horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Possibly the letter not being publicized caused the need for a more public incident, such as a racist attack seen on security cameras.

Actually where are we with the letter? Is it still a possibility that the letter was real and that Jussie motive was that he didn't think the letter was getting enough attention? I think I'm still struggling with the level of stupidity that must have gone in to this.

To me one of the most interesting aspects of the story is the fact that we have a guy that had a successful career that many would dream of as a professional actor, but it seems what he really wanted was to get the sympathy and attention of being the victim of a certain kind of hate crime. The motivation was so strong that he spent a good amount of money and effort to try and stage the perfect progressive "I told you so" hate crime story with himself at the center.

Think about that for a moment. It is almost as if the highest status one can achieve within certain segments of the population is that of a certain kind of victimhood.

Maybe not victim hood as much as the tough gay man. He said as much in his GMA interview

Don't be surprised if it turns out the CPD has film of the incident or at least more film than they let us know about.

Also, don't be surprised if they have phone records of him and the one brother leading up to, and shortly after the incident.

There will be no ability to point fingers at the other brother, they've both already given a statement implicating Smollett. This is why they were released.
Their story matched the evidence that the CPD had, Smollett is acting like the police only have what they have shown the public.

I would hope these guys would be smart enough to use cash and burner phones when commiting crimes

If TMZ is to be believed, then Jussie thought that the fight would be recorded on at least one surveillance camera - so was one of the bros in "White face"?

My guess would be that at night, the camera resolution is not very good, such that you could only get a general idea of what happened, but couldn't make out anything too specific.

Just good enough to support the claim, but not good enough to identify anyone.

This may be one of the reasons night time was chosen.

Going forward, I humbly submit that all instances of someone paying two Nigerian bodybuilders to lightly rough them up in subzero temperatures and play-act lynching them be referred to as getting Smolested.
If it all pans out that its bollocks, I would include any fake 'one side v the other' attack with a political tinge, as being called smolested.

It sounds like he had them send the letters, and then when the publicity didn't come around, he decided to up the game a little.

The massive walk back is beginning:

Doubt we are going to get a walk back from the race grifters who referred to us white supremacists and racists for doubting this obviously bull **** story from the get go.
Are you declaring that you actually are white supremacists and racists?
or did you forget to put US in capital letters?

Partisanship can be helpful in advancing skeptical examination of claims. A countervailing bias can open up inquiries that would be avoided or ignored by one's own allies. Instead of being at each other's throats, we should be working together.

I would say that extends to the degree that retaining victim status is even more important than finding a solution.

This is not a uniquely progressive thing, mind you, the Christian Right uses the same basic playbook.

Perhaps that was the reason for the rehearsal so they wouldn't turn their face to the camera?

I'm not sure that I would count on the camera to have the desired low resolution if I didn't even know which end is the pointy end. Then again the way this story is going, Jussie might have gone in to the shop and asked the owner what the resolution on the surveillance camera is/was.

Yep, a great example of someone who defines themselves primarily in terms of their victim status despite being in the top fraction of a percentage of the most privileged humans on the planet. It's a super-charged version of the billionaire Oprah Winfrey whining about her experience of racist persecution when she wasn't served as swiftly as she would have liked when perusing a $38,000 handbag in Trois Pommes of Zurich, one of the world's most exclusive boutiques.

I think I read that the camera is pointed either up or down the street on alternate days, or something like that.

But yeah, you'd have to be sure it wouldn't show too much detail.

Maybe the display for the camera is visible at the security desk?

In an ironic twist, I'm actually coming back around to thinking it really is a horrifying attack *and* a hate crime.

Just... Not for the reasons Travis had in mind when he started this thread.
