The truck had two flags in the rear stake holes, one a confederate flag and the other an American flag.

Because of course it had.

It's amazing how many people will scream about AMERICA! and patriotism while flaunting the flag of a nation that betrayed America.

Or, more likely, they think the Confederacy represented the REAL America.

It's hard to imagine Trump's army of supporters ever buying a product with Colin Kaepernick's face on the box. And many of them, until now, have been loyal customers. History has shown that politicizing a product usually suppresses market share.

Don't worry in 50 years everyone will be talking about how he Transcended race and all that like they did with Muhammad Ali.

There is this silly reverence that some American's have for the flag and anthem. I treat the presentation of the colors respectfully, but this has turned into a bizarre fetish, not a principled action. I'm personally embarrassed by how ignorant most Americans are of the Constitution, the Declaration and the really great things about our government.

Yeah, it's a source of frequent amusement for us north of the border.

I have relatives who live in Burnaby and Coquitlam near Vancouver BC and I always use to tease them about them about joining the Union. Now I wonder if the Northern and Western States shouldn't join Canada.

At this point I'm half-wondering if splitting the Union in two (or three, if you can't have two contiguous parts) wouldn't be for the best. The single most dividing issue in the US has been there since before the Constitution was ever written and it doesn't seem like it's going away.

And this was OREGON, not Alabama. It was such a stereotype of racist redneck gun toting backwards, ignorant Trump voters that I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

You would think I was making it up.

The problem with that is the idea that there is some sort of North/South or Red State/Blue state divide in America is B.S.

The divide is Rural/Urban and we can't really redistrict that without going full on Hunger Games.

I'm not that pessimistic...but who knows, maybe I'm just stupid. Overall, progress has been made. But it's not in a straight line. We seem to take 2 steps forward and then 1 back.

We will see. I grew up in Oklahoma, and my FB feed is blowing up about this from friends and family that live there. I keep seeing the poster where they replace Kap with Pat Tillman, so they all buy into the "they are disrespecting the military" angle.

The quandary for them is that Nike sponsors OU Football, so every cap and jersey has the swoosh. Same with Baker Mayfield and the Browns. Somehow I doubt they are burning those up.

Trump has commented on Nike

"Just like the NFL, whose ratings have gone WAY DOWN, Nike is getting absolutely killed with anger and boycotts. I wonder if they had any idea that it would be this way? As far as the NFL is concerned, I just find it hard to watch, and always will, until they stand for the FLAG!"

More likely in my opinion the confederate flag represents something different to them than it does to you.

Oh let's have this conversation again.

What's the excuse / total logical disconnect going to be this time? "State's Rights?"

You might be right, but from up here it sure seems like that central and southern part of America's completely out of touch with reality.

And before anyone says anything: 62%+ of Americans live in cities, so it's not like rural Americans represent the "average" or "real" America.

Please don't play that game with me. There's no possible answer to "what does this flag mean to you?" that doesn't lead right back to slavery and to the terrible conflict that it led to.

If you think otherwise, try me.

"What? To me, 1488 is simply a very important year, it's when Bartolomeu Dias landed in Mossal Bay*. My Swastika? No, that's just a symbol I got from Wolfenstein, I love that series. You're the Real Racist!"

*: Of course I had to look this one up.

What if they're just really big fans of the Dukes of Hazard?

State's rights. Which of course leads back to the causes of the civil war, which leads to slavery.
