The Trump/Putin summit predictions thread

"Unbelievable" is often meant as praise - inflection matters. "The Incredible Journey," one of my favorite children's books, does not mean you should not believe the story - it means it was an astonishing journey.

Brandy praised a young singer's performance on "America's Got Talent": "That was un-believ-able."

Besides, I kind of doubt that Trump has a good grip on Latin prefixes.

Not to mention:
Trump calls Macron's win in France an "incredible victory."

Trump says Queen Elizabeth II is "an incredible woman."

To the Houston Astros on winning the World Series- "To Jim Crane, General Manager Jeff Luhnow, President Reid Ryan, skipper A.J. Hinch… and all of the players and staff, congratulations on your incredible victory."

Because of Coats? Or because Trump is keeping U.S. intelligence in the dark about what secret agreements he made with Putin?

He can tell Putin anything he wants to, but if at the same time he is freezing out the U.S. intelligence community, that seems borderline treasonous.

Trump probably has no idea what he agreed to; therefor has no ability to reliably brief Coats, Pompeo, Mattis et al. I would be livid if I were them.

Is that rhetorical?

Because Russians.

It hardly matters : once you've got a one-on-one meeting with no witnesses you can make any claims you like. That's why diplomats abhor them. I've no doubt it was Putin's idea and he easily got Trump to think it was his.
It's totally in Russian interests to have a recording, but whether they could do so is hard to know.

Seems like we aren't freaking out enough over Trump not immediately saying "no" to abducting our former ambassadors.

Don't know, in that same interview with Andrea Mitchell he claimed Trump is very interested and attentive in intelligence briefings, asks pertinent questions, the briefings run overtime, and Coats claimed other POTUSes are often less interested, only want the top 3 points or whatever (I'm guessing that was GW).

Coates seemed to be laying it on thick, I'm sure that pleased Dear Leader.

If anybody could, my money would be on them. Putin would order one made instinctively. The CIA probably have one as well, but can hardly admit spying on their own President. How Deep State would that look?

You forget all those Trump attempts to establish a 'back channel' with Putin.

Let's get real here. Trump colluded, there's probably more quid pro quos to come and some that weren't fulfilled yet due to Congressional interference. No doubt Trump asked for more interference in the 2018 election if Putin wants Trump to block sanctions, etc.

Nothing else makes sense being secret if not related to election interference, money laundering and what deals Trump can offer Putin.

Perhaps Coats keeps Trump engaged by building trivial events into thrilling tales of derring-do, and skipping over the boring stuff.

The Wall Street Journal said Pompeo and other U.S. officials were in the room with Putin and Trump for a second two-hour meeting. It was the first time I'd heard that. Somehow I did not get hit with the paywall that I usually do with the WSJ.

ETA: And Mattis was supposed to be talking to Trump today. Or rather Trump talking to Mattis, since he knows more than the generals.

Coats learned from a tweet Putin was coming to the White House and he was incredulous. He said something about assessing the security risks of Putin's visit. I'm almost certain he means the security risks posed by Trump himself and his big fat mouth.

Actually, when I look at those I mostly find Russian attempts to establish a back-channel through which they intended to influence Trump.

I think you give Trump too much credit (I don't suppose you hear that very often). I don't think he went into the meeting with any idea of what he was going to talk about, let alone ask for. Putin, in contrast, will have known exactly how to proceed. Stroke Trump ("He says I'm doing a great job in North Korea"), get him ranting about the media and the witch hunt and such deliberate souring of the relationship, from that to some "This is how it should be, two strong leaders face to face, both guys, sorting things out".

Moving on to Browder and McFaul, be sure to flag Browder as the guy who gave $400m to Clinton and McFaul as Obama-era, and mention Geore Soros why not. And so on : press the buttons, collect the prize.

Do y'all think Putin recorded the summit discussions? Why our why not?

Yes, at least the audio. Putin or his translator could have also had a button cam. It's difficult to imagine the Finns didn't get both video and audio. Why wouldn't they?

I don't see any way he could compel them to speak to Russian investigators.

Maybe Putin was plumbing the depths of Trump's ignorance.

Putin may not actually understand the limits of presidential power. Certainly the concept that Trump could order the former ambassador to go to Russia and the former ambassador could tell Trump to go sit in the corner and play hide and go **** yourself is alien to Putin.
