6. There should be a proportional election system. The percentage of the vote a party gets determines the amount of seats they get in congress - you know, like in a proper Democracy. You can still elect your senators directly if you want, but you need to do away with that "one senator per state" deal, as it's completely undemocratic. Assign an amount of senators per state based on the population.
 
And the parliamentary system of Government is just as prone to a head of state who abuses his powers as ours.

Maybe you should start thinking about the fact that your (flawed) Democracy isn't the model of the Western world you thought it was? Hell, if I wasn't worried sick about what Trump is doing to the world and actually didn't like the US and the good things it has done for the world I might even get an enormous amount of schadenfreude from this whole situation.

They should have taught us in school how flimsy US democracy is, how it depends on the honor system, and that a feckless Senate is all that a banana republican needs.
 
We really can't separate the Trump Presidency from the fact that nobody is keeping him in check.

How could a president put any permanent limits in place? If he did it by executive order, it could be rescinded by the next president. Laws passed by Congress can be repealed. Even amendments can be undone, though unlikely.

This was sent to me by my BIL, who very much tends right. As a former history teacher, I was appalled by it. It's a right wing video about how the 'lefties' have turned US history classes into left wing propaganda machines. It seems that we're being unpatriotic if we don't teach a sanitized Disney version. How dare we teach the actual truth? As I told him, history is history with its good, bad and ugly. As the saying goes, he who does not learn from history is bound to repeat it. But we can't learn from it if we don't know it.

Send him a copy of Howard Zin's A People’s History of the United States. I believe he includes a chapter on how unprepared US students are for history classes when they reach college because they've only been taught the fairy tale version.
