He explicitly equates the country and the flag with himself.
That is tin-hat despot speech.

Trump Tweets

Kevin McCarthy @GOPLeader, “The President’s Tweets were not Racist. The controversy over the tweets is ALL POLITICS. I will vote against this resolution.”

Thank you Kevin!

No they weren't racist, not at all. He just hates them because they are non-subservient women. Who happen to be brown.

Interesting, isn't it, how none of his supporters on the forum have visited the thread since this broke?

Reminds me of the movie Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, which takes place back in the 30s. The protagonists end up at a political rally for a politician who is actually a member of the KKK. The politician tries to both deny he is a member, but also suggest that he is a member, using some doublespeak.

"I belong to a secret society, I don't think I need to mention which one. And these miscreants trampled all over our venerated rituals."

"They vandalized a fiery cross!!!!"

Given their rhetoric? Yup. The airs that they put on to delude themselves have been quite effective, quite honestly, at least for self-delusion purposes about the group that they're loyal to, and, well, if you tell people something confidently, people will tend to believe you if they're not well acquainted with the topic. For that matter, a whole bunch of Republicans don't believe that they're racist, at last check, with varying amounts of truth to their belief and much of the force of the right-wing propaganda machine feeding them a large range of alternative explanations for why a whole lot of them are being called racist, what racist actually means (and why it's the Democrats who are actually racists, not them), and who's being most affected by the racism that actually does exist.

Either way, I've heard similar BS lines, redefinitions, and justifications from quite a few of them. I admit to being initially swayed by some of it - until I had reason to verify the accuracy properly and found quite a bit of it to be a steaming pile of manure, supported largely by entirely tangential truths to what they're actually arguing.

It must be getting harder to claim this though.

Sentiments which will be conveniently forgotten in the next few days when they will return to giving President Trump their complete support......

True, the Republican politicians are very good at making noises condemning Trump, but not when it comes to anything that has an effect.

Yep. It's not like he's pulled the mask off, because I don't think he's ever hidden anything, but now maybe he has finally pulled the hood on.

Well put

I'm not sure there's outrage beyond the Washington and media bubbles - except among minorities but, by definition, they are in the minority and so carry less weight.

I think if you polled white people in the US, the majority wouldn't consider President Trump's comments to be a racist attack. Instead they would view it as a rightfully irritated man speaking his mind with respect to a group of women who are unpatriotic (and quite possibly represent a communist and/or Muslim fifth column).

Yes, the political elite and "right-on" media types might be up in arms, but Joe and Jane Sixpack don't really see what all the fuss is about. :(

Exactly if you view the statements as racist you are pointing out that they happily voted for a racist as these statements are really not that different from past statements from Trump. And if you say that you are never going to win over the white voters. So clearly these statements can't be racist, if they are that would mean there is a huge amount of racism in white america and we simply can not say that. No proper american would vote for a racist president so trump simply can't be racist as that would be saying that 40% of the country is comfortable voting for a racist.

This is all so weird to me.

I actually might have been giving Trump too much credit.

Again I've always just conceptualized Trump as a pure troll. My original view of him was that he wasn't racist in any traditional sense, he just knew racially twinged talk "got the lubruls all worked up and stuff" so he just used the language to get a reaction, not as a dogwhistle per se, although it still functioned as one a lot of the time.

I find this odd. I've known him to be a white supremacist, in the traditional sense, since the "Central Park 5" incident, and a white nationalist, in the traditional "my white immigrant wife is more American than nonwhite people whose families have been here for centuries if not millennia" sense since he took up Birtherism.

*shrug* When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.

So that's why I always figured he'd stay "in the margins" basically being the political version of "I'm not touching you, can't get mad... I'm not touching you, can't get mad" and would never actually just outright be racist in some literal, undeniable sense.

No, he's been there the entire time. That's why I haven't been surprised by any of this - not his concentration camps, not his fondness for police brutality, and not his "go back where you came from" talk. It was always front and center, his first and foremost campaign promise to the people, the exact same play that wealthy white people have used to soothe poor white people throughout US history. "Hey, you may be poor, but at least you're white, like we rich people are." The only surprise is how easily the rest of the GOP's elected officials forfeited their claim to be the "party of Lincoln", in order to become the "party of Taney", or perhaps the "Party of Tillman".

Hey, I'm sure Susan Collins has concerns....
Oh, she does...

“I disagree strongly with many of the views and comments of some of the far-left members of the House Democratic Caucus — especially when it comes to their views on socialism, their anti-Semitic rhetoric, and their negative comments about law enforcement — but the President’s tweet that some Members of Congress should go back to the ‘places from which they came’ was way over the line, and he should take that down"
- Susan Collins

So, she turns half her comments/concerns into an attack on the Democrats in question.

Some responses:

You should be able to condemn racism without a caveat
- Rep. Joe Kenedy

I’m just spitballing here, but maybe don’t use half of your statement to condemn the victims of racism rather than the racist
- Rep. Seth Moulton

Trump Tweets

The Democrat Congresswomen have been spewing some of the most vile, hateful, and disgusting things ever said by a politician in the House or Senate, & yet they get a free pass and a big embrace from the Democrat Party. Horrible anti-Israel, anti-USA, pro-terrorist & public.....

.....shouting of the F...word, among many other terrible things, and the petrified Dems run for the hills. Why isn’t the House voting to rebuke the filthy and hate laced things they have said? Because they are the Radical Left, and the Democrats are afraid to take them on. Sad!

Not the F word! Jesus, we really are living in the end times.

There are times when the F word is quite useful...

Speaking with Tim Alberta, who published their conversations in his book on the Trump administration “American Carnage,” former RNC Chairman Michael Steele explained he had no respect left for religious leaders that were willing to look the other way when it came to Trump’s misdeeds in the past and present.

“These are the people who spent the last forty years telling everyone how to live, who to love, what to think about morality,” he said. “And then this ************ comes along defiling the White House and disrespecting God’s children at every turn, but it’s cool, because he gave them two Supreme Court justices. They got their thirty pieces of silver.”

Political questions like "Is s it conceivable for people who aren't white to be considered US citizens?" Dolt 45 thinks it isn't, much like Vice President Calhoun.

This might have a greater impact in terms of the perceived racism of this administration:

William Barr won't pursue the case against NYPD officers for the death of Eric Garner.

It probably shouldn't, to be honest. While Garner was plainly attacked and killed by an NYPD officer for the crime of standing around outside (note that he was *not* selling loose cigarettes that day - and even if he were, this was not and is not an arrestable offense), it's extremely difficult to charge this sort of case at the federal level.

His supporters are busy peddling their own [barely covert] racism and sexism in other threads.

I was mocking Trump's dramatic tweet! I love the ******* F word.

Would that make Ivanka Bloody Mary? I can't see her as Elizabeth.

Genetic lines got mixed up a bit in the spiritual transmigration. Jared Kushner is actually Henry Fitzroy, and Ivanka is Elizabeth Blount. Or maybe Lady Hertford, Duchess of Somerset. Finally, Tiffany is Lady Jane Grey.

Henry VIII did a lot of good for England - at least in hindsight and in the long run.

Yes, but he beheaded people for disagreeing with him and was known for switching alliances on a dime and frequently ranting about loyalty. He also enjoyed the 1500s version of KFC and Big Macs. I don't know what his hair was like. Maybe the hair reincarnated from someplace else.
