horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Far simpler to hand them to him in a towel or something at the gym. Keeps accomplices from being easily placed at the scene

Some of these ideas would depend on what the goal of the hoax was along with who is behind it.

Was it ever intended to go public, for example?

Was it ever intended to go as far as it did?

Was the goal to get something out of FOX?

Was the goal just publicity? The letter does not appear to have been publicized. Did that lack of publicity necessitate another stunt?

It's still possible that Jussie is just the pawn in a publicity plot by his handlers.

People don't pay attention to the real racism and hate crimes that go on every day in this country. What else should a socially conscious celebrity do, if not use their celebrity status to grab headlines and Twitter feeds, and raise awareness of this serious problem?

If the police are never called, there's no reason to not just go to a store and buy a rope and bleach.
People have been known to make things more complicated than they need to be. I think whatever really happened, a lot of what went into it probably wasn't strictly necessary. And a few things that should have gone into it were left out.

My baseline assumption is that Condo Guy knew he was dodging a bullet, when he called the police...

Not run hoaxes?

While that's true, three people making something vastly more complicated than what benefits anyone is a little less plausible.

So again, if this is a hoax, it seems like it would have to have some weird moving parts and motivations that no one has touched on.

Complications that a bunch of people sign off on and spend their time and energy on, will generally have some justification even if it's a poor and mistaken one.

You can call this an argument from incredulity if you like (And I hope you'd equally apply that to most of the thread) but I'm having a whole lot of trouble imagining a scenario in which Smollett wanted to convince condo guy he was attacked that night, needed two accomplices to bring him props and somehow all three saw that as reasonable enough to spend their time on in the freezing cold in the middle of the night.

Jussie may have done that and the brothers didn't deliver that stuff. Jussie may have bought that stuff way before the incident and carried them in pockets until the "moment of attack".

Then why would the brothers be involved at all? If the plan didn't involve the police, what does their presence add?

It does if any random person saw them and disputed the twitterstorm. Three can keep a secret if two are dead and all. There was no reason whatsoever to involve accomplices if it was a low tech hoax
That assumes that it was a publicly stunt. It may not have been a hoax for that purpose.
