Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

If I had to guess, Trump is the only one to trumpet about this routine annual proclamation since the day was first established by Eisenhower.

That's because he thinks he came up with something unique.

"Did you know the Wright Bros flew the first airplane on this day? Amazing!"

All of his deals are private. Those of the Clintons, Mueller, Obama etc. not so much.

What I find interesting is that the viewpoint being attributed to Trump there seems very close to the FMOTL idea that everything is contracts, i.e. “deals”.

On December 17, 1903, the first successful flight of Wilbur and Orville Wright's handcrafted biplane ushered in the age of aviation and changed the course of history.
And to think, it took less than 90 years to go from the first flight by the Wright brothers until Trump's airline (a.k.a. Trump Shuttle) went out of business.

While Trump’s airline may be gone, the tax break he received from running it into bankruptcy likely remains.

Gee, I wonder why Trump isn't bragging about the stock market lately.

The Dow fell 600 points, or 2.6%. The S&P 500 lost 2.6% and retreated to its lowest level of the year. And the Nasdaq joined the Dow & S&P 500 in negative territory for 2018. All three indexes have plunged about 7% so far this December.

Oh, that's why.

Today I am making good on my promise to defend our Farmers & Ranchers from unjustified trade retaliation by foreign nations. I have authorized Secretary Perdue to implement the 2nd round of Market Facilitation Payments. Our economy is stronger than ever–we stand with our Farmers!

So strong that the govt has to pay farmers to stop them going bust.

James Comey unloads on House Republicans and Fox News.

“Their silence is shameful,” Comey said, referring to Republicans who have largely remained silent or supported the president as he attacks the law enforcement institutions that are investigating him. “Someday, they gotta explain to their grandchildren what they did today.”

I can't see the revival of the ACA fight being a good thing for Republicans.

They all agree that they hate the ACA, but that's it. No ideas, after all these years and public moaning, of what to actually replace it with. Some want to go back to the bad old days, some want minor tweaks, and some have no ideas at all.

The ACA is a stopgap with many, many annoying problems. The only thing worse than the ACA is the situation that existed before it became law.

Hell, they don't even know why they hate it.

They hate Obamacare but want the ACA.

Why will it be hard to explain?
We live in a post-factual society; they can make up any story they want about how they valiantly fought President Trump and how the enemy-of-the-people press didn’t report anything about their heroism.

Yeah, he's making the unevidenced assumption they can still feel shame.

I must say that I live with the real concern that my children, and their children, will curse us all; some of us for their actions and some for their inactions. Not just in terms of abandoning our democratic principles and government, but for so many other issues: global climate change, the sell off and destruction of public parks, the extension of huge numbers of habitats and species, etc.

My god, what are we leaving our children and grandchildren? And why is this question so instinctively central to all the parents I know, ignored so readily by Trump and his supporters? Are they really expecting themselves to be raptured before their progeny will suffer? Or is it for the wealthy to just grab what they can now and to hell with their children?

We are having similar thoughts here (UK) about Brexit. The younger people were heavily against it. My son has just qualified as an engineer (Masters degree proud dad) and was looking forward to having a go in Germany after getting a bit of experience in electrical and hybrid drives here.
Now it's all up in the air.
Fortunately I was strongly remain so he still loves me.

They hate Obamacare but want the ACA.

When Trump was first elected, I saw interviews with supporters who said exactly that. One woman, for example, was going on and on about the evils of Obamacare. The interviewer asked her whether she relied on the ACA and she said that yes, she'd not be able to afford the medicine she needed with out it. The reporter told her than Obamacare was just another name for the ACA and she wasn't having any of it. It simply wasn't true, as far as she was concerned.

This is an interesting interview. I think it's great that you have so many loyal Americans using their notoriety to damage Trump. It's always good for anyone to hurt Trump but it's nice that this patriot is doing so to such a global audience. Judging by its tweets, this week's SNL sketch caused Trump some real suffering. I hope the cast of SNL keeps it up. Their blows seem to be landing.

The ignorance of so many Trump supporters is ...well...unsurprising.

True. Feelings of persecution, whether real or imagined, are a unifying force.
Trump is using it now with his constant claims of "Witch Hunt", "Conflicted Mueller and his 13 Angry Democrats", "They want to embarrass me", etc. He presents himself as the victim and, as we've seen, his supporters rally around him even more strongly.
Not to mention the big ones: All those brown people are the reason you are not well off, not the massive tax cuts for the rich and big corporations, and they are going to ruin white Christian culture. And all those regulations were inhibiting growth, not protecting you from corporate pollution and dishonesty.

Those regulations were put in place for a reason; companies were not doing what the should have on their own volition. Their bottom line is always "will it cost me in profits?" Other than that, they don't give a damn. I had to laugh when Trump declared that our air is the cleanest ever. I guess the idiot doesn't realize that it's the result of all those clean air regulations he's so hell bent on getting rid of. Moron.
