Of all the things that have happened in this very strange year, the incidents where administration officials and then Ted Cruz and family were run out of restaurants by mobs was the scariest. That kind of mob rule is truly un-American, and shouldn't be tolerated. The fact that a member of the House of Representatives would actually encourage such behavior is truly depressing.

The "snooty show" is exactly what will prevent it from happening. There are plenty of people, including me and Phiwum, and most of the rest of the country, that finds Travis' scenario so incredibly unthinkable that as soon as we took steps in that direction, there would be uproar.

Uproars, which I'm skeptical would happen, would not be enough. We already have concentration camps for asylum seekers and people that just looked too Hispanic to an ICE agent. Lots of people are pissed about it and yet are powerless to stop them.



Incrementally those camps will be expanded to include more and more of the population. And all the while we will get people saying "don't worry, if we really went Nazi everyone would rise up."

I don't think it's a good thing for a dour Irishman to be in charge of the final court of appeal. There needs to be somebody with knowledge of the law and right judgment and an abstract sense of justice and in touch with all classes and who understands international law and who has practical knowledge of being a criminal defense attorney, and whose integrity is not questioned.

Some of the allegations levied against Judge Kavanaugh illustrate why the presumption of innocence is so important. I am thinking in particular not of the allegations raised by Professor Ford, but of the allegation that, when he was a teenager, Judge Kavanaugh drugged multiple girls and used their weakened state to facilitate gang rape.

This outlandish allegation was put forth without any credible supporting evidence and simply parroted public statements of others. That such an allegation can find its way into the Supreme Court confirmation process is a stark reminder about why the presumption of innocence is so ingrained in our American consciousness.
