horrifying attack on Jussie Smollett

Smollett is right about one thing - eating tuna salad before a date is offensive.

chicago sun times today said:
“I’ve heard that it was a date gone bad, which I so resent that narrative. I’m not going to go out to get a tuna salad sandwich to meet somebody. That’s ridiculous, and it’s offensive,” he said.

“Yes, there’s Grindr. Yes, there’s Jack’d. Yes, there’s all of these things, which I have not been on in years,” Smollett said, referring to gay meet-up apps.

met one of them on the set of Empire, got their numbers, for when he is in town and needs something done.

Comes up with this weird plan to have them come and beat him up, and get out of town the next day, only plans on telling the condo guy, getting a news story, or GMA interview, but the condo guy calls the cops. Cameras weren't supposed to be in play, cops weren't supposed to get involved, "I was too embarrassed to call the police" would have been his line.

Perhaps originally it was supposed to just be letters, but they didn't get any media coverage, so he does this 'attack' and when the cops are called it goes to hell.

Well, something happened, maybe just a slip on the sidewalk. Who knows?

That no one else is seen entering or leaving the 60 second zone is not some trifling detail, though. It's a show-stopper.

It sounds that way, although I'm still suspicious of the info that the police have a full 29 minutes of wandering on video and precisely one minute of wandering unaccounted for. I mean, what did this guy do for 29 minutes seeing as his friend's house was only 400 yards from Subway?

Still, if the evidence is as presented it pretty much cements the idea of a hoax.

No homophobia here, just real skepticism.

Yep, rabid homophobia, slavering at the mouth with it. You grasp those straws!

Once again, the supposed 60 second window has never been confirmed in a quoted official police statement.

Once again, there is nothing whatsoever to discuss if that is the standard. Police don't release every detail so we would have to suspend all speculation in deference. More fun to run with what we have.

If there is no 60 sec window, things look much worse for our hero. The earlier video traces the route, and shows cameras galore. The police report indicates 4 in the area of the attack, as Smollett indicated to police. giving the 60 sec zone the benefit of the doubt is more charitable. At least it leaves a possibility that this was not a hoax.

Plausible, but I think they would still not do that on the street. A vigilante hero or cop cruiser could pull around the corner unexpectedly and our extras become late extras. I'm still convinced nothing happened on the sidewalk at all, except for draping the clothesline and bleach baptism.

I have yet to see anything that really contradicts the initial read. Supposed major contradictions are mostly based on things neither Smollett nor the police said. Neither said the assailants were white. Neither said there was a broken rib etc etc.

Its only if you take the media statements using non quoted, leaked and unofficial statements and speculation that much is changing. If you look at the official statements and don't make weird assumptions this is unfolding in a fairly linear way.
I understand that and am also keen on the difference between the original linear track and unconfirmed leaks. But that still leaves us with a problem and that problem is Smollett himself.

He says that the guys in the video absolutely are his attackers no doubt about it. He says he saw the nose of one attacker and it is a white nose.

Important for media reporting: The people of interest are alleged to be in the area where a crime was reported. They are not considered suspects at this time as they are currently being questioned by detectives. We remain in communication with the alleged victim.

Alleged to be in the area, not considered suspects...

At the time of this post, CPD must have been in the process of picking them up and getting the search warrant, because they went and broke down the doors.

When did he say white? I looked for that quote before and didn't find it.

Smollett can get in front of a public microphone right now and say, "Those guys that are being interrogated right now cannot be my attackers. I saw the nose of one attacker and it was a white nose. A white man."

I think you miss the alternative that there is a window longer than 60 seconds which would increase the plausibility if an attack.

Hate inspired crimes which involve people who know each other are not so unheard of.

What I find odd are the posters who are so sure that because these men are Nigerian they couldn't be Trump supporters. Why is that?

That said, there is no shortage of homophobia in Nigeria. Same sex relations are illegal there, it is rare for people to be openly gay and violence against gay people is common.

As for the racial element, the use of the 'n' word could have been the variant ending in "a". Or it may have been a racial insult. Animus from African immigrants towards African American descendents of slaves is a real thing.

I have yet to see anything that really contradicts the initial read. Supposed major contradictions are mostly based on things neither Smollett nor the police said. Neither said the assailants were white. Neither said there was a broken rib etc etc.

I suppose it could still be a hoax, but it would have to be a pretty wacky one to conspire to have two people fake a beating but purposefully do it out of camera shot. Why have any people there at all? This would have had to be planned days in advance if not weeks, so details like having the manager actually on the phone would be easy. The hoax version of this is so bizarre that i would need a lot more evidence in favor to consider it. I'm up to 70/30 that this was an actual attack. Could still be wrong but I'm finding it less likely.

man, when you pile it that high, y'all need a steamshovel.

Couple of african-africans who went to high school in Boystown and work as extras on Empire are Trump fans?

Hoo boy.

That would suggest that like half the cameras were not working. The guy who videoed the route took about 2 minutes to film it. I didn't count the cameras, but there were an awful lot of them.

There's still that no-one-seen-entering-or-leaving-the area thing, except the two guys from 15 minutes earlier who left the area and didn't return (assuming accuracy).

When did he say white? I looked for that quote before and didn't find it.

He said he saw the eyes and the bridge of the nose of the initial attacker.

So he should have been able to discern the skin color. White should have stood out against the dark ski mask.

He also said he gave a body description of the first attacker to the cops and saw the eyes and bridge of the nose of that initial attacker but couldn't tell what color that person's eyes were.

"Smollett said that on the night he had walked detectives down to the site of the alleged attack and had seen a surveillance camera right above the spot. But the camera was found to be pointing in the wrong direction to capture anything."

So according to Smollett, there wouldn't be any video of the attack, and CPD knew that immediately.

So all the searching for video of the attack by CPD never actually happened, imo.

They knew immediately that the attack happened off-camera.

EDIT: If you believe Smollett took them to the spot as he says.

CPD has stated clearly that they do not have video of the attack.

So the attack did not occur in view of any of the cameras on the route.
Which means that they might have some interesting video that does not show an attack. Such as...

Smollett putting a noose on his own neck.

Smollett meeting with the two guys in some form of interaction which is not really an attack.

Or maybe something else that isn't an attack per se.

If it happened right above the attack, it wouldn't capture anything unless it was pointed down (pretty convenient). But there is still the approach and escape. Attackers cannot materialize out of thin air, AFAIK.
