Cont: The Trump Presidency IX: Nein, Nein!

I suggest a compromise candidate for 2020: McCain, brought back to life by Hillary's coven of witches.

You live in a fantasy world - people can't be brought back from the dead!

Anyway with McCain it wouldn't need anything paranormal everyone knows he isn't dead, that's just a ruse so he can continue to attack Trump from his position in the Deep State and can't now be arrested for his involvement in the democrats pedalo-ring

New thread for guesses as to who the WH deep state/throat is?

Pence is showing up on the radar because of the 'lodestone' reference.
Kelly, most likely because people believe he's just barely holding in his contempt for trump.
Ivanka is probably the longest shot you could take, but it's on the list per this thread. I'd say Jared's a more likely candidate than she is.
Mattis, I think, has also been mentioned for his affinity to 'first principles'.
I'd sooner pick Nikki Haley as my guess, given the foreign policy references in the op-ed.

CNN describes it as "watching the opening act of a stunning attempt to topple the elected leader of the nation."

Perhaps demanding blind loyalty doesn't work so well.

America, electing Trump did make for an entertaining circus but this story has leapt to incredible levels with the anonymous White House writer. What a gripping story but it must surely be winding up now? Will he bought down by his sheer Dunning-Kruger unaware incompetence and not the Mueller investigation? What will tomorrow bring?

Whomever these "adults in the room" are, they're a bunch of cowards for not rallying together as a group and telling the truth to the american peoples' faces of what's really going on behind this despot's iron curtain.

By quietly stomping out the fires covering up for Trump's inadequacies and childish tyranny, they're also covering up for the GOP and saving GOP face, as well as protecting their own individual political careers.

That's not putting country first. That's putting party and self first.

Worried about a possible "constitutional crisis" ? Sounds like nothing but a copout based on hyperbolic supposition.

Cowards.

It really is a circus, and the US will take some time to recover, if it ever does, after the clown in the ringleader's costume is gone.
trump has elevated the status of stupidity, dishonesty, cruelty, racism and incivility in the States.

That’s the part that makes me a guilty enthusiastic spectator to all this but this is a historic event in American politics unfolding right now.

Geçmiş olsun (may it pass), America.

...really?

It looks like it - from the published donations of the Trump Foundation in 1989, it donated $7 to the Boy Scouts. Journalists have tried to find out what it was for - the Boy Scouts didn't know, and none of the cookie packs cost that little.
The only $7 item available that year was a membership - and Donald Jr. (not Barron) became a Boy Scout that year.

Thanks for the correction. I knew it was his son, but forgot the details of which one.

The New York Times have said that they had the piece before the excerpts from Woodward's book were published.
Which still doesn't rule out some manipulation of the timeline. That piece actually could have been written weeks ago. I noticed the White House was putting out very mixed signals re: stopping Russian meddling. Trump just barely said it was possible while "senior officials" were adamant that it was ongoing and malicious, much worse than Trump could admit.

Trump is a lot of things but that is just ********.
I agree. Everyone once in a while I cut Trump a tiny bit of slack. Though he ultimately was responsible for the border separations I think that bit of theater was worked out by Sessions/Stephen Miller and that Trump backed down fairly quickly. I have to admit, part of me wanted the **************** to continue because it was eroding support even from Trump's base. But the ongoing and cumulative human costs were so ghastly that I'm glad someone - Ivanka or Melania? - influenced him to back down.

Hm, auto censor turned the whose phrase into asterisks. "Fiasco" or débâcle would have worked as well.

His response to the Anonymous Op Ed was to say that he had great poll numbers.

And poor old RealClearPolitics. They spent months keeping the margin (approve vs disapprove) anywhere below -10 (minus ten). Of course they had Rasmussen's "Oh, I dunno Tom what do you want to claim it is? Plus 3?" Poll.

But they were keeping good weeks "live" for ten to fifteen extra days, then deleting three weeks only when a couple of good polls came up,... All to keep the plus/minus looking semi-respectable. Now, even Rasmussen is trying to gain some street cred "Hey we weren't that far off in the end!" and has DJT in deep minus territory with the average now over -12(minus 12). They're closer to the fivethirtyeight number but still cherry pick their polls to get better results. It's a shame RCP Average is a standard. They're drawing a lot of traffic and I'd imagine get a lot of readers to their deplorable-written trash journalism.

I mentioned to another poster in passing. If you want to know where the deplorables are, click on any RCP-written (not feeds) article and read the comments. I'm tempted to join just to troll them.

Melania? She didn't care did u?

(Has to be one of the most bizarre actions I've ever seen from a public figure. Worn on her trip to the detention camp. If she wore it to send a message she's a real biyatch. If she did it without being aware of the effect, she's brain dead. I tend to think it was the former -- she's a biyatch on wheels -- because, despite the furor, she never offered any public explanation or even acknowledged the outcry.)

Has anyone suggested Kellyanne? She's not so much a foreign policy wonk but I believe her hubby is a "never Trumper."

That piece was very carefully worded, walking a fine line between alarming the public and reassuring them, while still kissing GOP ass. It sounds like language hammered out by a group effort determined to stay cogent and on point. And, didn't the NYT seem to favor neutral pronouns?

Polygraphs for the lot of them?

It's possible ;) ! But McCain's brilliant show of pageantry obviates the need for him to fake his death - there's a possible surrogate/soulmate in Jeff Flake, who though he's not seeking re-election could possibly be the longer-term replacement for the appointed role now being filled in the interim by Jon Kyl, Arizona's former junior senator. I kind of think Flake wants to run for president eventually.

I would imagine Kyl (and Flake) will be solid votes to confirm Brett Kavanaugh, just as McCain probably would have been. Though McCain replaced Goldwater he's not that much of a maverick. Goldwater became pro-choice in later years and disliked the religious right intensely.

I have got to quit losing sleep over this. Not working right now, just spending too much time on this forum. If I stay up late enough I can talk to the UK crowd when the Americans have gone to bed. Also some of you in Europe, Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. If I stay up really late I get the East Coast early risers and even a few of you out west. It's not good for me, but I'm pretty much obsessed by the drama.

She's a hard one to read, all Botox Eastern European cheekbones, but I'm not sure that message was meant to refer to the border mess. Someone suggested maybe she was trolling Trump over Stormy Daniels. But you're right, it's hard to understand what she was thinking.

She would not have been wearing a coat in June in Brownsville, Texas for very long. And she did go to the border - twice.

Pay me no mind, I am just way too immersed in reading the tea leaves.

Mixed feelings. I'd love to see Trump supporters/voters get complacent and overestimate Trump's popularity. But I'd also love to see a 5 percent slippage on approval, because 40 percent is too damn much.

I'm not a poll wonk, but I've watched your takes with interest as well as the gentleman from Argentina's.
