The Trump Presidency 14

Exactly.

Trump left with the message that he wasn't going to have anything to to with them.

Why should Pelosi expect any of Trump's staff to gainsay him? Were they going to tell her, "Oh, you can't take what he says seriously. We'll just carry on like he never said anything."?

Wait a sec. That does sound like something Conway might say.

As usual, his Look-At-Me shenanigans are masking the stuff he has Dastardly and Muttley doing in the background.

The end-around Congress move (phoned in from the grave by Tricky Dicky Nixon, one reckons) to loot the Pentagon was the harbinger of things to come. He's tried it on arms to FBPWO(friendly brown people with oil) and will get blocked long enough in the courts to give us a lot more entertainment than the original notice has provided. His move to hand plenipotentiary powers to his Minister of Trump Defense, Barr is at least true to his word; he's totally like transparent and stuff!

Barr, in a speech this week to a bunch of lawyers in Philadelphia, once-again(for this administration) crossed the line that's supposed to separate the Executive fand Judicial branches. He's lamenting that blocks thrown up by lawsuits are getting no further than district or local Appeals Courts because the Supreme Court they bought and paid for is not taking up the cases that they've lost, or to be more precise, "on which they've been ruled against".

He's gotten nothing done in Congress because he has no program; not for immigration, not for healthcare, not for infrastructure, not for nuttin'. But by individual fiat, he's done not necessarily irreversible but nonetheless serious damage to the country.

Yes he is.
Very law he sponsored got shot down in the courts. He has no charisma.
Only Evangelicals really support him, which is not the same as Trump's base. He would not be able to bring out the vote.
Also, he can't play the media like Trump and would get nailed down for the stupid things he says and does.
And literally no one in Washington likes him - McConnell would try to get rid of him after he signed every possible pardon.

First of all, I don't think he's insane. Second, it's hard to tell about effectiveness since as VP he doesn't do much. As President he would have more clout, charisma or not.

yes, but we can draw conclusions form his time as Governor - and he was completely ineffective, and only interested in pushing his Evangelical agenda.
Multiple people who know him have said that he is convinced that God wants him to be President; he assumes that God will make everything perfect once he is in charge - or just start the Rapture.
You think Pence can credibly threaten to have someone primaried if they don't support him?
Pence has no chances to get his way in office - it will entirely depend on his staff whether anything happens during the rest of his theoretical term.

Also, a President who is at least a little competent is much better in a crisis than one who will tell everyone to ignore the crisis, even if they are the bigger scumbag.

Great progress being made in our Trade Negotiations with Japan. Agriculture and beef heavily in play. Much will wait until after their July elections where I anticipate big numbers!

Great fun and meeting with Prime Minister @AbeShinzo. Numerous Japanese officials told me that the Democrats would rather see the United States fail than see me or the Republican Party succeed - Death Wish!

Japanese officials would not be so rude as to opinionate on US internal politics to the "honoured" leader of that country while he was visiting in Japan. So this is a crock of crap again from Trump.

Yeah, absent an actual Japanese official coming out and saying he/she is opposed Democrats, this falls into the Trump presumption of dishonesty.

Is Abe under any threat in the coming elections? And doesn't he have pretty much a free hand, right now? Why would the big progress depend on an election in two months?

Not saying it ain't so but it sounds like a hand-wave from the Japanese. "Here, we gave you pomp and circumstance, now go home like a good puppy."

I see it as either outright dishonesty or possibly the president being delusional as the result of severe mental illness combined with ignorance of every facet of Japanese protocols.

If President Trump were to say “well, I am ready to negotiate but I may have a hard time concentrating because the Democrats are trying to destroy me which of course would destroy the country because I am the greatest president ever,” then surely the Japanese would say to themselves, our centuries-old culture, our countries’ history, our understanding of how whack-a-doodle you are, and our fear of the incredible power that you wield prevent us from pointing out that you are a dishonest, dishonorable, self-centered twit, so we will politely bow and try to appear respectful as we gesture toward the meeting room. Of course, if that hypothetical were accurate, then President Trump would conclude that they agree with his assessment 100% and he would conclude that he was accurately summarizing their position when asserted that numerous Japanese officials told him that the Democrats are trying to destroy the US.

The Great Patriots of Rolling Thunder WILL be coming back to Washington, D.C. next year, & hopefully for many years to come. It is where they want to be, & where they should be. Have a wonderful time today. Thank you to our great men & women of the Pentagon for working it out!

SGT Artie Muller (USA Ret), Executive Director of Rolling Thunder as asked about this tweet live on CSPAN 10 min ago and says the org has not heard of this and has no plans to ever come back to DC after this year.

In addition to great incompetence and corruption, The Smollett case in Chicago is also about a Hate Crime. Remember, “MAGA COUNTRY DID IT!” That turned out to be a total lie, had nothing to do with “MAGA COUNTRY.” Serious stuff, and not even an apology to millions of people!

Great morning of golf with Prime Minister @AbeShinzo at Mobara Country Club in Chiba, Japan!

Tonight in Tokyo, Japan at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan Stadium, it was my great honor to present the first-ever U.S. President’s Cup to Sumo Grand Champion Asanoyama. Congratulations! A great time had by all, thank you @AbeShinzo!!

I think The PDJT is badly in need of a thesaurus.

While Trump maintaining power and becoming the world's least competent dictator is the worst of the bad ends, there's a not-much-better alternative I've been mulling over in quiet moments. Suppose Trump is ousted, but only by a hair, and everyone in DC pats each other on the back and says "the system worked!" and never get around to fixing all of the norms Trump's broken, all the precedents he set, and all the technically-not-illegal loopholes he's exploited so far?

Think about it from a security perspective: okay, so the guy who got into your network turned out to be a script kiddie, who didn't do any real damage because the user db password happened to be in a nonstandard location, and he didn't know how to use any of his tools beyond running them and hoping for the best so he just changed all the text on the site to "MAGA LOL." That could have been worse, you can just restore things... but you still have to patch whatever his exploit was!

It's just "people are saying," i.e. something he wants to say but still wants to deny later that he said it. That's probably how he does all the ordering around internally, too: "people are saying you need to tell congress we never spoke to Russia," followed by a pause to convey intent.

A lot of those norms you speak of can't be overtly "fixed" but can only heal with time - maybe measured in decades. Some, like the Iran agreement, we might be able to paper over by re-joining but will the others ever fully trust us during at least our lifetime.

The biggest set back is, of course, global warming. Even if Dump only lasts four years the time lost is ... well, lost. And even if we completely turn around to be really aggressive in our efforts, will the rest of the world get behind our leadership. Maybe over time, a commodity we have little of.
