Who's going to TAM4?

Me and a friend are dreaming of going. It depends on how much it's going to cost us. Perhaps some Scandinavians here can shed some light on what the price tag look like for a trip like this?

I've never been to the US before, so if we're going, we would probably want to stay another week so that Las Vegas isn't the only place we visit. Any recommendations, any places we need to go to?

Another body count

Well, time for another count on who’s coming and to make it more interesting (and maybe a bit controversial, just to stir the pot) I’ve broken it up into several Cohorts (don’t know why-just felt like calling them Cohorts). I’ve also listed the number of posts made per the new database.

Remember, this is my post I get to make the rules up… :D

1st Cohort—these folks have either posted so much or so long (usually both) or have met each other before at TAM’s or other events that they are most likely to get together or already know one another. Some, like Hal or the Bad Astronomer, don’t have a lot of posts but they are very well known to most everyone on the site.

1. Brown—6,218
2. Bruce—4,396
3. CF Larsen—18,499
4. Chaos—3,085
5. Chanileslie—1,943
6. Nyarlathotep—5,002
7. Schizobunny—126 (daughter of Chanileslie and Nyarlathotep, so she’s got connections)
8. Electric Monk—387
9. Hal Bidlack—134
10. Hutch—1,846
11. Illegal Argument—761
12. Jas—1,528
13. Jeff Wagg—406
14. Kittynh—8,133
15. Kitten—608 (I think Kitten2 is coming also, but she’s not listed in the Forum database?)
16. Patricio Elicer—1,765
17. Paul C. Anagnotopoulos—6,705
18. Phil—3,667
19. Rebecca—2,933
20. Renata—3,314
21. Roadtoad—3,581 (newbie I most want to meet)
22. Stimpson J. Cat—1,493
23. The Bad Astronomer--433
24. The Central Scrutinizer—6,576
25. Treble Head—1,984
26. Walter Wayne—1,017
27. Zep—12,628
28. Darat—10,022.
29. Girl 6—3,278
30. RS Lancaster—2,727
31. Kramer-1,281
32. Joshua Korsoi-3,889
33. Delphi_ote—934

2nd Cohort: These folks have posted over the years, or have shown promise in the short time they have posted, but really don’t have the board coverage or ‘contacts’ that the above have. Of course, I could be wrong…and they should have no trouble blending in with the bunch above, there are sure to have friends and much mutual respect with the folks above—it’s just I don’t know them all that well, and it’s my thread, my rules, remember? ;) (I’m especially looking forward to meeting Antiquehunter, supercorgi, Piratelad, TJslough…aw heck, I want to meet all of you!!)

1. Antiquehunter—118
2. DeBergerac-233
3. Triangle Man-294 (also a notable Bad Astronomy BB member)
4. BS Investigator—260
5. citytom—52
6. Fun to be Free—244
7. Lord of the Left Hand--102
8. Mfeldman—334
9. Supercorgi--218
10. Terry--508
11. TJ Stough--78
12. Spacefluffer—442
13. Pirate Lad—598 (90% sure of coming)

3rd Cohort—folks who are active but have restricted their posting to one forum or widely scattered posts, so they might not be that well-known to the rest—but they will still be most welcome. Best example for that was a poster last year (duppyraces) who posted about a month before the TAM, enjoyed most of the activities with us, and hasn’t posted almost anything since. But she was included in the fun—and so will you, if you wish to be.

1. Hautden-47
2. Ed Baehr—19
3. Phyz--32
4. Troylus--34
5. Xargs--21
6. Markb—98 (might be unfair to you, markb, but I just can’t remember seeing your postings)
7. Dinsdale Piranha—21

4th Cohort—These folks have posted less than 10 times, and probably won’t be known to most of the people above. That does not mean you don’t walk up and introduce yourself if there are people you want to meet from the Board—just walk up and get involved. We are a fairly conspicuous group, and if you’re not sure, go to the book table and look for a fairly skeptical-looing white-haired man—odds are good that’ll be CF Larsen and if he’s in a good mood he may deign to point out a few others. But don’t be afraid to make contact. You can’t have fun if you’re too shy to ask where the party is.

1. Spiteme-1
2. Cave Dweller (1st timer)—7
3. Snex—4
4. CiviX—1 (from Norway)
5. Dunstan--4
6. Glenmac52--3
7. tracyann—6

Hmmmmm…that’s 60 by my count. I think that beats TAM3’s total and there may be more out there (Moe Faux?) undeclared or not decided yet. Keep working on the folks you want to see there and point them to the Bank of Hutch thread if they claim poverty. For the record, Boo has been asked and requested a pass until next year and we’re still working on Upchurch and drkitten among others. So the rest of you get to work and recruit more people!! :zzw:

Well, registration is $350 each and a hotel room for Wed-Mon (6 nights) will set you back about $456 (if you double up and share costs, it's $228 each, which ain't bad for 6 nights)

Airline fares on Expedia.com from Oslo-Las Vegas for about 2 weeks run about $1,220 R/T to $1482 R/T, then the fares climb above $2,200. You may be able to find cheaper ones on other sites or with SAS.

