Canada, eh?
I think we need a thread about the dumbest suggestion on how government employees should handle the shutdown.

So far, we've seen various ideas floated by Trump and/or members of his administration... take out a mortgage, get free food, etc. We've also seen people suggest they should be happy to sacrifice themselves. For the most part, those suggestions show how out of touch Trump and his minions are regarding how the average person lives.

So what do people think is the dumbest idea that's been floated?

I went with the Trump "get free food from your grocer" suggestion.

Mostly because Trump's ignorance over how grocery stores function had already been illustrated (with his "you need ID to buy groceries"). You would have figured that some of his minions would have suggested to him not to talk about shopping anymore since it makes him look bad. The fact that he went back to the well more than once makes his particular brand of stupidity edge out the others.

I went Kudlow simply because that’s well into the realm of charismatic dictatorship delusional.

But they are all incredibly out of touch and appalling.

Honorable Mention to one of our Trump Supporters here, who said it was a wonderful opportunity to see what parts of government we don't need.

That excuse justification alternative fact thoughtful reasoning is being touted by Trump Cheerleaders all across their favourite internet forums and social media outlets.

And of course the more they spread the word across the worldwide web, the more we'll all suddenly realize that we haven't been looking at this thing the right way.

Kudlow dropped two lies into one statement. Being told, really ordered back to work, since failure to report could result in termination, is not volunteering by any stretch of imagination. And calling that loyalty is obscene.

Just read an article that 14K IRS people refused to report. 5K claimed hardship. 9K could not be reached. One unit that I know of had 10 of 100 employees report in.

If that's the case, then that probably explains Trump's ending of the shutdown. Because people (read: Trump supporters) not getting their income tax refunds is one thing that really could have turned his base against him.

I voted Trump. The “leader” of the free world has never been in a grocery store. **** me.

Well, it's still going to be an ugly filing season. Normally, the call center folks would be training up some seasonal employees to handle the calls. That's not likely to happen, and if we double dip on the furloughs, good luck to anyone who needs help from a human. Call early, have a speakerphone or headset handy as you will be waiting.

Even the seasonals who handle the returns may not get trained up / called in / hired. Considering the changes to the tax law and forms, everyone is going to need some additional training on the 1040 line.

But yes, it's going to be ugly in submission processing.

Hell, I've been waiting almost a year for my late mother's last refund. When I contacted them they said their records show they received the paperwork but they don't know where it is. I'm told to resend it. They said they'll send a letter to me if they need anything more. Months go by. I finally contact them again and they tell me a box wasn't checked and to send in yet another copy with the correct box checked. I did. Just got a letter from them telling me it'll be another 2 months before I'll receive the refund. Freaking IRS.

I went with the Trump "get free food from your grocer" suggestion.

What puts this one over the edge is that Trump, twice, made the claim you need ID to buy stuff at grocery stores.

So you need ID to buy stuff there, but they'll just give you food for free. Yeah that tracks.

Quite. The problem lies in getting Trump from here to there.

The manned version the Space-X Dragon capsule should be launching next month on its first test flight. Invite Trump to take a tour, slam the hatch and light the blue touch paper...
