Ed George Soros and others targetted by Terrorist

Regarding the "bomber is crazy hence Trump bears no responsibility" [paraphrase] argument ... we as a society are concerned when an influential person uses incendiary language. We don't have to worry (much) that a mentally stable person is going to attend a Trump rally, get worked up, and then send pipe bombs in the mail. Obviously, it's the crackpots who are more likely to turn their anger into violent action.

Fer chrissake, the existence of crackpots is a key reason for responsible leaders/authorities not to encourage violence and otherwise use incendiary language. Add to that, a Trump rally is crackpot rich by definition.

Any bets that nut job gets a pardon as Trump leaves office?
Fer realz? If he were rich, maybe. But he's just a poor schlub who is easily tossed under the bus. All tRump needs is the act and not the actor. He's got the act, so what use is the actor? Hell, more like they can point to his conviction as another tall tale to tell about how they "aren't like that" and believe in law and order. Or is that "flaw and ordure"?

Its amazing how all our resident Trump apologists have gone full on "Alex Jones False Flag" over this bombing thing....

I guess I shouldn't be surprised

On Facebook Trumpites are out in force calling into question how old the stickers look on the van.:boggled:

I was literally coming here to point out that people on Twitter are doing the same thing.

We've gone from "fake bombs" to "fake stickers." The right is truly in a horrifyingly confused state.

It's like they've become a cult of personality around a narcissistic conspiracy theorist and made him president.

Trump has spent two years carefully cultivating their feeling of paranoia and conspiracy theory-mongering. Nonsense like "omg fake news bomba" is what you get.

We need to divide and conquer whilst they're still reeling.

Just a little thought experiment for those who think this has nothing to do with Trump:.
What if instead of Democrats targeted by a Trump-supporter, the packages had been sent by a far-lefty to top Republicans and Trump.

Would that person just be a nutjob?

Well, from over here, in what must now be surely regarded as the real world, the USA looks like an utterly dysfunctional society. I have no idea how you would go about repairing it, or if it is even possible.

In just two years, the Trump administration has undone most of the work (in progress to be sure) since World War 2, to create a fair and just society. They have wound race relations back to the 1960s, human rights back to the 1950's, and immigration back to the 1940s with their concentration camps near the southern border. That the Trump base is all just fine with this tells the world that racism and bigotry is alive and well in the US of A.

This will take a long, long time to repair.

Are they a nut job outside of politics?

They appear to have learned from their great leader that denial, denial, denial is the solution to everything. I don't think that can be described as confused. If any of them were interested in finding out what is actually happening, they might be confused for a brief moment, and then they'd come to their senses.
Right now, the only doubt in their minds is: How do we deny this new one?

He was also open with a former boss, who says Sayoc called himself a white supremacist. Debra Gureghian said Sayoc told her that lesbians like her and other minorities should be put on an island. And though he liked her, she would be the first person he would burn, Gureghian recalled.

Looks like he ticks all the boxes. Racism. Homophobia.

There is nothing to wonder about. All you need to know is wrapped up in this factoid:

In 2013, 75% of Evangelical Christians agreed with the statement that it is important for the President to be morally upstanding

In March of 2017, it was less than 35% who believed that.

What changed between then?

Yep, as long as it's their guy in there, they don't care about morality. That tells you everything you need to know.

They never did, it was all a sham. The entire moral majority style evangelical "movement" was and is an amoral con game.

Wray says even if the packages didn’t explode, they could have: “They did contain energetic material which if subjected to the right combination of heat or shock or friction could be dangerous to the public."...

like strapping a hand grenade on it, or shooting into the Sun.

score another one for The Big Dog!

I can explain why Wray might have made that statement.

First, he wants to make sure people understand that a device without a functional detonator does not mean that there are completely safe. Handling such devices poses a risk of harm whether they appear to have a functional detonator or not. He concludes that statement with, “…public should treat any device like that accordingly.”

Second, he wants people to understand that sending a non-functional device would not be legal. He starts his statement referring to the information in the complaint.

In terms of four the charges in the complaint, it doesn’t mater whether the devices were functional or not. The most serious of those charges is interstate transportation of explosives (18 USC 844(d)). That charges requires that there be an intent to kill, injure, or intimidate, or to damage property. Because the devices were clearly intended to at least intimidate, the question of whether they were intended to kill, injure, or damage property is irrelevant.

That charge also requires that it be an explosive. For that charge, an explosive includes “any chemical compounds…or device that contains any….ingredients, in such…quantities…that ignition by fire, by friction, by concussion, by percussion, or by detonation …may cause an explosion.” It doesn’t matter whether the device has a detonator or not. The element of the charge is sufficiently met if the chemicals can explode.

I think Wray wanted to make sure people understood that sending a non-functional device would still be against the law.

The complaint also included a charge of illegal mailing of explosives under 18 USC 1716(j)(2), which does require an intent to injure a person or damage property.

In terms of answering the question about why the devices didn’t explode, he addressed that in the middle of his comment:

we're still trying to determine whether or not they were functional, as they say. So we're doing all kinds of analysis on that to make a definitive determination.
