their own mother, but at least they'll get a good price for her. Trump will sell you his own mother on a discount.
