There seems to be a circumstantial case that Jacob Wohl is responsible for inventing both 1) the accusations against Mueller, and 2) the accusations against himself of "offering to pay" a fictional woman to make up a story. Presumably the point of 2) was that he anticipated news agencies would run with it, so that he could "expose" them by proving the woman who was the source of their story didn't exist.

Probably not, but the fish rots from the head. The Party of Trump is the party of deceit and hypocrisy, shamelessly and desperately trying to hold on to power with jaw-dropping lies and fear-mongering, with absolutely no concern for the damage caused by pouring this poison down the throat of our democracy. Trump treats trumpers like they are stupid, and so far it seems to be working. God help us.

It'll be a while, I think.

If Wohl made up his female accuser, his original intent was to entrap the media. But with the big story now being Mueller's referral, to tell from their feeds Wohl and Burkman are probably convinced they got Mueller himself to "fall for" their grand trap, so I expect they will continue to press their imaginary gotcha for a bit longer before they realize what's up.

Just when I thought your side of the argument couldn't possibly get any worse...

You are literally complaining about a prosecutor forwarding evidence of a crime to a law enforcement agency.

Who else is going to investigate it? A court will ultimately be the arbiter of a case such an investigation might bring. I bet Mueller has the sense to keep the whole thing at more than arm’s length.

Mueller is in clear violation of the "Scooby Doo"-rule: you are only allowed to contact the authorities when you not only have collected bullet-proof evidence but have also apprehended the culprits.

Piling on, the eye-popping stupidity of accusing the FBI of starting an investigation without doing research literally had me laughing out loud.

You're making this way too complicated. The reason why it appears to be a stupid plan is not because that's part of the ruse - It's just a stupid plan.

Jacob Wohl is not your average Trump twitter fan. He's significantly below average. Let me show you how I first got introduced to him.

What we have here is someone who is very bad at making his lies seem even a tiny bit believable. Everyone on the planet (with the possible exception of Slings And Arrows) realizes that this guy does not have the strange fortune of eavesdropping on pro-Trump liberals in hipster coffee shops (except for that one time it was an inner city coffee shop, because it was about the Trump-Kanye meeting).

For Wohl's real claim to fame you must instead look at his dealings in the financial industry, where due to even more very obvious lies, he received a lifetime ban from futures trading. To the best of my knowledge, he is the youngest person to receive such a dubious honor.

But let's set all that aside and assume that Jacob has been mainlining Mentats for a week straight and came up with a halfway sensible plan involving a modicum of misdirection. Why, then, would he have the scheme trace back to him in very obvious ways? Why would he make himself the one cheerleading the big story several days before it is exposed? Why would he put his own image (through an odd photoshop filter) on the Surefire Intelligence website? What about his own e-mail address? His mother's phone number? Why didn't it dawn on him that all of this is super illegal?

He's just an idiot. It's that simple.

My prediction: Within a week, he will engage in some misguided attempt to save face by admitting to at least a few of the things he has been denying, with some cartoonish positive spin, of course.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if he fled the country.

You get that the FBI is the enemy, right? For the nutbar conservatives, reporting anything to the FBI is the same as reporting it directly to Barack and Hillary.
