The Trump Presidency 13: The (James) Baker's Dozen

Russia's response is pretty funny, in a dark way.
Apparently Russia has legit oil interests in Venezuela.

He is snapping the leash rather snappishly.

Trump is going to roll over. He'll reverse "his people" again and undo any moves his administration has made. Maybe his subservience will tick off Bolton or a few senators, but not enough to really matter.
Yes this dilemma is a tad funny.

I shudder to think what sort of legislative solution he thinks could be created in an hour.

"All foreigners crossing the border will be shot on sight. All in favor, say 'Aye'."

As long as it stays in his thinker, that's OK.

I shudder to think what sort of situation he could actually create in an hour.

“The Trump Administration has succeeded in dramatically raising the costs to Iran for its sinister behavior, at no cost to the U.S. or our allies. That’s the definition of a foreign-policy achievement.” Bret Stephens, @nytimes

Is the NY Times Fake News or not these days? I've not been keeping up.

While Stephens is far from a Trump fan, he's the token Pro-Israel Neocon on the NYT editorial staff. But the retweet is probably not by Trump. It's dual purpose is to blow the Trump horn while showing other conservatives that even #nevertrump stalwarts realize how wonderful he is. There's too much subtlety for him to have originated the Tweet.

"Sinister Behavior" is a great name for a band.

Not sure Trump knows he is making things worse.
I think he thinks that for every issue, there is one person he can personally bully to get it fixed. He probably expects the leaders from these countries to call him and ask for the assistance to be restored, and in return they won't send any more migrants, as if it that was in their power to do.

Seems to me that the best way to cut down on the flow of refugees from these central American countries would be to provide MORE funding with the goal of making them less dangerous and providing more jobs. If that was even partially successful, there would be no need for Dump's stoopid fence.
Couple of things. I'm not sure Trump wants to slow the flow on refugees. He may want to make things worse for political purposes.

And handing out aid to foreign governments isn't always a great way to help people. Better would be remittances to families, which sends the money to impoverished people rather than corrupt governments.

In honor of his past service to our Country, Navy Seal #EddieGallagher will soon be moved to less restrictive confinement while he awaits his day in court. Process should move quickly! @foxandfriends @RepRalphNorman

From the article.
Trump's previous threats to pull the plug, however, had often left U.S. officials scratching their heads and straining to explain why these funds described as key to stemming migration would be cut off -- as punishment for not stemming migration.

This is the kind of response that will play well with Trump's base (and Sean Hannity): We give you money to stem immigration and we don't see it working. Guess what? The trouble is, these kinds of feel-good solutions usually don't work. And Trump has proven over many years he is a master at knowing how to take a bad situation and make it a lot worse.

If it does make things worse, that will probably play well with his base, too. 1) It probably won't effect them in any way and 2) they like to see people suffer. ;)

It's like it's never occurred to them that it's possible the money they're spending is curtailing refugees - it's just that there would be a lot more of them if they weren't spending the money.

Wait, no, it's not "like" that, it actually is that.

True, that,

I'm not a big fan of foreign aid, but what little I've read it was supposed to go for more job opportunities and help in reining in the gangs. I can support that. Remittances to families may help that immediate family but does nothing to change the built-in societal issues that lead to seek safety elsewhere.
