My late $0.o2 I'm not so conflicted. Dump is doing the right thing for the wrong reasons and horribly in the wrong way but the end is right. We've been in Afghanistan for what, 18 years. Opium production continues apace. The government of the country is really the government of Kabul. The Taliban really rules the roost.

We've spent 100s of billions for what? Nothing, as far as I can see. Syria is much the same: What, really, is our national interest, in defeating Asad. Yeah, he's horrible. So's Kim in North Korea. So's MBS in Saudi.

The Middle East is a tar baby. I say let the Arabs piss on each other and keep out troops out of harm's way.

/Rant

Same here, for years we used Afghanistan to help grind the USSR into bits and then we jump into that frying pan ourselves.

The only way to stop drugs, gangs, human trafficking, criminal elements and much else from coming into our Country is with a Wall or Barrier. Drones and all of the rest are wonderful and lots of fun, but it is only a good old fashioned Wall that works!

It might, but I think the most likely scenario is that Trump will lose the next election.

The reasons?

- The election was extremely close (coming down to a handful of votes in a couple of swing states). In order for Trump to repeat, he would have to either hold on to all the votes he got in the first place (difficult, since he's pissing off at least a few of his voter base) or pick up new voters (unlikely, since he seems to be unable to get out of the whole 'us-vs-them' mentality)

- The cheating worked as well as it did because Hillary had been successfully smeared for years by the republican party. I can't think of another potential candidate where similar attacks would work (at least not as well).

- Although Trump and the republicans have not taken significant steps to stop cheating in the future, at least the democrats know not to take states like Penn. and Wisc. for granted

On paper, those reason appear to be sound and logical. But the largest factor in who wins an election is who that person is running against. Until the Dems decide on a candidate, very little can be reliably predicted.

Speaking of which, is Secretary Clinton planning on entering the primaries to have another go at it?

I will not be going to Florida because of the Shutdown - Staying in the White House! #MAGA
I wonder uf this might be some self-preservation. I think the secret service is one of the groups affected by the shutdown. (Agents don't get paid but still have to work.)

Visiting mar a lago under the protection of a bunch of pissed off agents may not seem like the safest thing to do. "I know i an supposed to take a bullet for the president, but im not getting paid for this."

Yes there's no way to bring in drugs and other contraband into the US from the outside if there's a wall (or a barrier) in the way. No one is going to even think about moving around, under or over it.

I am completely unmoved by this line of reasoning. The enormous gobs of money they've made allow them to use a tiny percentage to whitewash their negative (to society) activities. For example, they've been able to buy legislators and policy to reduce emissions from their facilities. They've sponsored university chairs in economics with the restriction that their libertarian ideas are forced into academia.

Imagine if they had paid better wages, offered high quality health care, and otherwise distributed their gains to those who worked to produce those gains how much better off tens of thousands of people would be.

No, I don't buy that, "well, look here at something good" gives them some get-out-of-jail-free card. Nope, I don't buy their whitewashing - at all.

I don't disagree with you one bit. I'm not trying to rehabilitate the Koch brothers. I can't stand them. Nevertheless, I think it is disingenuous not to give them credit for the little good they do.

Bill Clinton is charismatic. Hillary has all the charm of a turnip.

On the day after the 2016 election, the son of one of Hillary's long-time friend held an adoption party, to celebrate the adoption of their child. Hillary couldnt make it, of course, but she calles to congratulate them and told them how happy she was for them.

The day after the worst day of her life, she is able to celebrate other's happiness.

Lack of charm?

I think Hillary is a very good person. And I've heard people say over and over again, that she is charming one on one. That said, on center stage, she doesn't come across that well.

Is that unfair?

It is to me a sad development that likable as term means people who only know you from a camera like you rather than applying to people that actually interact with you.

Does he not realise that drones can be used to bring drugs over his fence?

Or even more low-tech methods...

https://nordic.businessinsider.com/...nd-narco-drug-catapult-on-border-wall-2017-2/
Border patrol agents in Douglas, Arizona, removed a catapult from the border fence, which was being used to hurl drugs into the US from Mexico.
...border agents in Naco arrested two teenagers who were found with a bundle of marijuana after surveillance cameras detected drugs being launched over the border by an air cannon.

Plus, lets face it, if your 'wall' involves a bunch of posts with gaps in it, its probably not that difficult to just pass the drugs through the gaps. Granted you may have to make the packages smaller, but that's a minor impediment.

I agree with a recent headline that the central problem with Trump is not so much that he is an empty vessel, but that he is a malignant one. 99% of his decisions are driven by an intense desire for personal revenge that supersedes any rationale, logic, or consideration of outcome.

Too bad for the rest of us 300 million Americans, not to mention the 7 billion in the world as a whole...

But that describes most of that 7 billion,
