Cont: The Trump Presidency 11: Insert something funny

The Dems should give Trump the funds for the Wall, limited until the end of 2020.
He won't get far with building it.
Tell him the Dems will compromise... they will vote for any budget proposal for Wall funding (regardless of how much) if Mexico matches it.

Most of Trump's claims during that meeting have already been debunked. He's mostly just repeating old misinformation (aka 'alternative facts').

Ten terrorists caught:

It’s not clear what Trump’s referring to. During the debate over the migrant caravan, Vice President Pence claimed that the government was apprehending 10 terrorists or suspected terrorists *a day* on the border, a claim that his office later walked back.

A report from the State Department last year undercut Trump’s point more broadly, noting that there was “no credible information that any member of a terrorist group has traveled through Mexico to gain access to the United States.”

Bringing disease:
"The two-year study found that international migrants are less likely than people in their host countries to die of heart disease, cancer, respiratory diseases and other ills,” NBC's report states. “The exceptions are hepatitis, tuberculosis and HIV. But the study also found these infections are generally only spread within the affected immigrant communities and not to the wider population."

Some of the reports of disease affecting migrant communities, the researchers found, were a result of the conditions of migration: exhaustion.

Migrants are not the ones bringing in drugs as Trump implied:
Illegal drugs “mostly come through the ports of entry” at the border, one senior administration official testified before Congress last year. In other words, most of the drugs that enter the country come through established border checkpoints, hidden in vehicles and then distributed throughout the country.

The official who made that point? Then-Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly. Another official testified in February 2017 that ports of entry “are the major points of entry for illegal drugs, where smugglers use a wide variety of tactics and techniques for concealing drugs."

ETA: Trump never learns because he never listens. I noticed every time Pelosi tried to explain something to him, he just interrupted and repeated the same thing over and over again. He's as dense as a brick wall and as interested in learning as one.

Trump sure isn't playing four-dimensional chess. He can scarsely manage a single dimension, and I'm not sure he can count to four, which would certainly explain several of the superlatives in his claims.

I loved hearing about how "a lot of the wall is done" and it's keeping out 95% of the invaders. Well then, what else would need to be done? (Schumer almost said as much.)

I'd be shocked if Trump knows how to play chess. If he does, he probably thinks he can beat Magnus Carlson or even me.

Separately, of course, a strong argument can be made for Trump having also violated the Treason and Bribery clauses as well.

Technically, which means in reality, Individual One has not committed treason, because treason is only possible when a state of war exists against the other country.

<snip>

From that, you might be able to figure out my feelings on the "civility" calls from the right, recently, though. Hillary calls roughly a sixth of the country "deplorable" and that's outrageous. McConnell calls most of the country ******* idiots, Trump says all kinds of nasty BS slander about a heck of a lot more people constantly, and it gets lapped up.

Why is it outrageous? The subsequent two years have proven it to be true beyond any doubt.

If anything she understated the problem.

I know! Still, Schumer's word choice and demeanor weren't optimal. I think Pelosi owned both of them.

No one came away from this looking good;there are good reasons why these kind of discussions take place behind closed doors. That old saying about legisatation and sausage comes to mind. But Pelosi came off looking the least bad.
ANd her post conference comment about this being a Manhood thing for Trump was dead on. I think a lot of his behavior is based on his obsession with looking Macho and Tough. He never quite gets that Macho is often just another term for idiot.

Well, roughly 36% of Americans think that Trump should NOT compromise over the border wall. That's roughly the size of Trump's base support.

Claiming credit for a shutdown may just be a way to play to his base supporters (and screw anyone who is harmed by the shutdown. They shouldn't be getting government money anyways.)

Seems like a pointless waste of political capital. He's not in any danger of losing them.

It's the ones who aren't mindless Trump cultists he has to try to keep. and threatening to shut down the government isn't going to make that demographic feel all warm and fuzzy.

It's not that Trump lies...I have come to expect that from politicians of any variety....but that his lies are so incredibly dumb.
No matter how many lies politicians tell, there is absolutely no comparison to the outright delusions that pour out of Trump's mouth.
