He was also from a wealthy family. I suspect extensive tutoring might have been involved. And some people are saying bribery. You know, the best people are saying it. I don't believe it myself but its what people are saying.
The Republican "clown car" primaries were not exactly an ideal measure of his ability to "recognize what the base wanted". For the first 2 months, he didn't get anywhere near 50% of the popular vote. (You don't have to be particularly good to win a primary, you just have to be better than an almost equally bad alternative.)
Plus, Trump did receive assistance from others... Bannon, Fox News, Russia. Had those not assisted him he would probably not have become the republican candidate.

Yes, he is a narcissist, amoral, etc. But, there were times when he COULD have acted intelligently (egotistically/immorally, but still intelligently) but chose not to.
