Greta Thunberg - brave campaigner or deeply disturbed?

Pro-Brexit cockwomble Aaron banks claims "bants" for referring to the potential of Thunberg suffering a "freak yachting accident."

BBC News: Greta Thunberg - Caroline Lucas reports Arron Banks to Twitter

"Green Party MP Caroline Lucas has complained to Twitter over a tweet by Brexit campaigner Arron Banks aimed at climate change activist Greta Thunberg.

On Wednesday, Mr Banks referred to Ms Thunberg's sea voyage across the Atlantic and tweeted: "Freak yachting accidents do happen in August..."

Ms Thunberg, who chooses not to fly, is sailing from the UK to attend UN climate summits in New York and Chile.

Ms Lucas said she reported his comment, while Mr Banks said it was a joke."

It's odd how the right defend punching down like this as "banter" yet get really upset at people kneeling in front of a flag.

Wut? This thread is about Greta Thunberg, not your imagination.

To be fair, he's kinda got a point.

Germany has backed away hard from nuclear power in recent years. But they still have 83 million people and a $4 trillion economy that need energy. That's going to have to come from somewhere.

You'd think that a smart kid like Thunberg, who preaches a gospel of rationality, would have given some thought to this.

https://www.theguardian.com/environ...g-climate-change-fight-germany-hambach-forest

Greta Thunberg started her long journey to climate summits in the Americas by joining a treetop protest in Germany’s Hambach forest, where environmentalists have been fighting for years to stop the ancient woodland being torn up for open-cast coal mining.

The battle to save the last remaining oak and hornbeam trees reflects the young activist’s entwined fights to protect the natural world from human exploitation and to halt carbon emissions.

That poor coal seam, being exploited by humans! It's like we're literally raping the planet!

I don't know why you are mocking her for making a valid point.

That open cast coal mining associated with deforestation is hugely damaging to the environment and has the carbon footprint of losing the trees as well as the fossil fuels?

His defense is that he finds the death of a 16 year old girl funny. Yeah, I'm not sure that's better. Twitter should deplatform him.

Actually, Newsthump put it better:

https://newsthump.com/2019/08/15/jo...-fit-when-people-made-jokes-about-milkshakes/

Ardent leavers have rallied around Arron Banks, who is being criticised for joking that Greta Thurnberg would die while crossing the Atlantic, highlighting that many brexiteers still live under the threat of being doused by dairy products.

Simon Williams, a passionate Eurosceptic who struggles with contracted verb forms, was one of many who highlighted the hypocrisy and dual standards he claimed was rife among the ‘globalist elites.’

He explained, “Everybody is claiming to be horrified just because a dodgy millionaire has made jokes regarding the death by drowning of an autistic teenage girl. But where was their outrage when people made jokes about Nigel Farage being shown milkshakes? Where were their angry tweets when people were making jokes about Tommy Robinson’s imprisonment?

No, you're right. Thanks for the correction. That is a valid point.

However, given that Germany has a population and an economy with very real and very significant energy needs today, and given that Germany has foolishly backed away from nuclear power to meet these needs, I think that Thunberg's protest ignores the complexity of the problem. It's simplistic and emotional.

The Hambach Forest is already down to a tenth of its original size, it is with the villages around it damned to non-existence by contracts done decades ago. The fight over it is completely symbolic (ruined already as a self-sufficiant organism) and if the energy cartel gets its way it would be a victim to a policy that has long outlived its rationality. Here's a video of what you don't have to be a religious person to feel sad about - call it emotional if you will, I call it senseless:

The problem isn't actually complicated. It's a simple predicament. Not a complex problem with a complex solution, but an intolerable situation that cannot be made tolerable.

Don't dig up the forest, and you have a looming energy crisis. Dig up the forest, dig up the coal, burn it, and in a few decades at most, you'll have a looming energy crisis, no coal, no forest, the same (if not higher) population, and an even more altered atmosphere driving even more refugees toward your borders.

If you find yourself in prison with a thirty-year sentence, it's not a complex problem. While you can fantasize about it being so, dreaming up elaborate schemes for escaping or hiring elite legal teams to re-appeal your case, it's actually a predicament rather than a problem, and what you're actually going to do is adjust to living in prison for a long time. And a lot of that adjustment will be emotional.

Like that prisoner, what we're actually going to do (after burning the coal anyhow) is live with the future we've made for ourselves. Which means, making do with a lot less.

That's what Thunberg is doing. Kind of. She's doing a gesture of it, and an expensive gadget-heavy darling-of-the-elite-class version of that gesture to boot. But it's a gesture that no one else of note has managed to make at all. It never occurred to Al Gore or any of the Palermo "conference" attendees that reducing their own consumption might help make their case for persuading everyone poorer than them to reduce ours.

I don't personally care what you believe about global warming; feel free to be as tragically wrong as you please. It's the sarcastic denigration of someone who is simply doing all she can to make the world a better place despite a very real fear that she will fail that speaks of petty, thoughtless hatred.

Dave

What are you on about? You don't know what my beliefs on climate change are.

Calling someone a 'hater' just because they do not agree with you is incredibly childish.

If someone decides to take a flight to the USA rather than a boat, I promise you, that does not qualify them as a 'hater'.

He is a horrible disgusting character. It is good that his views are the polar opposite of mine. Why would anyone worry that some creep holds a different view from yours?

That poor coal seam, being exploited by humans! It's like we're literally raping the planet!

My thoughts exactly. Bear in mind Sweden became the world's biggest super-power in C16 - C17 because it used up to 500 oak trees per ship and discovered that by covering the wood in naturally occurring tar, this made their fleet especially sea-worthy. The tar came from taxation of the 'peasants' who paid taxes in the form of barrels of grain, meat or tar.

It is thanks to this history that Greta's wealthy parents are able to buy her a multi-million pound yacht to enable her to sail to the USA from England over two weeks complete with crew to work the wind power.

I love Greta to bits and support her message but you have to be naive if you believe she doesn't have a huge PR campaign behind her in the form of pushy parents.

ETA:Correction, they will have chartered the yacht, as is the norm.

If they do it while taking a side swipe at Greta Thunberg, they do qualify as a hater.

That is very silly. It smacks of forcing people to agree with you when their views may be just as valid as yours.

No, it's not silly, and it has nothing to do with forcing anyone to agree with anyone. It's like you didn't even read the post you replied to.

Again, it's like you don't even read what you are replying to. Do you not understand what the complaint is regarding the cockwomble's tweet?

Thanks for the off-topic history lesson.

No, it's not, because Greta's parents never bought her a multi-million pound yacht.

Prove it. Time to put up or shut the **** up, at long last.

Oh dear, and what are they supposed to do, hide in a corner and cry because little Johnny called them a 'hater'?

Are you unfamiliar with human communication? I ask because you seem to be having a completely different conversation than the rest of us.

No, they aren't supposed to hide in a corner. They are supposed to not take a swipe at Greta Thunberg, or else they will be rightly called out as haters. This isn't rocket science. Apply some thought and I'm sure you'll get it.