Food costs--breakfast and lunch buffets for Fri/Sat are included in registration costs and you can live cheaply or well, depending on your tastes and abiltiy to stomach American fast food.

Other stuff--either cheap (walk through various casinos/hotels) or expensive (Blue Man group show is about $100). If you don't gamble, you can still have fun without spending much.
I've never been to the US before, so if we're going, we would probably want to stay another week so that Las Vegas isn't the only place we visit. Any recommendations, any places we need to go to?
The Grand Canyon is about 8 hours away, but it may be snowed in. Air flights over the canyon are available in Vegas (not cheap). If it's open and you don't mind cold, it is worth the trouble.

There are almost hourly flights from Vegas to Los Angeles. Nearly that often to San Francisco/Oakland. San Diego, too--near the Mexican border.

It's going to be winter in most of the US in January so a lot of tourist areas are empty or not very busy. You might want to look into Yellowstone National Park for the winter months--that might be neat.

Any others?

I haven't posted for a long time. I made a few posts after TAM3, but not since then. But I have been on the board for almost 4 years, and I've been to every TAM, so that should count for something. :)

Is there something you're not telling us?!

Funny you should put me at number 2 on the well connected list. I've never been to a TAM meeting before (not by choice) and I've only met one other JREF'er in person. Can't wait to meet people, but this will be pretty weird for me. It was really wierd to meet The GM in person. Not only was it the first JREF'er I had met, but also the first person I had met only after forum conversations. It's easy to think of a person only in terms of black text or picture an image of what that person must look like. I was surprised to find that The GM didn't have nearly as much hair on her palms as I had pictured. :D

Pure happenstance. I'll be sure to put you near the bottom next time I update. ;) :p

I know what you mean. But I think you'll find most of us look vaguely human (Central Scrutinizer and bpesta now, welllll.....)

I was surprised to find that The GM didn't have nearly as much hair on her palms as I had pictured. :D

I am still working on getting the GM to come to TAM4--I think I'll send her that little bit just to give her some incentive to 'see' you again. :duck:

First of all: Thanks Hutch, I'm looking forward to meeting you too!

Second of all; I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!!! I'm so looking forward to TAM4. There are so many cool people that I've (sort of) met on this and the very recent Skepchick forum, that it has made me even more excited than I was before. So many people I am sincerely looking forward to meeting and hanging out with.

I've mentioned before (in my very early posts) that when I found JREF, I felt like I'd come home. That still remains true. The topics that are raised in the commentary and here on the forums have filled so many gaps in my life. So many questions or things that I couldn't quite put into words (or present a cogent argument against) have become clear to me now. The eloquence and brilliance of so many of you has really made an impact on my life. I want you all to know that. [/asskissing]

12 WEEKS TO TAM4 WOOHOO! :D

I just decided this weekenf that I'm going. Last year was too much fun to miss out on this year.

Hey, Hutch - move Spacefluffer (12) and DeBergerac (2) from list two into list one!! :) They were even JREF volunteers (as Larsen so aptly puts it 'crew'!) at the last TAM!

For a pretty lady like you, anything...;) :D Now if only you and the hubby were coming (whats a 20-hr flight anyway?)

Loon, great you can make it again, this time the flight will be a bit shorter (you are back in CONUS, aren't you?)

elspretre, xexeabar welcome to the list. We'll make it to 70 or bust!

I'm considering TAM4. It would be about time I show my mug. If I can talk one of my favorite strippers into coming along, I think I might just do it.

I can confirm that markb is a TAM veteran, way to go Mark!

Inspired by Hutch´s big post

Newbie Guide to Finding the Forum Crowd

As Hutch said, we´re a fairly conspicuous crowd.

CFLarsen is a skeptical-looking, white-haired man who seems to be the exact opposite of the word "Viking", although he does pillage the fruit juice supplies quite expertly. Be nice to him if you value your costal villages.
I´m the brown-haired bearded guy (not to be confused with Shanek) cracking jokes at the T-Shirt table during registration and getting zapped by Her Renataness in the process. I am also the person psychically bending books (softcover only) at the book sale. One more word: Chocolate.
Renata is the energetic skepchick that you will probably only see a blurred image of - yes, she´s that fast. If you intend to get close to her, wear isolating gloves or something to that effect to avoid transfer of electrical charges.
Girl 6 is the woman wearing a big smile (in addition to regular clothing... geez, you pervs...:boggled: ), and probably knitting. Prepare to get hugged.
If you hear impromptu poetry, you have probably found either Mercutio or Phil. Prepare to be challenged to limericks at twenty paces.

- to be continued -

As Hutch said, we´re a fairly conspicuous crowd.

I'm a fairly non-descript, average looking fellow, brown hair, 5'10", 30-yrs old, 220lbs, no beard, no glasses, no tatoos, no jewelry, no distinguishing features. I wear earth-tone clothing with no visible labels or logos. You probably won't notice me coming at you until it's too late....:D

I look just like bruce except I'm an inch taller and a year older. And you won't notice me until you're dealing with Bruce.

It's not personal. It's business. But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it.
