The United States looses soooo much money on Trade with Mexico under NAFTA, over 75 Billion Dollars a year (not including Drug Money which would be many times that amount), that I would consider closing the Southern Border a “profit making operation.”

I'm guessing that he thinks closing the border would be an entirely one-way situation. We'll still be selling our $236 billion in annual exports to Mexico, but nothing from Mexico will be coming into the US.

.....close the Southern Border. Bring our car industry back into the United States where it belongs. Go back to pre-NAFTA, before so many of our companies and jobs were so foolishly sent to Mexico. Either we build (finish) the Wall or we close the Border......

.....Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador are doing nothing for the United States but taking our money. Word is that a new Caravan is forming in Honduras and they are doing nothing about it. We will be cutting off all aid to these 3 countries - taking advantage of U.S. for years!
Didn't he personally renegotiate the trade agreement to be the best ever trade agreement?

It would be easier to invade and occupy Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama and just fortify the 50 mile Panama Canal then it would be to make a secure wall across the entire United States / Mexican border.

Trump if you are reading this, that doesn't mean I think you should do that instead, just pointing out how absurd what you are proposing is.
Trump doesn't read, you'll just have to hope none of his Fox advisors read the forum!

"It's gonna be the best, biggest, semi-permeable membrane the world has ever seen...."

That's called a pocket veto. And I'm sure one of his toadies will tell him. Saves the President from signing a bill he hates as well the embarrassment of being over-ridden.

It's kind of ridiculous...but hey.

No, a pocket veto is different. It's when the Congress sends him a bill (they haven't) and the congressional session ends. If he doesn't sign it before the session ends it doesn't become law. If, on the other hand, he doesn't sign it within 10 days and the session continues, it DOES become law.

As I understand it, of course.

Things are usually pretty quiet in December before the Xmas trade figures
emerge; they're regarded as a good proxy for consumer confidence. If those
are bad ... well, it won't be good.

Trump's little trade war screws up those numbers.
Consumer confidence looks fine, employment and wages seem okay.
M1 and M2 a bit troublesome, but not totally bad.

The time to go short up to the elbow is when someone announces that
"the economic fundamentals are sound". It's the tell of all tells.

"The fundamentals remain extremely sound..." Close but not the magic phrase.

Of course a smart person would wonder how much of that $75 Billion is raw materials, foodstuffs, components, etc. that ends up in US factories and shopping baskets. As I say a smart person would wonder about that...

He can also, as I understand it, not sign it but not send it back either. It then becomes law in 10 days. I wonder if he knows that.

You're right. It's not an actual veto if the bill doesn't become a law.

What was I thinking? McFly? !!

No, if you buy something from Mexico, you "lose" that money. That's how trade works. Leather jacket from Leon for $150? You "lose" $150, even if you wear the jacket. Drink $15 worth of tequila? You "lose" $15. Buy a Volkswagen assembled in Puebla? You "lose" full MSRP on that car you own. It's axiomatic. Wharton grads know this.

If Trump can “close the Southern Border,” what does he need a wall for?

I don't think so. He would perceive others taking the discourse down to his level as a win for himself.

That was my first thought. However, by remaining respectful, Pelosi and Schumer showed themselves to be the adults in the room. It made Trump's use of their first names appear even more loutish.

What’s funny is that after Trump said in front of Chuck and Nancy that he would own the shutdown, he now blames democrats for the shutdown.

Please, for my sake, don't give him any ideas!!!! :)

Trump's use of first names is just another manifestation of his need to take everything personally.

It's also a manifestation of his need to denigrate/bully/disrespect anyone who dares to stand up to or disagree with him. His ego is extremely fragile and he overcompensates by being a 'tough guy'.
