There's a long theory that I haven't fully looked at and don't have time to detail here that he's getting money from the Saudis in exchange for services rendered, such as backing out of the Iran deal. That would be option 4, with 5 being "all of the above".

So, how much could they have slipped him without having a clear paper trail? $100,000,000? $300,000,000? He claims to have 10 billion. How twisted do one’s morals have to be to sell out your country for 3% of your net worth?

Mike Pence two days before Trump bends over to the Saudis:

"The murder of Jamal Khashoggi was an atrocity. It was also an affront to a free and independent press and the United States is determined to hold all of those accountable who are responsible for that murder."

Time to get some spine Republicans if there are any of you left in the rubble of the party that Trump has destroyed. This is too important.

Fixed it for him:

Hilarious!! Republicans have zero integrity. They are Trump's thugs now, they will support him no matter what.

If Pence can see how wrong this is then he would be better than Trump. He needs to take a leadership stand and start impeachment.

"Resident." Working on citizenship, but not quite there yet. And... yes. That we are is a sure sign that Trump and probably his entire staff should never have been put there.

His exact status isn't really relevant. What matters is, this is a guy who, when he felt his life was in danger from his own government, turned to the US for safety, as so many have before. And now he's been thrown under the bus by the President of the United States.

As with the refugees he's been harassing, it sends the clear message: "Need help? Go **** yourself!"

This is the guy who was willing to blow up NAFTA, which produces over a trillion dollars in trade every year, because he wanted greater tax-free access to the Canadian Dairy industry, which is worth about 10 billion a year. So, yeah, when it comes to money, "petty" is right up his alley.

Anyone want to defend Trump for trying to use the DOJ to go after his opponent and to discredit a witness against him?
Anyone?

Well, if I were a Trump supporter, I'd just blithely handwave it away with a "Failing New York Times!" and be done with it.

And that sort of thing is, IMO, the real damage Trumpism has done to political America- the idea that inconvenient facts can be simply dismissed by poisoning the well they come from. It's nothing new in human nature, to be sure; but it's one thing for folks at the bottom (so to speak), who don't (and don't want to) know any better to indulge in the reflex, and another thing entirely for it to be a considered policy by someone at the top who should (and should).

Not defending Trump, but based on the reports I think “ordered” is too strong a word here.

In part...

“President Trump told the White House counsel in the spring that he wanted to order the Justice Department to prosecute two of his political adversaries: his 2016 challenger, Hillary Clinton, and the former F.B.I. director James B. Comey, according to two people familiar with the conversation.”

(italics mine)

It’s really more like he pressed a desire to order something, and then backed down “on the advice of counsel”.

Bad enough, but short of actually ordering something.

you honestly think this is how it went down?
Trump is the kind of person who says what he wants and expects the people around him to jump.
The fact that McGahn and possibly Sessions told him that this would be monumentally stupid made an expressed wish of the President into a mere thought, according to the records.

Why do you think this memo was leaked now?
Because Sessions and McGahn are gone, and Whitaker might just be the kind of guy to do what Trump says out loud and pick up the pieces later.
This leak is an attempt to prevent Trump from making the same impeachable mistake again, but this time without adult supervision.

He might be selling out our country for a few hundred thousand dollars. The Saudis pay Trump and his spawn about $85,000 a year in amenities fees for owning a floor in Trump Plaza to house their UN mission. They also regularly stay in Trump hotels, one stay reportedly causing a spike of thirteen percent in revenues for the month at the Trump International hotel in New York.

Is it though? He deals with lots of people used to wording orders in less that specific language. "Will no one rid me of these troublesome critics?" "It would be a shame if something bad were to happen to your building" and so no.

Trump Tweets

"Oil prices getting lower. Great! Like a big Tax Cut for America and the World. Enjoy! $54, was just $82. Thank you to Saudi Arabia, but let’s go lower!"

His 'reward'?
